Motorola, Nokia, Palm, RIM Suffering iPhone Headache [view article]
I think saying the iPhone is taking business away from these other phone makers is a bit much. The iPhone is never going to unseat Blackberry as the goto business road warrior phone. The iPhone is also never going to be free and reach the kind of mass market Nokia and Motorola phones will. It's a nice toy that some people want and can afford but implying these companies are tembling because of this is absurd. ReplySeven Tech Stocks For Long-Term Hold [view article]
Regarding Akamai, the fact that it is currently handling such a large volume has allowed it to negotiate very favorably with those from whom it buys bandwidth. This is a very big competitive advantage. ReplySeven Tech Stocks For Long-Term Hold [view article]

Research In Motion's Pullback is an Opportunity [view article]
I talked to a top 10 holder after RIMM missed: he still liked the name, but I couldn't tell if he was holding onto it all or trimming...meat of the convo suggested he thinks earnings normalize after this ad spend and RIMM protects its share...well, ya, but even if EPS remains intact, there is no certainty how much the Street will pay for them...
PEs are driven by growth rates and discount rates: sadly, in RIMMS case, risk could be going up while growth is going south...100 is the next stop, if AAPL sell thru is robust, 80 here we come.... Reply

Not surprising. I agree with the article. However, it also goes the other way: iPhone customers who are looking at other devices, are often looking at BlackBerry as the first device when they find they want a tactile keyboard.
BlackBerry and iPhone customers are often a satisfied lot. However, dissatisfied BlackBerry customers are often looking at iPhone, and dissatisfied iPhone customers are often looking at BlackBerry.
We know many people here who switched from iPhone to BlackBerry, because they wanted a tactile keyboard as well as other features only BlackBerry offers.
Although iPod is still superior for browsing, RIM is coming out with both guns blazing. BlackBerry has a knockoff iPod-style music player available now (with albums flipping as you scroll trackball), and some web browsers for BlackBerry now has zooming capability, including Opera Mini and the OS 4.5 BlackBerry Browsers. Their upcoming touchscreen BlackBerry is a multi-touch screen (at first for Verizon and Bell Mobility no less; the networks that can't get the iPhone). Reply

iPhone Can Replace Laptops for Majority of Computer Users [view article]
Perhaps the iPhone or iPod touch won't replace one's laptop, but it sure complements it.By the way, not only does the iPhone have a % sign, but also £, ¥, € and more!

Apple Ups The Ante With 3G iPhone - But RIM's Almost Ready to Counter [view article]
RIM's counterattack appears to be delayed while iPhone 3G sells like crazy around the world, overwhelming computer systems.RIM down about 4.5% while market (and Apple) down about 1.5%. Reply
Apple Ups The Ante With 3G iPhone - But RIM's Almost Ready to Counter [view article]
Once again, with feeling; iPhone is NOT just a "smartphone" - it is the first mass-market mobile, hand-held computer - which also can be used as a phone...But most of the people who write these things don't seem to get that - which is why Apple always leaves them (like the "competition"... in the dust.
mollytjm, PK D'Cville, and some of the rest are quite right on all counts. Apple is and always has been an innovator of the best products and OS - and now the rest of the world is catching on. Reply
Apple Ups The Ante With 3G iPhone - But RIM's Almost Ready to Counter [view article]
It's a little early to call it game over for RIM guys. Yes, Apple has the best mobile platform out there, but this does not automatically translate into death for all other platforms. Using that logic, Windows would be dead already as there is no question Apple makes a much better OS. Yet over the last many years they were only able to keep a small market share. The broader point is that while Apple has one relatively pricey phone with a large screen and wants to innovate on the software side going forward, RIM is quietly positioning the company for mass markets by offering lower priced models like the new clam shell (rumored to be sold for $50) and the curve update called Javelin (the EDGE radio will help keep costs very low so they can sell it cheaply). Even today you can find free Pearls and Curves with contracts. The real thing to watch here is how much mkt share RIM takes from moto, samsung, LG, nokia at the lower end as they work with carriers to offer more flexible data pricing. Well, I gotta go and buy my new iPod Touch! (Don't forget how many people will opt to buy the Touch and still be on the platform). "What I'm somewhat least glad to, is noticing that you've made a good 70 posts around here, the vast majority of them on the topic of how great RIMM is, with just a few unrelated thrown in to, I suppose, add smoke and mirrors ?A magnificent collection of falsehoods and half-thruths, trying unconvincingly to hitch RIM's oxcart to Apple's hoovercraft. This doesn't surprise on the side of RIMM, which if I recall got caught in 2002 in a payola for analyst buy ratings scheme."
Are you completely stupid? Look at the dates on those posts and you'll see I have been at it for a while now talking about why RIM really has a true advantage in the mobile space. Since I started posting, the stock has performed amazingly, so if one had heeded my FREE advice (if you even call my posts that), they would have made a lot of money. Let me repeat myself, I do this because I believe what RIM is doing will create significant value. I do not get paid in any way for my opinions. Why would you believe I did? The fact that I have been consistently correct I guess doesn't matter either. In fact, since my RIMM posts started, I have actually made a lot more money in it compared to AAPL, which I have actually owned longer.
As far as the "other" posts designed to "add smoke and mirrors", how does following other stocks have anything to do with RIMM. That doesn't make any sense. How can you believe this is some conspiracy when I am just responding to other posts.
You obviously have some major issues you need to work out. I'm sure there are some great psychiatric institutions near wherever you live. You may want to seek professional help with your conspiracy theories. In the meantime, please use birth control. Ok, I'm done with this. Enough responding to minutia. Reply

saying that RIMM will have it's own comparable phone is like saying that microsoft will have a great OS, eventually... the point here is that Apple is the top innovator... it's first, but it doesn't rest... it keeps innovating and STAYS first. other companies are trying to play catch up on everything Apple does...computers, mp3 players, and now smartphones (which are really getting mighty close to being shirt pocket computers). Though there's room for other players, I'll bet on Apple in this high stakes game. they have huge cash reserves, no debt, great retail space profits, great tech support and innovative profits. no, i don't work for Apple. I'm a retired stamp dealer. ReplyApple Ups The Ante With 3G iPhone - But RIM's Almost Ready to Counter [view article]
