- Thursday, May 30, 9:16 AM Ruckus (RKUS) +4.3% on an upgrade to Buy from Needham 's Richard Valera, who strongly defends the company in the face of its ~50% spring decline. While granting a recent lockup expiration could pressure shares, Valera sees Ruckus' "competitive differentiation as intact, its enterprise business as unaffected by the bundling tactics of Cisco in the high-end enterprise market, and ... its opportunity in the high-growth service provider Wi-Fi market as undiminished." Lazard cut shares to Neutral earlier this month in response to Ruckus' Q1 miss and light Q2 guidance. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, May 17, 10:25 AM While Aruba crashes thanks to soft July quarter guidance and worries about Cisco's efforts to bundle Wi-Fi hardware in enterprise deals, carrier Wi-Fi rival Ruckus (RKUS +2.6%) is adding to yesterday's Cisco-fueled gains thanks to an upgrade to Buy from Goldman's Simona Jankowski. She notes shares closed yesterday down 41% YTD and 11% from their $15 IPO price thanks to Ruckus' Q1 miss and Q2 guidance, and argues Ruckus' long-term story is intact. Deals with tier-1 carriers such as AT&T and Vodafone are expected, and Ruckus is seen as a "key beneficiary" of efforts to integrate small cell base stations with Wi-Fi access points. Comment! [On the Move] - Thursday, May 16, 10:49 AM Plenty of Cisco rivals and suppliers are now rallying in response to the company's FQ3 beat, guidance, and order activity: JDSU +5.2%. RKUS +5.8%. CAVM +4.8%. PKT +2.9%. ADTN +2.6%. ALLT +1.9%. FN +2%. FNSR +2.4%. BRCM +1.3%. MRVL +1.6%. (previous) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 7, 7:02 PM Though Ruckus (RKUS -26.2%) claims its Q1 miss and soft guidance aren't tied to competition, "it is difficult to reconcile the implied disparity between Ruckus’ growth and that of the overall [carrier] Wi-Fi market," says Lazard, discussing its downgrade to Neutral. However, other companies, such as F5 and Fortinet, have also reported soft carrier demand for discretionary projects. Meanwhile, Raymond James thinks Ruckus and Aruba's (ARUN -22.8% - previous) warnings, along with Motorola Solutions' (MSI) guidance, suggests enterprise Wi-Fi growth is slowing. Market leader Cisco (CSCO -2%), whose Wi-Fi unit posted 27% Y/Y growth last quarter, reports on May 15. 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

[On the Move] - Tuesday, May 7, 9:33 AM Aruba Networks (ARUN -19.6%) dives after warning it expects FQ3 (April quarter) revenue of $144M-$147M and EPS of $0.11-$0.12, well below a consensus of $160.5M and $0.20. The enterprise/carrier Wi-Fi hardware maker says it "saw a push out in customer orders across the Americas, Europe and Asia," something it mostly blames on macro. The warning comes as rival Ruckus (RKUS -21.1%) gets crushed due to a Q1 miss and light Q2 guidance, and is hit with a downgrade to Neutral from Lazard. Aruba depends more on enterprise sales than Ruckus; both face strong competition from Cisco (CSCO -1.1%), which seems to be lower in sympathy. 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

[On the Move] - Monday, May 6, 4:33 PM Ruckus (RKUS) blames its Q1 miss on "delayed deployments by several service provider customers in the Americas, as well as challenging market conditions in China;" company insists competition isn't a factor. Q2 guidance is for revenue of $61M-$64M and EPS of $0.03-$0.04, largely below a consensus of $67.1M and $0.04. Gross margin rose 170 bps Q/Q and 390 bps Y/Y to 67.9%, a big reason the EPS miss wasn't as bad as the revenue miss. Opex +62% Y/Y, well above rev. growth of 27%. RKUS -17.9% AH. ARUN -2.8% in sympathy. CC at 5PM ET (webcast). (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, May 6, 4:10 PM Ruckus Wireless (RKUS): Q1 EPS of $0.03 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $57.2M (+27% Y/Y) misses by $6.07M. Shares -18.5% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 10, 11:04 AM Adtran's (ADTN +13%) Q1 beat is contributing to strong gains in telecom equipment, chip, and component stocks, as investors take it as another sign of improving telecom capex going into earnings season. Adtran's remarks about strong demand from both U..S. and international carriers can't be hurting. CSCO +2.5%. CIEN +6.4%. JDSU +4.6%. ALU +4.6%. FN +4.8%. FNSR +6%. PKT +4.2%. RKUS +4.2%. JNPR +3.9%. CAVM +3%. INFN +2.9%. OCLR +4%. SONS +2.5%. 2013 has seen a string of rallies (I, II, III) tied to capex hopes. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, April 5, 9:51 AM The bloodletting in enterprise IT and telecom equipment names that followed F5's March quarter warning yesterday afternoon has spread, with some telecom component/chip names now among the companies getting hit hard. This morning's weak NFP report certainly isn't helping matters. JDSU -5%. CVLT -6.1%. EZCH -4.5%. INFA -3.9%. QLIK -3.9%. MLNX -3.6%. CAVM -8.5%. RKUS -5%. FTNT -3.9%. FNSR -6%. Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, February 22, 10:24 AM Ruckus (RKUS +11.3%) soars after GigaOm reports pan-African carrier Airtel plans to use Ruckus' access points to build a Wi-Fi network that could eventually have over 100K nodes. Airtel also reportedly plans to tap Alcatel-Lucent (ALU -1.4%) to provide aggregation routers and integration services. Ruckus might also be getting a lift from rival Aruba's (ARUN +19.9%) FQ2 beat. On its earnings call, Aruba, which is stronger in enterprise Wi-Fi, said it wants to deliver carrier Wi-Fi architectures that support both standard Wi-Fi offload and managed services for enterprises. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 1:04 PM Ruckus Wireless (RKUS -11.1%) is falling hard again; shares are down 20% since the company delivered a Q4 beat and in-line Q1 guidance on Tuesday. On its earnings call, Ruckus did note it expects its 2013 profits to be affected some by sales/R&D investments, but struck an upbeat tone about demand. Rival Cisco bragged on its call service provider Wi-Fi hardware sales more than doubled Y/Y. Needham downgraded Ruckus to Hold on Wednesday, citing a high valuation (7x 2014E EV/sales). Comment!
