- Thursday, May 9, 10:14 AM Rambus (RMBS -2.5%) initially trades higher, then sells off after the judge presiding over its infringement suit against SK Hynix fines the company $250M for destroying documents, while affirming past rulings declaring Hynix guilty of infringement. The $250M will be applied as a credit to a $349M + interest award assigned to Rambus following an '06 verdict, and a royalty rate of 0.8%-0.85% will be applied to infringing SK Hynix chips. (previous: I, II) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, April 26, 2:37 PM Rambus (RMBS +3.6%) continues a strong week after hosting its annual meeting yesterday afternoon (transcript), and filing its Q1 10-Q this morning. During the meeting, CEO Ronald Black promised litigation expenses will continue to drop, and touted the potential of Rambus' LED bulb design (said to require fewer LEDs and offer superior reliability), and mentioned the company has a solar cell prototype that leverages its LED tech. Shares fell last week in response to Rambus' Q1 miss and light Q2 guidance. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

OSH -9%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Friday, April 19, 1:02 PM Rambus (RMBS -10.4%) gives back a large chunk of its April gains after missing Q1 estimates and guiding on its earnings call for Q2 revenue of $53M-$58M, below the $61M forecast by the one analyst providing estimates. Customer license income is expected to fall to $56M-$61M from Q1's $72.1M. The guidance is blamed on seasonality and a lack of one-time payments recognized in Q1. A 6% Q/Q increase in operating costs/expenses pressured Q1 results; they nonetheless fell 19% Y/Y, thanks to lower R&D, legal, and M&A-related expenses. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 4:07 PM Rambus (RMBS): Q1 EPS of -$0.09 misses by $0.05. Revenue of $66.9M misses by $0.1M. Shares +0.6% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]

- Friday, April 5, 2:11 PM Google, BlackBerry, Red Hat, and Earthlink submit a paper (.pdf) to the FTC and DOJ calling for actions against perceived patent trolls, arguing such firms cost U.S. companies $80B in 2011 after factoring both direct and indirect costs. To back up their stance, the companies claim suits from "patent assertion entities" have risen 4x since '05, and now account for 62% of all IP suits. The paper arrives 6 weeks after Pres. Obama criticized patent trolls, and amidst expectations of Congressional action. Companies that could be affected: RMBS, IDCC, VHC, ACTG, WILN. 11 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, March 11, 5:23 PM Rambus (RMBS) announces a huge board shakeup. Chairman J. Thomas Bentley is resigning from the position, but will remain a board member. Michael Farmwald "will transition from active board member to the position of emeritus advisor to the Board." 1 Comment [Tech]

[On the Move] - Tuesday, February 19, 5:29 PM Rambus (RMBS) +3.8% AH after: 1) Announcing a settlement and patent licensing deal with LSI, one of the chipmakers it had filed an ITC complaint against. The licensing deal lasts through 2018. 2) Raising its Q1 revenue guidance range to $65M-$69M from a prior $58M-$63M, thanks to a one-time payment related to the LSI deal. The consensus is at $61M. Shares rose 6.4% in regular trading. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 12:09 PM Pres. Obama isn't a fan of patent trolls. "They are essentially trying to leverage and hijack somebody else's idea and see if they can extort some money," Obama stated during a Google+ hangout. He added, "Our efforts at patent reform are only about halfway to where we need to go." The remarks come as the DOJ and FTC hold hearings on patent trolls, and an appeals court debates whether software should be patentable. Some IP holders accused of being patent trolls: ACTG, VRNG, RMBS, VHC, IDCC, WILN. 45 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, February 4, 5:39 PM Rambus (RMBS) general counsel Thomas Lavelle has left to "pursue other opportunities." Corporate counsel Jae Kim will replace him. - Friday, January 25, 11:31 AM Rambus (RMBS +9.8%) has shot higher in the wake of its Q4 report. Management continues to talk up the potential of Rambus' LED tech. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
