It&rsquo;s one thing to have a second-tier wannabe Street Nabob beating on Fortress Investment Group&rsquo;s (FIG) stock, but now its RailAmerica (RRA) subsidiary&nbsp;has abandoned, under pressure,&nbsp;an attempt to extort $23 million, plus ongoing surcharges and subsidies, from the state of Oregon and various related enterprises to restore service on the Coos Bay section of its Central Oregon &amp; Pacific Railroad.</p>  <p>The line closed suddenly in September 2007, allegedly because of deteriorating tunnels, leaving the Coos Bay port, in southwest Oregon,&nbsp;and its mostly timber shippers without rail service. Much sharp-curve steel-on-steal squealing ensued, growing only louder as RailAmerica came up with the brilliant wheeze of having anybody else pay for repairs. It then agreed to sell the line, at a so far undisclosed price, on condition that&nbsp;it kept control over a vital section.</p>]]>

      <title>Railroad Stocks Right on Track</title>

        <![CDATA[The railroad industry is an area that has been overlooked by many investors, maybe because they consider it "too 19th century."<!--more--> 

<p>However, this group may have several investment opportunities as most of the railroads pay dividends and many have relatively low P/E ratios. So how do you analyze a railroad, besides looking at the usual statistics? First, you have to look at the items they transport. Is there a strong demand for the commodities that they haul? Is that demand expected to get stronger in the future? 
</p>
<p>In addition, you have to look at the cost of fuel for their locomotives, and their ability to pass on that cost to their customers. <strong>Here is a list of the major rails</strong>, most of which are traded on the New York Stock Exchange:

      <title>Lots of Value Riding the Railroad </title>

(CNI) may be most worthy of consideration, with Canadian Pacific Railway Company (CP) and Norfolk Southern Corp. (NSC) close behind and of particular interest to value aficionados.
</p>
<p>With railroads so heavily tied to fixed capital, this hardly seems like an industry that would have much appeal to modern investors. Even relative to other cyclical companies, it might seem hard for rail firms to generate much growth. After all, we can't expect carriers to build new routes as easily as the typical manufacturer might build a new factory.
