Thursday, April 4, 4:47 PM Rosetta Stone (RST) says it's closing all of its iconic yellow kiosk locations and cutting 245 part and full-time employees as it converts to strictly an online operation. The language-learning company made its mark selling language courses through CDs offered in kiosks in malls and airports throughout the world. Thursday, November 8, 2012, 10:31 AM Rosetta Stone (RST +19.1%) is doing the exact opposite of what it did 3 months ago, taking off after beating Q3 estimates and raising its 2012 adjusted EBITDA guidance to $8M-$10M from a prior $6M-$8M. International consumer and institutional sales respectively fell 8% and 6% Y/Y in Q3, but U.S. consumer rose 5%, and bookings growth of 9% exceeded flat revenue growth. Rosetta noted on its earnings call that its direct-to-consumer sales efforts in the U.S. are lifting bookings. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]

Total revenue decreased 9%, largely due to the rationalization of less efficient kiosks, lower sales internationally and a decline in the Institutional business because of the non-renewal of the Army and Marines contracts last year. However, the company notes international consumer sales fell 33% Y/Y to $8.1M, worse than Q1's 14% drop, and U.S. consumer swung from a 52% Q1 increase to a 4% decline. Institutional sales fell 2%, nearly even with Q1. Rosetta is expanding its 2012 adjusted EBITDA guidance range to the downside, but is leaving its revenue guidance unchanged.
