- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 4:25 PM Why was T-Mobile USA finally able to reach an iPhone deal? Because it's ending phone subsidies next year. In a radical move, the struggling low-end carrier says all phones it sells will soon have to be paid for in full, up-front or via installments. With the iPhone 5 (AAPL) selling for $649-$849 unsubsidized, its sales stand to be disproportionately affected. T-Mobile's move will hurt business with customers who demand high-end hardware for $200 or less, but will also allow it to shift entirely to its cheap Value Plans. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 12:12 PM It looks like T-Mobile USA is finally getting the iPhone: Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY.PK) says its U.S. unit "has entered into an agreement with Apple (AAPL +2.1%) to bring products to market together in 2013." It doesn't provide further details, other than to say the deal will hurt DT's 2013 free cash flow (likely thanks to big purchase requirements/subsidies). Many were expecting an announcement this week. MetroPCS (PCS +1.7%), slated to merge with T-Mobile USA, is up a bit. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 9:21 AM MetroPCS (PCS) -7.2% after 3 sources tell Reuters Sprint (S) is unlikely to make an offer for the discount carrier in the near-term, out of concern it would complicate the regulatory review of the SoftBank (SFTBF.PK) deal. Sprint could revisit a MetroPCS bid after the SoftBank deal closes, but with the T-Mobile/MetroPCS deal expected to close somewhere in 1H13, and Sprint and SoftBank shooting for a mid-2013 close, Sprint might not have much time. LEAP -1.6%. (previous) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday, November 30, 2012, 1:00 PM MetroPCS (PCS +3%), Leap Wireless (LEAP +4.3%), and Clearwire (CLWR +8.1%) are higher after a Guggenheim Securities analyst writes Sprint (S -0.6%) could make a $12-$13/share bid for MetroPCS in the next 4 weeks. Speculation debt-laden Sprint will try to grab MetroPCS from T-Mobile has been around for a while, aided by the fact SoftBank's (SFTBF.PK) CEO has said he won't rule out an offer. Also: Chat on the Street has passed on a (somewhat questionable) rumor Carlos Slim is talking with Clearwire. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday, November 30, 2012, 9:56 AM Regional mobile carrier NTELOS (NTLS -21.8%) has crashed after FBR says it believes Sprint (S) will end its wholesale deal, with an announcement set for FY13 (ends in March). FBR, which is downgrading shares to Underperform and lowering its PT to $5 from $15, notes the Sprint deal accounted for 32.4% of NTELOS' 2011 wireless revenue, and 57.4% of its adjusted EBITDA. 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 2:36 PM For yet another year, a Consumer Reports survey of U.S. mobile users has rated AT&T (T) the worst major U.S. carrier. Verizon Wireless (VZ) was again given top marks, and was followed by Sprint (S) and T-Mobile. An August J.D. Power study yielded similar rankings. Consumer Reports did, however, give AT&T the highest satisfaction score among 4G users, even though its LTE network coverage trails Verizon's. (last year) 7 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 21, 2012, 11:23 AM FCC chairman Julius Genachowski says he backs Dish Network's (DISH) bid to create a nationwide 4G network using its spectrum - an FCC vote is expected by year's end. But (in-line with a recent report) he recommends limiting the network's power output to address interference concerns. That's not sitting well with Dish, which argues the restrictions would significantly reduce the amount of uplink spectrum it can use. Sprint (S), which owns adjacent spectrum, backs the FCC's proposal. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 2:23 PM The U.S. mobile industry might not be done consolidating: T-Mobile USA (DTEGY.PK) is open to making new deals one it finishes merging with MetroPCS (PCS), says CTO Neville Ray. SoftBank (SFTBF.PK), on the verge of taking a controlling interest in Sprint (S), has also suggested it's willing to make additional moves. Leap Wireless (LEAP) is a name that inevitably comes up whenever U.S. mobile consolidation is a subject. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 11:11 PM Google (GOOG) has held talks with Dish Network (DISH) about building a massive 4G network using Dish's spectrum, the WSJ reports, while cautioning the talks "aren't advanced and could amount to nothing." Such a tie-up would be costly for Google and risk hurting carrier support for Android, but there would also be benefits. Google "wants people to watch 10 hours of YouTube a day ... what hurts them is [wireless carriers] restricting capacity," observes BTIG's Walter Piecyk. Sprint (S) and Clearwire (CLWR) have been named in the past as potential Dish partners (I, II). 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 5:49 PM U.S. carriers are doing what they can to try to give Windows Phone (MSFT) a mass following. Verizon Wireless (VZ) says it will offer a Windows Phone model for free with contract by year's end, but doesn't say from whom. Big Red currently offers HTC's high-end 8X for $199, and Nokia's (NOK) mid-range Lumia 822 for $99. Sprint (S), meanwhile, promises to introduce WP models next year. 10 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 1:18 PM AT&T (T) is doing its best to poach Sprint (S) subscribers still using its legacy Nextel network, ahead of the network's planned June '13 shutdown. Ma Bell introduced new "rugged" phones today, aimed at the kind of professional workers that make up much of Nextel's subscriber base, and is offering a $5/month push-to-talk to go with them. Sprint's recapture rate for departing Nextel subs stood at 59% in Q3. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, November 9, 2012, 1:02 PM Leap Wireless (LEAP +6%) is rallying for the second day in a row thanks to new speculation a spectrum deal or full-blown sale will happen. Sprint's (S) cancellation of a conference presentation, together with Leap's Wednesday earnings call remarks regarding its willingness to sell excess spectrum, are the triggers this time around. Nomura suggests investors stay cautious, noting the $2.8B value assigned by Leap to its spectrum is barely above its $2.6B net debt position. Leap filed its Q3 10-Q this morning. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday, November 9, 2012, 12:37 PM Sprint (S) has decided to refinance $2.28B worth of debt. It's redeeming $1.17B worth of 5.95% notes due 2014, and $1.11B worth of 7.375% notes due 2015, while issuing $2.28B worth of 6% notes due 2022. Many expect Sprint to use part of the $8B in proceeds it will get from the SoftBank (SFTBF.PK) deal to pare its $21B debt load. (PR) Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 1:01 PM More on RBC's upgrade of Clearwire (CLWR +3.8%): Analyst Jonathan Atkin thinks there's a decent chance Sprint (S) will fully buy out Clearwire following the closing of the SoftBank deal in 1H13, in spite of its current refusal to commit. Atkin notes SoftBank is already using the same frequency band for LTE that Clearwire is relying on, and sees the possibility of a deal providing "downside protection" for shares. He also considers a Sprint/Dish Network (DISH) 4G partnership a possibility. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 8:08 AM Sprint Nextel (S -1.2%) agrees to to pay $480M to U.S. Cellular (USM) for PCS spectrum and 585,000 subscribers in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. The deal, which includes the assumption of liabilities, will "significantly increase Sprint's network capacity and improve the customer experience." (PR) 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
- Friday, November 2, 2012, 2:47 PM The iPhone 5 is still supply-constrained at U.S. Apple Stores, says Piper's Gene Munster after polling 70 of them. He also found ongoing shortages at AT&T and Verizon, though Sprint's situation is said to be improving. Those comments are probably contributing to today's Apple (AAPL -2.7%) selloff, especially since Munster's Oct. 4 report on shortages proved accurate. On a more positive note, Munster's poll of 730 U.S. consumers found 55% of those planning to buy a smartphone indicating they want an iPhone 5. 37 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
