SAM vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
The Boston Beer Company, Inc. (“Boston Beer” or the “Company”) is the largest craft brewer and the largest independently-owned brewer overall in the United States. In fiscal 2009, Boston Beer sold approximately 2 million barrels of its proprietary products (“core brands”) and brewed or packaged... More

- Friday, May 17, 9:13 AM Big beer companies including Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD), Molson Coors (TAP), SABMiller (SBMRY.PK), Heineken (HINKY.PK), and Constellation Brands (STZ) support legislation that they say would take away some of the advantages craft brewers have on excise taxes. While separating the big boys like A-B from smaller local players is pretty easy, things get more confusing when trying to label brewers such as Boston Beer (SAM) and Craft Brew Alliance (BREW) with indy roots. What to watch: Though sluggish beer volume in the U.S. is a major concern, the battle over excise taxes could be just as big for bottom lines. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]

[On the Move] - Thursday, May 2, 10:17 AM Shares of Boston Beer (SAM -8.7%) get hammered after the company misses estimates with its Q1 report. A downgrade from Credit Agricole to Underperform isn't lightening the mood any. During the earnings call, execs made it clear the brewer will back Samuel Adams with capital and brand investments to help it recover from a market share decline. (transcript) Comment! - Wednesday, May 1, 7:04 PM More on Boston Beer (SAM): Q1 comes in mixed, beating on top line sales but coming up short on its bottom line. Net profit dropped 7.8% as higher brewing costs weighed on margins. Operating margins came in at 49.9%, far off the company's target of around 53% to 55%. Additionally, in its call, management warns that competition in the space has intensified as both big and small brewers are aggressively pushing their craft brands. To combat the threat, SAM has beefed up its marketing efforts. Consequently, ad, promotional and selling expenses climbed 19% Y/Y. Earnings Call Webcast. 2 Comments [Earnings, Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 1, 4:21 PM Boston Beer (SAM): Q1 EPS of $0.51 misses by $0.11. Revenue of $135.9M beats by $5.92M. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Breaking News, Consumer]
- Friday, April 19, 4:53 PM Beer brewers Molson Coors (TAP +6%), Boston Beer Co. (SAM +4.1%), and Craft Brew Alliance (BREW +4.5%) all closed with strong gains. News of Anheuser Busch's deal with the DOJ regarding the Grupo Modelo acquisition, replete with multiple U.S.-related concessions, may have helped. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 27, 10:27 AM The Beer Institute says it will oppose a measure aimed at lowering excise taxes on beer from smaller producers. The group - which reps big brewers such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD -1.2%), MillerCoors(SBMRY.PK), and Boston Beer (SAM -0.4%) - wants to see both large and small beer companies pay excise taxes at the same rate. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Monday, March 4, 7:01 AM Beer sales in the U.S. registered their first gain in four years in 2012, according to preliminary figures tabulated by Beverage Marketing. Though the 1.4% rise was modest, the shift toward beer from other alcohol options is welcome relief for brewers. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, February 20, 4:49 PM More on Boston Beer (SAM): Q4 comes in mixed, missing on its EPS but meeting revenue estimates. Total sales rose by 8% Y/Y strong demand for seasonal brews and newer products like Angry Orchard ciders, but net profit fell 5.1% as margins slid to 52.1% from 56.4% and prior-year results included a tax-settlement gain. Core shipment volume grew 9%, while depletions increased by 16%. FY13 EPS guidance of $4.70 - $5.10 straddles the $5.00 Street view. Shares -2% AH. 1 Comment [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]

- Wednesday, January 30, 10:14 AM Beer drinking in Germany fell to its lowest level since 1990 to extend a long trend of Germans imbibing less for health reasons and with other beverage choices grabbing their attention. The bigger issue: Though beer companies continue to point to emerging markets as potential areas for growth, it's starting to look unlikely that the sluggish demand in developed markets can be turned around. As a consequence, analysts see more M&A activity in the sector between brewers and non-alcoholic beverage companies. (Previous: BUD-PEP merger chatter) 2 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Monday, December 17, 2012, 10:48 AM Something is about to give up with Boston Beer (SAM +3%) after the company lifted its outlook for FY12 profits last week. For believers of social media sentiment tracking, the stock moved from neutral to strong positive. But also in the mix, shorts still hold a dominating position of 34% of all outstanding shares. SAM +21% since hiking guidance. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
