- Thursday, September 13, 2012, 4:18 AM Spanish banks Santander (SAN), BBVA (BBVA) and La Caixa will each provide €1.6B to an €8B state-backed loan that will form part of an €18B fund to help rescue Spain's cash-strapped regions, Reuters reports, with the government hoping to bring in other banks and the national lottery as well. A first round of €3B is expected to be granted on Sept. 26 to assist Catalonia and Valencia. 3 Comments [Financials, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 3:57 AM The EU is due to unveil today proposals to turn the ECB into the eurozone's banking supervisor by 2014 in what would be the first step towards a full banking union. The ECB would begin overseeing the bloc's largest banks from July 2013 and smaller institutions six months later, although national authorities would retain control of daily supervision. 1 Comment [Global & FX, Top Stories, Financials]
- Friday, September 7, 2012, 9:06 AM Banco Santander (SAN) wastes no time taking advantage of the quick turn in European sentiment, offering €2.5B of 3.5 year paper, and hoping to price it at the same yield it sold 2-year notes for a month ago. Order books closed with €6B in bids from about 400 accounts. Shares +3.2% premarket. 3 Comments [Financials]
- Tuesday, September 4, 2012, 1:24 PM Buyers of Banco Santander's (SAN) upcoming IPO of its Mexican unit will still have to keep a close eye on the bank's home country of Spain. "Who knows when they might sell the next 10%," says a fund manager, referring to capital needs back home forcing Santander to pressure its Mexican unit stock price by unloading more shares. Comment! [Financials]
- Friday, August 24, 2012, 3:33 AM Banco Santander (SAN) plans to list its Mexican subsidiary in Mexico and New York on September 25, Reuters report, with the Spanish bank looking to sell 6% in the unit's home country and 18.7% abroad. Santander hopes to raise $3B-$4B in the offering. 1 Comment [Financials]
- Thursday, August 16, 2012, 6:40 AM Banco Santander (SAN) says it will release a prospectus in the coming days for a listing of parts of its Mexican operations in Mexico and New York, not actually place the shares, as Reuters originally reported. Santander didn't say how much it intends to raise. The news follows speculation yesterday that Santander's Mexican unit plans to raise up to $4B in an early September IPO. Comment! [Financials]
- Wednesday, August 15, 2012, 3:23 PM Banco Santander's (SAN) Mexican unit plans to raise up to $4B in an early-September IPO, according to sources. The sale would carve off for the public about a 25-30% stake in the company. 1 Comment [Financials, Breaking News]

- Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 1:28 PM Among Jim Chanos' tip-offs for value traps: Cyclical and/or highly dependent on one product, and hindsight driving profit expectations. Among the stocks that fit: CONSOL Energy (CNX), Petrobas (PBR), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Coinstar (CSTR), Banco Santander (SAN), and Australia's Fortescue. 3 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Monday, June 25, 2012, 5:46 PM Moody's cuts long-term debt and deposit ratings for 28 Spanish banks between one and four notches. The move comes in the wake of this month's downgrade of the country's sovereign debt. The only banks rated above the sovereign: Banco Santander (SAN) and Santander Consumer Finance, for diversification and sufficient Tier 1 capital. (The big chart) Comment! Time to pick how SAN dividends are paid - paid in scrip avoids the 21% Spanish withholding. - View all 15 replies
-
pgaines72: is being paid the dividend in scrip the same as dividend reinvestment?(drip) -
Michael Terry: essentially. You are receiving shares in lieu of cash and avoiding withholding.

If you want to bet on the eurozone crisis, buy Banco Santander (SAN). It has a 8% dividend. But I am still bearish on banks. - View all 1 replies
-
kevinbwall: I purchased SAN calls for 2014. After reading Jubak, and others, think there is a consensus; STD is a great stock.
