- Friday, March 23, 2012, 12:44 PM Though Larry Ellison isn't a fan, Bernstein's Mark Moerdler sees a lot of potential for SAP's Hana in-memory database. Moerdler, who upgraded SAP 10 days ago, thinks Hana sales could grow from less than $225M last year to $750M this year, and reach $4.4B in 2015, as companies start using it to run mission-critical software such as ERP and BI. He also praises some of the in-memory technology innovations developed by SAP to make Hana a success. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, March 20, 2012, 5:31 PM Also heard during Oracle's (ORCL) FQ3 call (webcast): Larry Ellison engages in some of his customary trash-talking. He criticizes Salesforce.com's (CRM) cloud apps as not having the security features of Oracle's Fusion apps, and bashes SAP's cloud offerings as focused on smaller businesses. As for SAP's Hana in-memory database? "We've been working on [in-memory technology] for years," Ellison boasts, citing Oracle's TimesTen product. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, March 15, 2012, 5:12 PM Salesforce.com (CRM) has rolled out a cloud HR product that will compete with Oracle/Taleo and SAP/SuccessFactors, and which stems from Salesforce's December acquisition (I, II) of Rypple. Salesforce says it likes the cloud HR space due to its huge number of potential users, and its social networking tie-ins. The company is also introducing Site.com, a product that helps companies publish new content to multiple sites and social networks. (earlier) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 13, 2012, 11:51 AM SAP (SAP +1.6%) gains after Bernstein upgrades the shares to Outperform from Market Perform earlier this morning, saying its HANA in-memory database is likely to be a disruptive technology. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, March 12, 2012, 12:34 PM Enterprise software firms large and small are giving their support to in-memory technology, which can deliver a massive performance boost for analytics applications by moving data from a storage system's hard drives onto a server's DRAM. SAP is among those with the most to gain from this trend, given the surging popularity of its Hana in-memory database. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 2:24 PM SAP plans to use a phantom stock incentive program in order to help it motivate employees to stay with the firm. The benefit will provide workers with an investment that mirrors the movement of the German company's stock - up 24% YTD - without giving them actual ownership rights. 2 Comments [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 12:00 PM IDC estimates total spending on technology and services for big data, a catch-all phrase covering analytics projects featuring huge datasets and non-traditional tools, will post a 40% annual growth rate between 2010 and 2016, and reach $16.9B. IBM, EMC, ORCL, RHT, and SAP are some of the major tech firms targeting the space (I, II, III). Big data software firm Spunk recently filed for an IPO. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, March 6, 2012, 6:54 PM SAP, which just acquired SuccessFactors for $3.4B, is looking to "add new businesses every 18 months or so," says co-CEO Jim Snabe. Like other SAP execs, Snabe boasts his company has undergone a major cultural shift as of late, and that it wants to be a major player in collaboration software. Could that last remark be a sign SAP is eying Yammer or Jive Software (JIVE - previously)? Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Saturday, February 25, 2012, 10:15 AM Cloud software companies are being acquired left and right (I, II, III, IV), but most of these deals will be failures for the acquirers, says industry exec Flip Filipowski. The acquired companies sport agile, dynamic cultures whose best talent won't stick around post-merger, rather than deal with the bureaucracy of a larger firm. As a result, the acquiring companies will often end up fielding "immature half-baked offerings" that are surpassed by new upstarts. 6 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, February 23, 2012, 6:14 PM SAP, which is coming off a strong 2011, will propose at its annual shareholder meeting that a dividend of €1.10/share be paid for FY11, up 83% from 2010's €0.60/share. This figure includes a special dividend of €0.35/share. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, February 9, 2012, 8:56 AM More on the Oracle (ORCL) - Taleo (TLEO) deal: Larry Elison used to be famously dismissive of cloud computing but Oracle is delving further and further with the purchase of Taleo, a provider of online human resources software. The deal also follows on the heels of SAP (SAP) buying Taleo peer SuccessFactors for $3.4B. Comment! [M&A, Tech, Top Stories]
- Tuesday, February 7, 2012, 6:44 AM Oracle (ORCL) rejects a $272M award in an IP theft case against SAP as it looks for a bigger payout to match an original jury award of $1.3B in the case. A new trial between the software rivals could take years to resolve. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, February 2, 2012, 7:09 AM SAP announces that it extended its cash tender offer for Successfactors (SFSF) to Feb. 8. Shares of SFSF trade just a hair below the $40 tender price. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, January 30, 2012, 8:02 AM SAP (SAP) is open to licensing its HANA analytics software to arch-rival Oracle (ORCL), co-CEO Bill McDermott says. "The question is whether Oracle can imagine it." McDermott notes that the likes of Cisco, Dell, Fujitsu and Hewlett-Packard already work with HANA. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, January 26, 2012, 1:44 PM "This ain’t your grandfather’s SAP," boasts SuccessFactors (SFSF) CEO Lars Dalgaard, following SAP's deal to acquire his company. Hopes are up that Dalgaard & co. will provide SAP with a better Silicon Valley foothold, and contribute to a culture change that has seen SAP ramp its cloud efforts, target the fast-growing analytics market, and focus more on selling to individual corporate divisions rather than CIOs. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 25, 2012, 2:38 AM SAP (SAP) expects operating profit to rise as much as 11.5% this year, with "significant momentum" going into 2012. FY operating profit will rise to €5.05B-5.25B from €4.71B in 2011, surpassing analysts' 2012 expectations of €4.91B. Comment! [Tech]
