- Friday, April 19, 9:28 AM SAP -3% following a Q1 revenue miss highlighted by by a drop in software license growth to 5% Y/Y from Q4's 9%. Likewise, high-margin support revenue grew 8%, down from Q4's 12%. On the bright side, Hana sales (a part of license revenue) rose 3x to €86M, and cloud subscription/support sales (boosted by acquisitions) rose to €167M from a mere €35M a year ago, with backlog up to €800M. Consulting revenue -7%. Asia-Pac license/cloud subscription sales declined Y/Y, with SAP hinting China/Japan were responsible. The report follows weak software numbers from Oracle, Red Hat, and IBM. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 17, 9:26 AM Workday (WDAY) +1.7% after Wedbush's Steve Koenig starts coverage with an Outperform and $76 PT. "WDAY is a play on the potential for cloud computing to fundamentally remake the $25B [ERP software] market, just as it has disrupted the $13B [CRM software] market," Koenig writes, while adding checks indicate strong interest in cloud ERP from "enterprises saddled with expensive on-premise systems that are costly to maintain and update." NetSuite (N) is another cloud ERP vendor; SAP has the most to lose if the market takes off on a large scale. (yesterday) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 21, 11:52 AM SAP's (SAP -2.1%) board recommends a regular dividend of €0.85/share ($1.10/share) for FY12. SAP paid a regular dividend of €0.75/share and a special dividend of €0.35/share for FY11. The proposal translates into a yield of 1% and a payout ratio of 36%. Shares are trading lower today in sympathy with archrival Oracle. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Dividends]
- Wednesday, March 20, 4:44 PM Some enterprise IT names slump in response to Oracle's FQ3 miss, which included a surprising 2% Y/Y drop in new software license/cloud subscription revenue, and a 23% Y/Y drop in hardware product sales. InfiniBand hardware supplier Mellanox (MLNX) is the worst-hit, -7% AH. IBM -1%. HPQ -1%. EMC -1.2%. RHT -1.9%. VMW -1%. TIBX -1.2%. TDC -1%. Archrival SAP is unchanged for now. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, January 25, 10:44 AM Informatica's (INFA +10.4%) big Q4 beat (I, II) is stoking a rally in enterprise software stocks. Microsoft's decent Server & Tools performance might also be helping . Business intelligence/analytics firms are among the standouts - SPLK +2.8%. QLIK +7.2%. TIBX +3.8%. TDC +3.9%. MSTR +3.5% - but there are also others. SAP +2.6%. RHT +3.3%. N +2.4%. CTXS +1.7%. On its earnings call, Informatica noted Facebook is a buyer of its new PowerCenter Big Data Edition software, which can handle data integration projects on Hadoop clusters and many other platforms. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 23, 2:37 PM Some enterprise software stocks are trading higher following market-pleasing reports from IBM, SAP, and CA. IBM's earnings call tone and forecast for mid-single-digit 2013 software growth are going over well, as is SAP's (SAP +1.2%) guidance for 2013 software license/cloud subscription revenue growth of 14%-20% at constant currencies - cloud is expected to make up €750M ($998M) of this total. INFA +4.5%. CRM +2.2%. JIVE +2.5%. RHT +2.4%. CTXS +2.2%. CVLT +1.5%. VMW +1.7%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 15, 12:00 PM With shares nearly priced to perfection following a big 6-month rally, SAP (SAP -4.3%) is selling off after pre-announcing light operating income and revenue (€5.06B vs. €5.12B consensus) for Q4. The report does note Hana revenue surged to nearly €200M from Q3's €83M, but software license growth of 9% Y/Y is a slowdown from Q3's 17%. Cloud subscription/support revenue nearly doubled Q/Q to €159M, but is still just 3% of total sales. EMEA software sales +8%, Americas +3%, Asia-Pac +23%. Oracle recently claimed it took share from SAP in Europe. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]

Premarket gainers: EXPR +14%. QLGC +8%. SNTS +8%. RSH +6%.
Losers: COOL -32%. GIVN -14%. BODY -12%. LULU -6%. TELK -6%. SAP -5%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, January 15, 8:39 AM SAP dives 5.2% in Frankfurt after announcing Q4 operating profit of €1.96B, short of expectations for €2B. The move is dragging down the DAX, which is now off 1%. EWG -1.4% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Global & FX]
- Thursday, January 10, 4:03 PM SAP (SAP +2.9%) closes higher after announcing its core Business Suite ERP, CRM, and HR apps will now be supported by its popular Hana in-memory database. This significantly expands the addressable market for Hana, whose ability to enable real-time analytics and reporting for other SAP apps has already fueled blistering growth. Bernstein has predicted Hana support will also be extended to non-SAP apps. Oracle (ORCL) is trying to counter Hana via its costly Exadata X3 system. (more) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 5:01 PM Tibco (TIBX) -14.7% AH after warning it expects to report FQ4 (ended Nov. 30) revenue of $292M-$295M and EPS of $0.37-$0.38, below a consensus of $316M and $0.44. Tibco blames a mix of soft government spending, Sandy-related deal delays, and poor execution in its infrastructure (i.e. middleware) business, particularly in the Americas. The FQ4 report arrives on Dec. 20. It could be a rough day for enterprise software stocks tomorrow: QLIK -3.7%. PRGS -1.4%. RHT -2.3%. INFA -1.1%. CTXS -1%. ORCL -0.9%. SAP -0.8%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 12:18 PM SAP (SAP +2.9%) is closing on its 52-week high after receiving an upgrade to Outperform from William Blair. The firm argues SAP is benefiting from acquisitions, new innovations, end-to-end product suites, and strong demand for its Hana in-memory database. SAP's sales growth has easily outpaced that of archrival Oracle (ORCL) in recent quarters. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 9:18 AM IBM is buying cloud HR software vendor Kenexa (KNXA) for $1.3B, or $46/share. The price represents a 42% premium to Kenexa's Friday close. The acquisition follows SAP and Oracle's purchases of peers SuccessFactors and Taleo, and comes as Workday, another big name in the space, prepares an IPO. Cornerstone OnDemand (CSOD), a cloud HR name that hasn't found a buyer yet, could trade higher on the news. IBM expects the acquisition to close in Q4. - Thursday, August 2, 2012, 6:54 PM SAP is paying archrival Oracle (ORCL) $306M in damages to make a long-running intellectual property theft suit go away. A jury awarded Oracle $1.3B in damages in 2010, but a judge lowered that figure to $272M last year. SAP has already paid $120M in legal fees to Oracle, and a $20M fine to the DOJ. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, July 12, 2012, 9:36 AM SAP +3.9% after reporting preliminary Q2 revenue of €3.9B ($4.75B), up 18% Y/Y and above a consensus of €3.8B. Software revenue was €1.06B (+26% Y/Y), and operating profit was €0.92B. SAP's software growth soundly exceeded the 7% license growth delivered by archrival Oracle (ORCL) in its May quarter, as well as its 0%-10% guidance for the August quarter. The results are a breath of fresh air for enterprise software following warnings from Informatica and Qlik. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 2:46 PM Though it didn't come cheap, UBS and Nomura are praising SAP's (SAP -0.7%) $4.3B acquisition (I, II) of Ariba (ARBA). The former notes the kind of B2B transactions handled by Ariba's network cover 63% of all trade, and the latter argues the deal will help SAP achieve its goal of obtaining €2B in cloud revenue in 2015. Smaller Ariba rival SciQuest (SQI +6.2%) is rallying for the second straight day. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]

What's the best way to play SaaS growth? Buy stocks like $CSOD & $WDAY, or short $SAP& $ORCL? - View all 12 replies
-
Modernist: Its not 1:1! SaaS is a push towards efficiency. Net earnings of sellers will be reduced. -
Jorge Aura: In my humble opinion, I think that playing short in $ORCL is a good idea, but the stock has a short % of float in 0.80%.
