Technicals and Triple Bottoms: What the Charts Have to Say [view article]
I forgot to mention a few things. First, short-interest is massive despite the high amount of stock owned by insiders (and also 5%+ institutional holders). Second, the volume on the rally back to resistance has been massive. Finally, by starting your chart in March, you miss out on the fact that this was a 24 dollar stock last September. A 50% retracement gets you to 16. ReplyBrochstein

I am long BJRI and like the chart - looks like classic cup an handle. Wish I had gotten in at the bottom, but I didn't - bought in on the pullback. It's in my model portfolio at InvestByModel.com as well (Top 20 Model). I love your non-technical analysis description: "the place is a mess". Actually, it isn't, but the environment is pretty tough now. Yet, despite their large CA exposure, they are hanging in there. I have visited a couple of their newly opened restaurants in Texas - wow. Jammed packed, but they run a great operation. My objective near-term is 15 - then you can probably buy it on a pullback. Once the economy stabilizes, this company has the potential to grow at 20+% for many years due to its relatively small footprint at present. freshOne, my thoughts exactly. it really sucks when the big money is just sloshing things around out there. retail investors just have to stand aside and watch it all go down because there's nothing they can do about it. sad state of affairs. that's why i focused on the technicals with this post because FCX has ridiculously cheap valuations right now and will be a great company going forward. but, since hedge funds are puking it up right now it has a strong chance of going even lower and getting even cheaper. ReplyTechnicals and Triple Bottoms: What the Charts Have to Say [view article]
this is a sad story these companies are controlled and are at the mercy of hedge funds and the company's earning or future has nothing to do with share values... there is some thing wrong with the system. Just a crap shoot ... best comapies go down the most and horrible companies go high just becasue they are deemed "in favor" for no good reason. i cant wait until it turns and the shorts get burried...while its most likely a long ass way off and the shorts will proably get rich first..yet still fun for me FCX has wiped me out. I agree with your BJRI technical analysis, it's right on. On the fundamental side, BJ is at a larger disadvantage than the national chains since many of it's restaurants are located in parts of California where the recession has hit hardest. Also their PE is out of line considering their SSS are shrinking. A PE of 11 or 12 would be more logical, anything over 20 doesn't make sense for a company contracting. With that in mind, I would forecast that within one year, BJRI will be an $8.00 stock. ReplyBaklava

I like your chart setups. I will be following FCX, GS, and SBS to see if they break their support levels. If they do I'm on board for a short-term short play. ReplyInvestor

I hate to break it to you - but I think I remember Jennifer now :(Jennifer- correct me if I am wrong---Did you not tell people to sell Visa a week (on a seeking alpha post)? (This was when V was about 65- and before it went on its run to 89). We all make mistakes and not trying to attack you- but was that you?

Gato- I've read your comments - and realize your sentiment. The problem (and the thing that people need to realize about Seeking Alpha) is that author's writing these posts often use them to gain experience on stock coverage. In this case- the 'giveaway' was the parroted claim of Brazil's 50% plus 'middle class'. Having spent considerable time in South America- and being a long term investor in Bovespa traded stock - as well as ADRs (Brazilian/Arg/Per/Ch/... I can tell you that these little write-ups are taken at face value. Anyone with 'feet on the ground' realizes just how inaccurate such staements are.Now- like I said earlier- Gato does make some great points- as do some of the other individuals- but the way to play Brazil right now is on the kind of rallies that we had this week. This is what we've been talking about on the South American Stocks blog (click 'website') for the past few weeks.
As long as we have dollar (US) value fluctuation, heavy inflation, competing geopolitical events, and a wavering demand- combined with a general global slowdown- commodities will be turbulent. As Bovespa's is over 50points weighted in commodities this will be the single biggest factor. That - and the fact that the 70point foriegn cap trading on Bovespa is fickle at best.
If you are a LONG term investor- there is very little downside in GGB/RIO/EWZ/PBR/ITU/BB... - but you would be better off to follow my advice and buy on dips and sell into the mini rallies on PBR (argentine and brazil units)- ggb/rio/sid,Take profits after 5/6/7 points- don't get greedy and ride the peaks and valleys over the next couple of months- until the ground stabilizes.

Hmmm!..My last rant (Aug 19th.) kicked up some dust, got some notice, some thought I was harsh...that's a definite.. "maybe"..but... when a person (I assumed Ms.Jennifer Yousfi, who made those recommendations, is an stock analyst) she had a responsibility to provide... "some"... facts to support her recommendation. I consider my.. "harsh feed-back".. will have a positive effect, if she ever reads it. I didn't "cut her any slack"..'cause she's a lady, and because there's people's money/savings at risk...some "might" have noticed we're in a .. Ahem!.."Bear Market", where one has to think on "the return of money, 'an not on the return from money. That's why not to mention that the ADR's represented 43% of a semi-public co. with the other 53% owned by a socialistic gov. with a extreme dislike of "foreign speculators" (their spin) extremely important part of the background information...I still do...so no apology. I don't take prisoners, 'cause in my line of work mistakes can cost lives....Gees, I'm sorry!..won't cut it.So this (rant) is not about Brazil, it's more about investing in general, AND so called "investors" like me, thinking that there is "someone out there" with the "real info" ready to give it to me ...for free yet..Hmmm!.. that's not the way the investment world works...'an I have the scars to prove it..with a portfolio down $24K. ...(Ouch!..grrrr!)..so far this year. Usually brokers,...No!..scratc... that!..Often, when broker's like Merrill Lynch, Citi. LSH, GS..recommend a stock..what's really going on is "they want to unload that issue onto the small time (joe sixpack) investor. (See the latest headlines on MER, C, being sued for their fraudulent behaviour(s))...and they will give very convincing info. why we should buy..and we do...Hmmm!,..and guess what....****** fill in (your) blank!... Warren Buffet said:"if you're in the game five minutes and don't know who the "mark" is...guess what?..you're it....get it?
Bottom line,..1.We have to become our own experts, with our own research to include:
2. What is the trend?.. 'an trade with it...no ..Buts!
3.What is our comfort/style long or short term..(long term for me is 20 days)
4. Valuations..P/book,..P... flow (positive or negative..if you're comfortable shorting)
4. TA. technical analysis will show movement 'an how to play it. The great thing about TA...is, that it gives instant info. of what's happening....NOW...not what... "should"..ha... (helps to isolate the ego)
There's more, ..."stuff" but I've gone too far already..time to "shut up!

Brazil always has long term potential. Easy credit in recent years has increased sales to the middle class at exorbitant interest rates that ultimately will be defaulted upon in huge numbers just like in the US. Brazil was an easy play as was China and India 5 years ago. Now going forward I would be very selective and nimble in trading Brazilian ADRs. Look at what Petrobras' stock has done to Warren Buffet in the last six months--that one was suppose to be a no brainer. Replyocks

Brazil has long-term potential. But in the short-term anything can happen. Brazilian banks like ITU and BBD are risky as well due to over-extended consumers. While ERJ is a good start, the government there should invest in other diversified sectors while the commodities are going at least somewhat strong.
