SBUX vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
Starbucks is the premier roaster and retailer of specialty coffee in the world. Starbucks Corporation was formed in 1985 and its common stock trades on the NASDAQ Global Select Market (“NASDAQ”) under the symbol “SBUX.” Starbucks (together with its subsidiaries, “Starbucks” or the “Company”)... - Tuesday, March 19, 12:24 PM No retail chain has more outlets than 7-Eleven and the convenience store operator is still growing. The company says it added 5K stores in 2012 and will hit 50K stores by the end of Q1. It's a pace of expansion which should draw the notice of quick-stop rivals Dunkin' Donuts (DNKN -0.2%), Starbucks (SBUX -1.2%), and McDonald's (MCD -0.2%). 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 19, 7:20 AM Starbucks (SBUX) buys its first coffee farm with the purchase of a 600-acre property in Costa Rica. The company plans to test new coffee varieties and do research at the location. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, March 15, 7:05 PM Morgan Stanley selects 20 stocks for the long term, based on "competitive advantages, business model, pricing power, cost efficiency and growth": AMZN, AMT, BLK, CPN, CP, CVX, COST, EL, GILD, HON, JPM, LTD, MON, NWSA, PM, RPM, SBUX, SYMC, TMO, WMB. 13 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Monday, March 11, 2:46 PM Starbucks (SBUX) continues to increase its investment in locally-sourced coffee beans in China as it sees forecasts for coffee consumption for the region continue to move higher. The market for packaged coffee products is estimated to be set to rise 75% to 16B yuan ($2.5B) by 2017 which fall in line with the company's plans for 1,500 stores by 2015. Early response to American phenomenon Starbucks in lower-tier Chinese cities has been stronger than expected. 1 Comment [Consumer]

Starbucks (SBUX), Time Warner (TWX) and LabCorp (LH) are among dozens of companies attempting to block decisions by the National Labor Relations Board following a court ruling in January that found President Barack Obama's board appointments to be unconstitutional. The companies, as well as some unions, have argued that the NLRB doesn't have the authority to make the decisions because of the ruling.
1 Comment [U.S. Economy, Top Stories, Consumer, Healthcare, Tech] - Friday, March 8, 3:46 PM Don't look now but shares of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR +2.6%) have shot right past $50 and continue to trek higher as many of the dire predictions from the bear camp seem to be falling away - in particular the death-by-Verismo argument. (Google Trends: Keurig/Vue vs. Verismo). Next phase: With Starbucks (SBUX +1.2%) not doing so bad itself, does this mean the market is plenty big enough for both companies to prosper in the coffee machine/consumables space? 5 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, March 8, 11:36 AM What's the right mix for U.S. fast-food companies in China? Though forecasts for the QSR market in the nation range as high as spectacular 50% growth by 2015, some analysts remain wary the novelty could wear off and burn those expanding too fast. China plans: 1) McDonald's (MCD +1.4%) wants 2K locations by the end of 2013 which will still stand far below the 5.2K outlets Yum Brands (YUM +1.2%) operates. 2) Starbucks (SBUX +0.9%) is easing into China with a plan for 1.5K stores by 2015 3) Privately-owned Subway has 374 locations with more on tap. 4) Burger King (BKW +0.1%) (<100 locations) and Wendy's (WEN -0.2%) are currently non-factors but keep talking up China. 1 Comment [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Friday, March 8, 9:09 AM Bloomberg vs. Starbucks (SBUX): The company says it won't make any immediate changes to its drink menu in New York City to account for the new sugary drink ban in place. The company sees itself outside of the new rules since its larger drinks are custom-ordered by customers for extra sugar. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 7, 10:57 AM Vestact CEO Paul Theron says his firm is swapping out of Coca-Cola (KO -0.1%) in favor of Starbucks (SBUX +1.1%) with the road ahead for coffee looking more wide open than that of soda. The firm also likes the potential for Starbucks in China where its moderated pace of expansion could pay off. 2 Comments [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, March 6, 2:54 PM Is Starbucks (SBUX +1.3%) immune to consumer spending worries? Bank of America is out with a positive note on the resilient food company pointing to channel checks which show strong sales momentum running nicely right along with the declining coffee input costs it's seeing. The firm has a $65 price target on shares. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, February 22, 8:50 AM The restaurant sector is on watch after a pre-earnings warning from Darden Restaurants (DRI) and a harsh downgrade on Wendy's (WEN) sets a negative tone. The picture being painted for 2013 is starting to get pretty consistent - margin pain and soft traffic trends. Other things to watch in 2013 for the sector: 1) The impact of higher payroll taxes. 2) The coming costs of the Affordable Care Act. 3) The push to raise the minimum wage. 4) Which chains can succeed in China and India? 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, February 18, 7:01 AM Starbucks (SBUX) intends to more than double its headcount in Asia Pacific, which excludes China, India and Japan, to 40,000 over the next five years. Asia Pacific "has been a growth engine and will continue to be a growth engine despite economic uncertainty," says Starbucks' Jinlong Wang. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, February 13, 10:14 AM Margin pain on the horizon: Restaurants could get squeezed this year from a combination of higher commodity costs and frugal consumers, according to AlixPartners. Though traffic is forecast to rise 3%, the average ticket is expected to decline 4.7% with coupons, promotions, and discounts gaining favor. Chains that are expected to ride out the expected tough environment are those that can deliver healthy food fast. Chipotle (CMG -1.8%), privately-held Subway, and Panera (PNRA -1.5%) fit the bill. 6 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, February 11, 6:50 AM British coffee chain Costa aims to take on Starbucks (SBUX) in China with a plan to have 250 stores opened by the end of the year in the region and 500 stores operational by 2016. It's a slower pace of expansion than Starbucks, but still pits the world's second biggest coffee company against the largest in a key market. 1 Comment [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Friday, February 8, 1:36 PM Starbucks (SBUX +0.9%) announces it lined up a new credit facility to replace the one set to mature next year. The new credit facility will increase the company's borrowing capacity to $750M from a previous level of $500M. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 29, 8:30 AM Retail shakeup: Could the potential closure of a third of all of Barnes & Noble's retail stores over the next ten years give a boost to Starbucks (SBUX)? It's a question which will be closely watched as analysts dissect Starbucks' retail strategy in the U.S. with saturation issues still cropping up in some markets. 4 Comments [Consumer]

wigit5: OM I'm thinking the selling is overdone on SBUX what are your thoughts if it opens down 3%? -
Ocean Man: I held until it went back to 60. I still like the company, but it was an earnings play for me. The gain was in the pre-earnings run-up.
