    Scholastic Corp. (SCHL +5.5%) and Lions Gate (LGF +3.4%) are both higher today in anticipation of Friday's movie debut of "The Hunger Games." nationwide. Last week Scholastic said sales of the book trilogy had reached a high point for the quarter, but some investors fear that the feverish interest in the film may already be priced-in to both stocks.

    Shares of Scholastic (SCHL) power up a 22.2% gain after reporting a significantly slimmer loss than expected in FQ3 - helped by the runaway success of The Hunger Games trilogy that continues to drive profits. For 2012, the company expects total revenue of approximately $2.0B and EPS to fall between $2.60 and $2.90.

    Scholastic (SCHL +3.3%) acquires Learners Publishing, a Singapore-based English language learning supplemental publisher, for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition is expected to significantly enhance the company's portfolio of products in the English Language Learning segment.

    Scholastic (SCHL +4.2%) execs give a peek under the hood in an earnings CC discussing FQ2 results. The most interesting tidbit is the firm's sweeping commitment to take its business to an online model including cutting costs and reducing a voluntary retirement program to find the money for technology spending. Scholastic hopes to realize gains from its investment when it launches ereading apps in ebookstores this spring and a broad ebook launch to teachers and parent customers for back-to-school 2012.

    Former governors Jeb Bush and Jim Hunt advocate embracing online education to appeal to the modern-day student who "is divorced from the static, brick-and-mortar reality of institutions built for 19th century economic circumstances" - a less romantic vision of college that Ivy League profs might see. If the proposed business model gains steam, will  SCHL, APOL, COCO, STRA, and DV take a revenue hit?

    Education stocks are kicking into a higher gear today and recapturing some ground lost after suffering a wave of downgrades and declining enrollment. A reiterated Buy rating from Gabelli on Scholastic (SCHL -0.1%) - along with its earnings beat - may have kickstarted the second look at the sector. Gainers: DV +6.6%, NAUH +10%, STRA +4.2%, CECO +4.4%.

The company announces plans to cut $15M in costs, and reaffirms its FY12 outlook for total revenue of approximately $1.9B and an EPS in the range of $1.75 to $2.10, in line with expectations.
