The green and red color coding on the seeking alpha earnings announcements makes it eay to create a watch list of compnaies that have beats earnings. I like to check back with these companies in a few days ater the announcement volatility settles down. This site also provides an excellent quick overview of current company news and earnings before the market opens. Reply

Ten Companies Involved in Treating Asthma [view article]
SNY has been a steady investment over the years....(apple of my eye).
Doubters -- Look to their pipeline (phase 2 and 3 trials, respectfully).
SNY's growth model is crystal clear, and while I am unsure of the company's asthma treatment med involvement, overall, it does offer an expansive suite of innovative
    (and timely) global pharma products.

Pfizer Should Buy Amgen or Wyeth - Credit Suisse [view article]
do a bunch of small deals would be my option for Pfe! Pharma is changing away from mega deals like the Lipitor Deal they did several years ago. Reason being is Competition in a MC World. In a MC world formulary control becomes the driver. No one pays for a med w/ o proven benefit "Outcomes" in our Brave New World! So you mine for selected Targeted Therapies that you can adroitly market. I see this as the new Pharma paradigm. Watch Pfe buy the Mid Sized biotech who is completing Phase-3 and is before FDA pending approval on 1 or 2 candidates w/ 1 already on the market in an area that is compatible w/ their Marketing/Research Reply

Pfizer, J&J Would Be Front Runners in a Sepracor Buyout [view article]
Sepracor (SEPR), known for its popular sleep aid drug Lunesta, took a dive in value of more than 20% over the last month. It has been bad news for them all year, now trading at less than 50% of their high. Most of the focus is on bad management issues: over paying for a new drug, miscalculating Medicare rebates, not getting enough market share of insomniacs. But I don't think they are all that bad. I looked into their management a little bit and they seem like they are a good combination of guys creating a pipeline drug business that is going to be around for a long time.

To start the drug that they "supposedly" over payed for was part of a move to hedge out into different therapeutic areas of the pharmaceutical industry, which I think is a great move. SEPR is no 11 figure Glaxosmithkline (GSK) or Merck & Co. Inc (MRK), but its also not a monotone bio-pharma like Bio-Marin Pharmaceutical Inc. (BMRN) trading at 77 times earnings. Sepracor has approved drugs for allergies, asthma and insomnia, they are in phase 3 with an epilepsy med and have a bunch more in the pipeline.

The numbers look decent too. The market cap right now is just over $2.5, bil, but it does half of that in revenue. It trades like the big barons (PFE, LLY, SNY, MRK, GSK) in terms of P:E but still offers huge growth prospects; being that it is valued at a percent or two of those companies and the introduction of one of SEPR's drugs could tsunami their balance sheet.

Analysts don't expect Serpacor to earn as much money as management does, but when they announced that the stock plummeted. They also supplemented their contradiction with a downgrade and I think that is why it is already a value. Institutions have their entire fist in this company, but there is still over 2 million shares trading daily. If management can follow through at the end of the week I would expect the news to travel.

The reported mess that could exist at Serpacor is a huge short term risk. I read an expectation as low as $20 for a share. If it gets down that low before Friday it would seem to be a good buy because bad news would just provide evidence for that price and would probably not send it any lower. But, if the mess is not as bad as everyone expects, this stock has good upside potential.

If you like my comment check out my new blog at DanielNathel.blogspot....

Disclosure: I may buy this stock in the near future.

"unusual market-cap-meets-price... methodology" ? i definitely don't understand why AAPL is 12-13% of the Naz-100 index.

for example: GOOG is both a bigger market cap AND a higher stock price. then how the hell is AAPL weighted higher? i have searched for the answer, but to no avail so far.

    any clarification would be appreciated.

Jim Cramer's Mad Money In-Depth. 11/1/07: Brocade Saddles Up [view article]
Kramer keeps supporting Celgene but the news is out on its only two drugs, Revlimid and Thalidomide both of limited use outside of myeloma and some uncommon blood disorders. Its stock is in my judgment very overpriced. I own 5000 shares of Millenium and I am a happy camper today. I am also an oncologist and find Celgene's pricing for its drugs and its corporate behavior outrageous. Remember Velcade is IV and revlimid is po. Given equivalency which do you think an oncologist would choose? Reply

My comments are very similar, and, much to my chagrin, I was going to use the old "apples and oranges" analogy as well. I would throw in some reimbursement risk as well. Reply

What you fail to realize is SEPR's drugs have no intellectual property protection. Valuing SEPRs assets using 25-35x implies terminal value that SEPR simply does not have. Lunesta has but 5 years of IP life left and Xopenex either 1 or 5. MEDI's assets have another 20 years left to them.

Sorry, this is apples and oranges.
