Credit Suisse declares Sears Holdings' (SHLD +1.9%) recent rally a "classic short squeeze," and is skeptical rumors (I, II) of an LBO deal will pan out, given Sears' weak positioning. Though believing the announcement of new store closings during Sears' Jan. 25-26 analyst day meetings would be a positive for shares, Credit Suisse is reiterating an Underperform and $20 PT.

Skeptical of rumors that PE firms might take Sears (SHLD +8.2%) private, Imperial Capital's Mary Ross Gilbert tells CNBC the retailer has bigger issues that could make a going-private transaction impossible, "including significant cash burn with rapidly deteriorating financial performance and reduced liquidity, particularly if the major vendors become reluctant to fund holiday 2012 shipments."

One possible reason for the indifferent reaction in J.C. Penney (JCP +0.6%) shares to the retailer's new stake in Martha Stewart (MSO +33.3%): Kmart's (SHLD) similar deal with MSO a while back was a disaster. The spike in MSO is harder to explain, since the deal appears to end the "strategic alternatives" it was considering. Were there no good offers, or does Martha refuse to sell?
