- Thursday, August 30, 2012, 11:38 AM "(The) monetary transmission mechanism (is) working okay in some places," exclaims Richard Barley, as Siemens (SI) takes advantage of low rates (for some), and issues a 2-year sterling-denominated note paying a coupon of 0.375%. The company is selling longer-term paper as well, planning to use the proceeds to buy back stock. 3 Comments [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 2:45 PM Struggling and restructuring Nokia Siemens (NOK, SI) is in "advanced talks" to sell its Business Support Systems division, says Bloomberg. The division, which provides billing services to carriers, has reportedly drawn interest from Ericsson (ERIC), Amdocs (DOX), and P-E firms. Sources think it could fetch a sale price of €300M ($377M). Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 9:47 AM Siemens (SI), GE and start-up backed by Bill Gates are among those developing different methods for storing surplus energy. It's not just about batteries, with one technique using excess electricity to pump compressed air into caves and then releasing that air to generate power when needed. The storage is needed to cope with the vagaries of solar and wind energy. 16 Comments [Energy]
- Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 5:38 AM Greece gets a bit of cheer after Siemens (SI) agrees to a €330M deal to settle bribery allegations connected to the Athens Olympics in 2004. However, the settlement is far less than the €2B that Greek parliamentarians demanded last year. Still, the deal includes the construction of a factory that will lead to over 700 jobs. 2 Comments [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 4:16 AM The Department of Homeland Security is investigating a possible security flaw in software from Siemens (SI) unit RuggedCom that is used in specialized networking equipment and could enable hackers to attack power plants and other vital infrastructure. The report on RuggedCom's vulnerability is the 90th this year about possible risks to critical infrastructure. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 3:12 AM Siemens (SI) is reportedly in talks about cutting thousands of jobs due to the weak economy, especially in Europe. The conglomerate, which recently warned that its FY goals will be difficult to achieve, will make any decisions in the autumn. Siemens has over the last 15 months been on a hiring spree, increasing employee numbers by 23,000. 2 Comments [Top Stories]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 10:51 AM The U.S. added ~6,800 MW of new wind power generation in 2011, 31% more than was added in 2010, a new Energy Department report says; U.S. wind generation now totals nearly 47K MW. Federal incentives, which have driven new wind installations, are set to expire at the end of 2012; the White House says as many as 37K U.S. jobs could be lost if the tax credits are not renewed. 21 Comments [Energy]

[On the Move] - Friday, August 3, 2012, 4:38 AM Siemens (SI +4.5% in Frankfurt) has started a €3B stock buyback, as approved at its annual meeting in January 2011, the conglomerate said late yesterday. Siemens will use the program to reduce stock, for employee compensation, and for convertible and warrant bonds. Siemens is also canceling 33M treasury shares worth €2.23B, based on yesterday's closing price. Comment! [On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 2:47 PM "I am not going to blame anything else than ourselves," says Alcatel-Lucent (ALU +5.5%) CEO Ben Verwaayen, taking responsibility for his company's struggles. Verwaayen suggests Alcatel will try to keep R&D spending high, and focus on reducing cash burn by exiting unprofitable businesses and contracts. He reiterates Alcatel is looking to monetize its valuable patent portfolio, and shoots down speculation of a merger with also-struggling Nokia Siemens (NOK, SI). 10 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, July 30, 2012, 7:12 PM In spite of growing 4G deployments, Infonetics forecasts global mobile capex will be roughly flat from 2012 to 2016. One reason: AT&T and Verizon have been steadily reducing their capex/revenue ratio, even if growth is harmed. Also, European carriers, struggling with macro and debt woes, have become 4G laggards. In the crosshairs, assuming data traffic doesn't force carriers to spend more, are infrastructure vendors such as Ericsson (ERIC), Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), and Nokia Siemens (NOK, SI). 3 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, July 26, 2012, 4:00 AM An initial share sale in Siemens' (SI) Osram lighting unit has been scrapped in favor of a "dividend in kind spinoff," which would allocate Osram shares to existing Siemens shareholders. The spinoff means Osram's public listing will be "more independent of capital market conditions." Shares -3.4% in London. (PR .pdf) Comment! [On the Move]
- Thursday, July 26, 2012, 3:57 AM Siemens (SI) reports FQ3 net income from continuing operations of €1.23B, missing expectations of €1.4B. Sales rose 10% to €19.5B. Company sees heightened difficulty in hitting its profit target of €5.2B-5.4B this year. "The deceleration of the world economy has increased in the past few months. We see growing reluctance among our customers regarding capital expenditures and stronger economic headwinds, especially in our industrial short-cycle business." (PR .pdf) Comment! [Earnings]
- Wednesday, July 18, 2012, 11:21 AM Siemens (SI +0.3%) and consortium partner Bechtel Group win a $300M contract to provide and service equipment for a natural-gas power plant in Texas. The station will have a capacity of 758 MW and provide electricity to 750K homes when it comes on line in 2014. Comment! [Energy]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 1:08 PM European shares are at their lowest valuation relative to the U.S. in 40 years, says BCA Research, which advises not pulling the trigger until a "market riot" finally forces the ECB to become more like the Fed. Ideas: Total (TOT) and Shell (RDS.A) sell at far lower multiples and higher yields than XOM. Sanofi (SNY) and Siemens (SI) - stunningly cheap. 1 Comment [Global & FX, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 12:26 PM Just one unconditional order was made for offshore wind turbines in H1, three less than the same period in 2011. The financial crisis has curbed lending, while delays in connecting existing farms to the grid have prompted utilities to hold off on new projects. Those losing out include Siemens (SI), which has suffered writedowns on offshore projects, and GE. 2 Comments [Energy]
