- Tuesday, June 18, 10:55 AM Reuters backs up the WSJ in reporting Siemens (SI +0.8%) is talking to P-E firms TPG, KKR, and Blackstone about selling its 50% stake in Nokia Siemens; the news service adds past attempts to sell to P-E firms have failed due to price disagreements. Meanwhile, Goldman is assigning NSN a value of €6B, based on a valuation of 6x 2014E EV/EBITDA. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, June 14, 9:54 AM Nokia (NOK +4.2%) rallies after the WSJ reports Siemens (SI -0.5%) is talking to P-E firms, including TPG, KKR, and Blackstone, to "gauge their interest" in buying its 50% stake in Nokia Siemens, and that Nokia itself is thinking of buying Siemens out (possibly with the help of Finnish sovereign wealth fund Solidium). Analysts have pegged the value of NSN, which has turned profitable following a huge restructuring, at above €7B ($9.4B) after factoring debt. Bloomberg reported in February Nokia and Siemens had "intensified talks" to end Siemens' involvement in NSN. 33 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Tuesday, May 7, 10:54 AM Dresser-Rand (DRC +3.8%) is turning into a takeover target for potential buyers such as Siemens (SI), National Oilwell Varco (NOV) and Cameron (CAM), Bloomberg writes. GE’s decision to buy Lufkin this year at the highest multiple to profit on record signaled an appetite for takeovers in the oilfield equipment industry, and DRC could be next on the list as the number of takeout candidates in the space diminishes. 1 Comment [Energy, M&A, On the Move]

Siemens' (SI) FQ2 net income from continuing operations of €982M (+0.4% Y/Y) misses estimates . Revenue falls 6.7%, coming in at €18B. The company cuts its full year guidance, saying net income will be in the low end of its range (€4.5-5B) — a weak economic environment and charges associated with ill-fated solar and wind projects were cited as reasons for the lowered profit projections.
Comment! [Earnings] - Wednesday, April 17, 8:37 AM Eli Lilly (LLY) agrees to acquire two imaging agents from Siemens (SI) that are designed to show brain deposits of tau, a protein that's linked with Alzheimer's disease and cell death. The acquisition of the agents, which are radiopharmaceutical tracers used with PET scans, add to Eli's Amyvid tracer that can detect beta amyloid, another protein linked with Alzheimer's. Financial details of the deal weren't disclosed. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare, M&A]
- Thursday, April 11, 10:10 AM Siemens (SI) intends to axe 3,000 out of over 100,000 positions at its industry division as part of a plan to save €6B company wide and to increase productivity by €1.1B at the division itself by 2014. Meanwhile, China's industrial markets appear to be stabilizing, although expectations for Asian growth are "less enthusiastic" than in the past, while visibility in the U.S. is limited. - Wednesday, April 10, 5:57 AM Siemens (SI) CEO Peter Loescher expects a weak global business cycle to constrain demand for the conglomerate's technology equipment. "Business has not become easier...We still don't expect any tailwind from the global economy and markets," Loescher said. "Many experts expect an upswing in the second half. We have yet to see any signs of that." Comment! [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, April 3, 3:58 AM Nokia (NOK) and Siemens (SI) each have the freedom from today to whatever they want with their 50% stakes in their Nokia Siemens Networks joint venture without the other firm having a veto. Siemens plans to exit NSN this year, although what Nokia will do is more uncertain. At the moment, the once perennial loss-making NSN is Nokia's bright spot and helps mitigate the problems at its handset unit. 9 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 26, 9:58 AM Spending on subsea valves, pipelines and cables to meet the challenges of ferrying oil and natural gas more than 10K feet through the ocean is expected to grow to a record $13.9B this year, a 66% jump over the $8.4B spent in 2012. Subsea development is only "in the middle innings"; FMC Technologies (FTI), Cameron (CAM) and others should enjoy a "powerful wave of orders" for at least the next five years. 2 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, March 18, 5:35 PM With corporate debt yields low and the JV's financial health much improved, Nokia Siemens (NOK, SI) is selling €600M ($779M) worth of bonds in a refinancing effort. NSN had €2.42B in cash/equivalents and €1.13B in debt at the end of 2012, News of the debt offering comes as Bloomberg again reports Nokia and Siemens have stepped up talks about the future of NSN; one scenario involves a joint buyout of Siemens' 50% stake by Nokia and a "strategic partner." (previous) 9 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 7, 5:12 AM Siemens (SI) lighting unit Osram has agreed to sell its traditional lighting production operations in Shaoxing in China in a deal that will cut the firm's headcount by 2,000. The move is part of Osram' plan to reduce staff by 8,000 by the end of 2014 and slash €1B in costs by 2015; it comes ahead of Siemens spinning Osram off. (PR) Comment! [M&A]
- Friday, February 22, 4:50 AM Siemens (SI) could reportedly renew its attempts to sell its hearing-aid unit in H2 as it looks to clean up its portfolio of operations with asset sales. Siemens tried to sell the business, which is valued at around €2B, in 2010, but its declining performance brought down the prices being offered. The sale of the unit could mark Siemens' exit from business-to-consumer activities. Comment! [M&A, Consumer]
- Thursday, February 21, 2:27 PM The French government is thinking of taking a minority stake in Alcatel-Lucent (ALU -5.6%), Bloomberg reports, while adding other options are on the table. The government, which has already taken an active interest in the struggling telecom equipment maker, has also reportedly considered encouraging a merger with Nokia Siemens NOK, SI), and is said to be interested in safeguarding ALU's patents (which the company has been trying to monetize). (previous) 8 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 19, 12:43 PM Nokia Siemens (NOK, SI) CFO Marco Schroeter has left the company, and is being replaced by COO Samih Elhage. Schroeter, who joined NSN in March '11, has overseen a massive restructuring that allowed the telecom equipment maker to return to profitability. His departure comes amidst report Siemens wants out of the JV, and that an IPO is being considered. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 12, 6:08 PM Citigroup is out with another report anticipating U.S. energy independence by 2020, a time when "the bottom of today’s trading range ($90-$120/bbl) is going to be the top of the likely trading range" for crude oil. Among companies Citi mentions as big players and potential beneficiaries: CMI, NUE, ECA, CAT, DE, GE, MMM and SI. 2 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, February 7, 4:30 PM Nokia (NOK -1.2%) and Siemens (SI -0.9%) have "intensified talks" to end Siemens' involvement in their telecom equipment JV, sources tell Bloomberg. One scenario involves a joint buyout of Siemens' 50% stake in Nokia Siemens by Nokia and a "strategic partner" such as Alcatel-Lucent (ALU -6.4%), which is said to have "held exploratory talks" about a deal. Nokia Siemens, which is again profitable following a major restructuring, has been valued at up to €10B. ALU sold off after initially trading higher post-earnings. 15 Comments [Tech, M&A]
