Saturday, April 27, 11:03 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) managed to get 6 chips in the U.S. version of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4, per iFixit's teardown: the high-end APQ8064 app processor, a 4G baseband chip, an audio codec chip, an RF transceiver (beating out SIMO), and 2 power management ICs; the U.K. version uses a Snapdragon 600 baseband/app processor. Also found: a MXIM microcontroller, an SIMG video transmitter, a SWKS 2G power amplifier module, a BRCM NFC chip (likely to go with a combo chip), ATML and SYNA touch controllers, and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) NAND flash (previous). Friday, April 26, 8:47 AM Silicon Motion (SIMO) -8.8% after posting mixed Q1 results (EPS hurt by a 400 bps Q/Q gross margin drop) and light guidance. SIMO expects Q2 revenue to grow 5%-10% Q/Q, well below a consensus for a 24% increase, thanks to soft 4G transceiver demand. For 2013, it expects non-4G transceiver ops to show 0%-10% growth - the consensus for total revenue is 9.8%. SA contributor Ashraf Eassa, bullish on SIMO due to its valuation, thinks Samsung's yield issues for its Exynos 5 Octa CPU have led it to rely more on Qualcomm's (QCOM) solutions (previous) for the Galaxy S4, which in turn has hurt SIMO's transceiver share. Thursday, April 25, 3:14 PM Silicon Motion (SIMO +6.9%) shoots higher ahead of today's Q1 report after SA contributor Valuable Insights argues the chipmaker could deliver a 30%-60% return over the next few months. The author declares SIMO to meet all of his criteria for "the ideal semiconductor long," including bottoming revenue/margins, new product cycles, and an attractive valuation, asserts the company's 4G transceiver business with Samsung remains healthy in spite of recent issues, and notes the ASP for SIMO's NAND flash controllers has risen for 12 straight quarters. Friday, April 12, 12:54 PM Though Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is the world's biggest memory maker and a top LCD maker, the growing needs of its phone/tablet ops are forcing it to turn to 3rd-party suppliers. Digitimes reports Samsung has stepped up its purchases of mobile DRAM chips from Elpida and NAND flash products from Toshiba, and that the electronics giant is also buying 5.8" LCD panels from Taiwanese suppliers for its phablets. The implications for memory/LCD demand and pricing are a positive for rivals MU, SNDK, AUO, and LPL, and perhaps also glassmaker GLW and NAND controller supplier SIMO. 8 Comments [Tech]
Tuesday, February 5, 2:06 PM Down sharply AH yesterday thanks to its Q4 miss and weak Q1 guidance, Silicon Motion (SIMO +2.5%) is now higher. Needham has come to the chipmaker's defense, citing valuations and upcoming catalysts. During the earnings call, management forecast strong 2013 demand for SIMO's eMMC flash memory controllers from the mobile device market, aided by a next-gen part entering mass-production. It also thinks LTE transceiver sales can grow 50%-75% in 2013, as Samsung begins using the chips in phones meant for markets other than Korea. Comment! [Tech]
Monday, February 4, 6:54 PM More on Silicon Motion: The chipmaker expects Q1 revenue to fall 15%-25% Q/Q, worse than a consensus for a 4% drop. 2013 revenue is still expected to grow 10%-20% (consensus is for 13%), but investors appear skeptical. SIMO claims Q4 sales were hurt by "accelerated" Q3 shipments of 4G transceivers to Samsung, and declining retail memory card controller sales.
