- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 4:35 PM Sina (SINA): Q3 EPS of $0.17 beats by $0.06. Revenue of $147.7M (+18% Y/Y) beats by $1.7M. Shares -8.5% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]

- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 10:22 AM Baidu (BIDU -4.1%) falls in response to the Q4 guidance and earnings call commentary accompanying its Q3 beat. The fact Citi is downgrading shares all the way to Sell from Buy also isn't helping - the firm's target has been cut in half to $95. Piper's Gene Munster is taking comfort in better-than-expected customer ads, and argues Qihoo (QIHU +0.6%), the subject of much recent angst, isn't a major long-term threat. Also lower: SINA -1.8%. SOHU -1.4%. RENN -2.6%. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 9:55 AM Even with a big upcoming lockup expiration, Facebook (FB +21.6%) shorts are rushing to cover following a Q3 beat fueled by growing mobile ad sales, and an upbeat earnings call (I, II) focused on rising monetization. Social networking and mobile ad peers are joining in on the fun: LNKD +5.4%. RENN +4.9%. SINA +2.2% MM +10.7%. VELT +5.4%. Zynga (ZNGA +0.5%) is largely being left out after Facebook noted its Payments revenue share is quickly declining. Zynga announced layoffs yesterday and reports this afternoon. - Friday, October 19, 2012, 10:45 AM Sina (SINA) gives its very popular Weibo microblogging platform a major redesign: new features include Facebook-like banner photos and the ability to restrict the sharing of a post to a select group of users (similar to Google+'s Circles). Weibo is closing in on 400M registered accounts (inlcuding duplicates), but monetization is still a work-in-progress. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, August 31, 2012, 12:36 PM Sina (SINA -1.8%) trades lower after announcing chairman Yan Wang has resigned, and will be replaced by CEO Charles Chao. Wang, who has been Sina's chairman since he resigned as CEO in May '06, will remain a board member. (PR) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 5:25 PM Just 3 years after launching, Sina's (SINA) Weibo microblogging platform has 368M registered accounts (doubtlessly including some fake/duplicate ones). But (like some other social networks) concerns about monetization persist. Though Weibo's expenses have soared, its Q2 ad sales only totaled $10M, or about 10% of Sina's total Q2 ad revenue. Sina is counting on new services such as Weibo Games and a paid membership tier to improve monetization. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, August 16, 2012, 12:54 PM Sina (SINA +11%) has received both an upgrade to Buy from BofA, and a downgrade to Hold from Jefferies, after beating Q2 EPS estimates thanks to improving margins and slowing opex growth. Jefferies doesn't like the fact Sina's portal ad revenue grew only 1.5% Y/Y, thanks to macro conditions and share losses, and that Weibo enterprise account adds are missing targets. Also cautious is Goldman, which is worried Weibo ad sales are cannibalizing portal revenue. But with Sina well off its highs, bulls have the upper hand. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]

Premarket gainers: BTH +23%. VQ +17%. EA +10%. SINA +8%. CSTR +8%. OCZ +8%. CSCO +7%. SQNM +6%. PETM +6%.
Losers: IDIX -39%. MCP -8%. NTES -8%. A -7%. DLTR -6%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Wednesday, August 15, 2012, 6:25 PM More on Sina's Q2: Gross margin was 53%, down from 57% in the year-ago period but up from 46% in Q1, and partly responsible for the EPS beat. Also, operating expenses, which have been ramping due to Weibo investments, only rose 17% Y/Y, a slowdown from recent quarters. Sales/marketing expenses actually declined. Ad revenue +12% Y/Y, an improvement from Q1's 9%. SINA +5.5% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Wednesday, August 15, 2012, 5:35 PM Sina (SINA): Q2 EPS of $0.05 beats by $0.07. Revenue of $126.9M (+11% Y/Y) misses by $0.4M. Expects Q3 revenue of $145M-$148M, in-line with $147.3M consensus. Shares +3% AH. (PR) 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

- Monday, August 6, 2012, 1:22 PM Chinese Internet stocks surge in response to pleasing Q2 reports (I, II, III) from Youku (YOKU +7.6%), Sohu (SOHU +17%), and Changyou (CYOU +16.6%). BIDU +4.3%. SINA +9.7%. RENN +11.4%. PWRD +6.7%. TUDO +8%. Baidu's gains are coming in spite of the company's disclosure that 3 employees were arrested for taking bribes to delete message board posts. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, July 30, 2012, 1:22 PM Chinese Internet giants Baidu (BIDU) and Sina (SINA) are reportedly forming a broad partnership that will cover "search, content, platforms, technology, and resources." Details as to what this means remain scant - Sina has already built Baidu search into its Weibo microblogging platform, and Baidu has added Weibo publishing support for its cloud services and.Box Computing platform Stronger integration of Weibo posts within Baidu's search results is a possibility. Comment! [Tech]

Really? SINA, which reports after the bell on Tuesday, is expected to only make -0.23 vs. 0.25 a year ago. It even made 0.21 last quarter. - View all 11 replies
-
Michael Bryant: Yes, but the earnings difference was so great, I figured risks were low. And the market probably expected BIDU to do well. -
