- Monday, July 30, 2012, 1:22 PM Chinese Internet giants Baidu (BIDU) and Sina (SINA) are reportedly forming a broad partnership that will cover "search, content, platforms, technology, and resources." Details as to what this means remain scant - Sina has already built Baidu search into its Weibo microblogging platform, and Baidu has added Weibo publishing support for its cloud services and.Box Computing platform Stronger integration of Weibo posts within Baidu's search results is a possibility. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 12:29 PM Beaten down on macro and mobile worries, Baidu (BIDU +10%) is rallying strongly after its Q2 report and Q3 guidance made it clear that the Chinese search giant's growth remains quite healthy for now. Barclays (Overweight) sees the report, which featured a major increase in ad revenue/customer, as evidence of the untapped opportunity presented by Chinese SMEs. Multiple analysts note the strength of Baidu's display ad sales to third-party sites. SINA +1.7%. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, July 23, 2012, 4:42 PM More on Baidu's Q2: 352K online ad customers, +9.7% Q/Q and +18.1% Y/Y. Revenue/customer was $2,440, +16.5% Q/Q and +34.8% Y/Y. Traffic acquisition costs were 8.3% of revenue, up from 7.8% in Q1 and 7.9% in year-ago period. SG&A expenses +55.6% Y/Y, R&D expenses +82.7%. BIDU +5.5% AH. Up in sympathy: SINA +2.8%. SOHU +2.5%. YOKU +1.7%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 10:44 AM Chinese Internet stocks, many of whom fell yesterday on worries about the Middle Kingdom's growth outlook, are falling harder today. BIDU -4.9%. SINA -7.9%. YOKU -9.1%. TUDO -9%. SOHU -5.4%. RENN -5.8%. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, July 13, 2012, 10:38 AM Sina (SINA) unveils plans to offer an Internet TV service that will be integrated with its Weibo microblogging platform. Sina has been investing heavily in Weibo, which now has over 300M registered accounts, as it tries to keep Tencent (TCEHY.PK) at bay. Sina Weibo's traffic easily outpaces that of Tencent Weibo, but the massive reach of the latter's QQ messaging platform still makes it a potential threat. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 11:35 AM Sina (SINA) has been quite successful building the Chinese version of Twitter. It's now trying its hand at building the Chinese version of Path, a cult smartphone app that allows users to provide a running stream of their daily activity. Sina's product, called Meyou, features tight integration with the Twitter-like Weibo, and indirectly competes with Tencent's (TCEHY.PK) QQ messaging platform. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 4:19 PM Sina (SINA +4%) has launched a CNY10/month ($1.57/month) paid membership service for users of its extremely popular Weibo microblogging platform. The service provides value-added features such as personalized pages and the ability to upload audio posts, and comes amidst close investor scrutiny of how Sina plans to monetize Weibo. Recent ad sales efforts appear to be going well. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 9:29 AM Sina (SINA) +2.2% after receiving upgrades from Oppenheimer and CLSA. The former thinks "near-term headwinds" related to a slowing Chinese economy and Sina's huge Weibo investments have been baked in, and thinks re-accelerating revenue growth, margin improvement, and the start of Weibo monetization will act as positive catalysts. The latter says checks indicate Weibo ads are performing well in spite of a weak Chinese ad market. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 9:49 AM Overlooked in Apple's (AAPL) long list of Mac and iOS announcements yesterday was the company's release of several iOS features aimed specifically at Chinese users. The features include not only the expected addition of Baidu (BIDU) search, but also the integration of Sina's (SINA) Weibo and merging video sites Youku (YOKU) and Tudou (TUDO), as well as Chinese-language support for Siri. Apple's China sales soared 3x Y/Y in the March quarter to $7.9B, and made up 20% of its sales. 9 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 2:22 PM Chinese online game developer/portal NetEase (NTES +5.2%) makes new highs after reporting Q1 revenue of $318.2M (+39% Y/Y) and EPS of $1.14, beating Street estimates by $8.5M and $0.13. Growth was fueled by strong uptake for the company's Ghost and Tianxia III games. In addition, NetEase reported a 24% Q/Q increase for users of its microblogging service to 121M (SINA's Weibo has 300M+), and a 6.7% Q/Q increase in registered e-mail accounts to 480M. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 16, 2012, 9:38 AM Sina (SINA +13.4%), which had fallen sharply since March, is surging following its Q1 beat, even though it was accompanied by soft Q2 revenue guidance and a warning it could see additional losses due to its investments in Weibo, which are expected to grow to $160M in 2012 from $110M-$120M last year. An upgrade from Barclays is helping Sina's cause. BofA (Neutral), though worried about margin pressure, is pleased with Sina's efforts to monetize Weibo. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]

[On the Move] - Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 6:13 PM More on Sina's Q1: With the monetization of Weibo a major concern of investors, the Street is likely pleased with Sina's prediction that Weibo brand advertising, currently in the trial stage, will have a "meaningful impact" on 2H brand advertising revenue. EPS was hurt by a 17% Q/Q and 142% Y/Y increase in R&D expenses to $25M, and a 700 bps Y/Y drop in gross margin to 46%. Both figures have much to do with Sina's huge Weibo investments. SINA +6.9% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 5:10 PM Sina (SINA): Q1 EPS of -$0.21 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $106.2M (+6% Y/Y) beats by $3.6M. Expects Q2 revenue of $126M-$129M, below $130.4M consensus. Shares +6.4% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
