- Friday, January 4, 1:52 PM The FDA is proposing two new food safety rules for foodborne illness prevention. The first rule would require food makers to develop a formal plan for preventing their food products from causing foodborne illness, and for correcting any problems that might arise. The second proposes enforceable, scientific-based safety standards for the production and harvesting of produce on farms. 2 Comments [Consumer, Commodities]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 11:30 AM J.M. Smucker (SJM -0.2%) presented at a RBC Capital investor conference with growth objectives a major focus. The company aims to see organic sales increase 3% to 4% and add another 2% to 3% to its top line through acquisitions. Product innovation hits a higher gear in 2013 with over 100 new items planned across a variety of categories. Of interest to coffee stock investors, J.M. Smucker says the K-Cup segment holds close to 20% of the total at-home coffee market now. For its part, the company expects K-Cup sales of $180M in FY12. (webcast, slides) 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 11:16 AM Heard on J.M. Smucker's (SJM -3.1%) earnings call: 1) Pricing on fruit spreads and coffee lowered due to competition with volume gains are a goal. 2) Marketing spending will pick up in Q4 especially with TV ads 3) Growth rates will rise as lower commodity costs cycle through and K-Cup growth accelerates. 4) On buybacks vs. acquisitions, the company will direct close to half of its cash from operations toward buybacks and dividends. M&A environment called "solid" and a purchase could be seen within 12 to 18 months. 5) For FY13, sees sales up 7% and estimates EPS will fall in a range of $5.12-$5.22. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 7:51 AM A coffee trade-down in play? With Wal-Mart (WMT) and J.M Smucker (SJM) both reporting strong K-Cup sales during Q3, retail analysts see the opening of the single-serve market playing out as expected. Although it's a sticky wicket trying to convince a Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR) or Starbucks (SBUX) fan that consumers will flock to Folgers or Sam's Club coffee products, early results are promising. Keep an eye on pricing in the coffee market, with Caribou Coffee (CBOU) and Treehouse Foods (THS) trying to recover from recent K-Cup stumbles. 12 Comments [Consumer]

- Tuesday, October 9, 2012, 10:33 AM J.M. Smucker (SJM -0.8%) files a statement (8-K) with the SEC indicating it faces a short-term supply crunch of coffee canisters. The company says it's working with a supplier to meet demand and that a material impact on earnings should not be felt. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 7:10 AM A report ordered by Congress formally concludes that the FDA should limit the amount of salt in restaurants and package foods to lower the risk of heart disease. Sources indicate that the report is the jumpstart legislators need in order to initiate a comprehensive phase-down of the use of salt in the $600B food industry. 26 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, August 20, 2012, 10:37 AM Shares of J.M. Smucker (SJM +1.6%) trade higher with Deutsche Bank raising its price target on food company to $91 from $86. The extra $5 on the PT doesn't hurt, but SA author Divideninvestr provides a little more meat on the bone for value investors with the take that the low-volatility dividend-payer provides a nice play for the long-term. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, August 17, 2012, 7:39 AM Coffee watch: J.M. Smucker (SJM) showed a promising 4% increase in its U.S. retail coffee segment in Q2, with Folgers Gourmet Selections and Millstone K-Cups contributing gains. Both Starbucks (SBUX) and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR) compete directly with the company and hope more pressured consumers aren't starting to trade down. 4 Comments [Consumer]
