SLV vs. ETF Alternatives
SLV Description
The objective of the iShares Silver Trust is for the value of the shares of the iShares Silver Trust to reflect, at any given time, the price of silver owned by the iShares Silver Trust at that time, less the iShares Silver Trust's expenses and liabilities.

- Thursday, March 28, 1:06 PM It's absolutely idiotic to own SLV for two reasons, says technician Peter Brandt. First, he believes fans of silver get a far deal better trading the futures, rather than the ETF. Second, the daily chart remains in a strong downtrend, and a break much lower puts long-term support of $25.50 in play. Beyond that, the next major support is $20.75. 20 Comments [Commodities]
- Monday, March 25, 8:20 AM With Cyprus beginning to make its way off the front pages, gold heads lower, sliding $11.25/oz. to $1,595. GLD -0.8%, SLV -0.3% premarket. 6 Comments [Commodities]
- Thursday, March 21, 3:28 PM In the silver market, Commerzbank thinks it's time to see movement befitting an industrial metal and less like the currency metal it has traded in recent weeks. The equivalent of 3,700 tons of silver was sold in the futures market during the past five weeks, or ~40% of 2011's total investment demand; "in the past, we often saw marked counter-movements after such pronounced developments." (earlier) 10 Comments [Commodities]
- Tuesday, March 12, 8:25 AM Gold gets a sniff of $1,600, gaining 1% in minutes to $1,596/oz., with traders noting one buyer taking down 5.7K 1-month gold futures contracts as stoking the move. GLD +1% premarket. Silver comes along for the ride, SLV +1.1%. 10 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 5, 4:41 PM Gundlach: Worrying about how the Fed may unwind its policies is a waste of time, he says. The current Fed boss and the putative successor (Yellen) haven't indicated any interest in an exit. With precious metals bears patting themselves on the back of late, Gundlach thinks it's a good time to buy, preferring silver (SLV) to gold (GLD) thanks to the white metal's higher beta. 7 Comments [U.S. Economy, Commodities, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, February 26, 2:55 PM Comex gold scores its biggest one-day gain of the year, jumping $28.90 (+1.8%) to settle at $1,615.50, as Bernanke’s comments were "music” to the ears of precious metals bulls, Real Assets' Jan Skoyles says, "and strong economic data is just not enough anymore to convince markets that all is well." Silver +0.9% to $29.32. 8 Comments [Commodities]
- Monday, February 25, 12:41 PM Gold gains 1.1% to $1,590 after touching a 7-month low last week amid growing indications of at least short-term capitulation. Another one: Net long positions for the week ended Feb. 19 were slashed by 36% to the lowest level since November 2008, according to Commerzbank, which notes the metal has slid more since the 19th, meaning speculative longs have likely declined even further. GLD +0.6%, SLV +0.9%. 8 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Friday, February 22, 10:51 AM The absence of China last week due to the Lunar New Year celebrations “set the ball rolling and left the silver price at the mercy of the technical picture,” Julian Phillips says, expecting a "snapback just as surprising as the fall" - which has been steep, as silver has shed ~9% this month. Global Hunter's Jeff Wright likes silver more than gold now because of silver’s “industrial utility” and "true expansion” in industrial uses. 1 Comment [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Thursday, February 21, 10:31 AM Warming up to the idea FOMC hawkishness may be getting ahead of itself, precious metals reverse course. Gold's now up $26 from the overnight low, GLD +1%. SLV +0.7%. The dollar, however, continues to strengthen, UUP +0.3%. 7 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 20, 2:19 PM Stocks remain lower following the more hawkish tone from the FOMC, with a benign loss in the Dow masking more substantial drops in the S&P (-0.5%) and the Nasdaq (-0.7%). Gold (GLD -2.2%) and silver (SLV -3%) leg down to new lows for the session. Bond prices fell on the release, but have now turned positive, TLT +0.1%. 3 Comments
- Wednesday, February 20, 11:41 AM The long-cycle in precious metals has peaked, writes Citi's Jon Bergtheil, arguing we'd need a level of systemic risk higher than the past few years to warrant a continued bull run. Especially vulnerable are the PM miners (GDX, SIL) which benefit from what may be mistaken belief $35 silver and $1,600 gold are the "new normal." 21 Comments [Commodities]
- Wednesday, February 20, 11:28 AM Non-agricultural commodities sell off sharply across the board. GLD -1.4%, SLV -2.3%, USO -2%, JJC -1.1%. Lumber futures -2.5%. Chatter circulates of a troubled hedge fund being forced to exit. Broad commodity ETF: DBC -0.9%. 10 Comments [Commodities]
- Monday, February 11, 9:31 AM Precious metals go into the tank on chatter the G-7 is set to issue a statement in which all will pledge to get along with regards to currency devaluation. The G-20 meets in Moscow at week's end. GLD -1.2%, SLV -1.5%. 37 Comments [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Friday, February 8, 8:18 AM The CME cuts the initial margin for gold (GLD) to $5,940 from $6,600 and silver (SLV) to $10,450 from $12,100. Maintenance margins are cut by a similar ratio for both metals as well. 18 Comments [Commodities]
- Thursday, February 7, 9:30 AM Dealing a blow to precious metals, the Chicago Fed's Charles Evans - as dovish as they come - tells CNBC QE could end before unemployment sinks to 7%. As for the 6.5% unemployment rate that might trigger rate hikes, Evans doesn't see that happening until mid-2015. GLD -0.7%, SLV -1.5% premarket. The dollar gets a bid as well, UUP +0.4% premarket. 21 Comments [Commodities, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Friday, January 18, 1:00 PM Silver's big move in the past few sessions helped draw more than $600M into the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) over the last week. It's 6% of AUM, the leader among all ETFs for creation activity during this period. 5 Comments [Commodities]
