- Wednesday, June 19, 10:31 AM Sony (SNE -2.9%) will not directly address Third Point's call for the company to spin off its entertainment business during its annual meeting tomorrow, according to sources. Loeb won't be in attendance, but the wide-open nature of annual meetings in Japan will give other shareholders plenty of chances to try to force Sony executives to make a statement on the proposal. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, June 18, 12:07 PM T-Mobile USA (TMUS) will be the exclusive U.S. seller of Sony's (SNE +2.8%) Xperia Z Android phone, which has posted strong international sales taken a big chunk of the high-end Japanese smartphone market. Together with a recent exclusive for Nokia's Lumia 925, the deal suggests T-Mobile is having more luck with smartphone OEMs following the MetroPCS merger. Also: Canaccord has launched coverage on T-Mobile with a Hold and $22 PT. The firm views T-Mobile as an attractive M&A target for the company that fails to acquire Sprint/Clearwire, but considers shares fully valued. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 18, 1:55 AM Sony (SNE) repeats that it will review Daniel Loeb's proposal that the company float its entertainment business after Loeb's Third Point hedge fund increased its stake in the electronics firm to 7% from 6.5%. In the past, Sony has said that its film and device units are better together - CEO Kazuo Hirai believes they have valuable synergies - and that it would consider Loeb's spin-off idea. Comment! [Tech, Top Stories, Consumer]
- Monday, June 17, 11:28 PM Dan Loeb's Third Point raises its stake in Sony (SNE) to 7% from 6.5% according to a letter (text) sent to SNE's board. "Shareholders should not have to wait any longer," Loeb says, "the company’s most valuable untapped synergies lie within entertainment itself." 1 Comment [Tech, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Monday, June 17, 2:39 PM Out with the old. The Netflix-DreamWorks Animation deal signals an important change in the way content is distributed, according to industry watchers The most important part of the deal is that it focus on exclusive fresh content for Netflix (NFLX +6.8%) from DreamWorks (DWA +4%) - instead of just filling up a library with older titles. The big picture: A bidding war for new films from Hollywood studios (LGF, SNE, VIA, CMCSA, DIS) could help the industry maximize profits. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg called it (I, II) last week when they predicted giant upheaval for the film industry. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, June 14, 3:23 PM CEO Kazuo Hirai says Sony's (SNE -5.2%) film and device units are better together. (Nikkei) 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, June 14, 1:09 PM Apple (AAPL -1.3%) roundup: 1) Digitimes reports Pegatron will start low-cost iPhone and next-gen (retina?) iPad Mini shipments in August. The WSJ recently reported Pegatron had taken iOrders from Foxconn, and the Commrcial Times just reported parts shipments for a cheaper iPhone are underway. 2) Horace Dediu estimates Apple has been adding an average of 500K iTunes accounts/day (180M+/year) since '09, and puts Apple's annual revenue/account at ~$300 (down from $400+ in 2010). 3) Apple's Japanese smartphone share has fallen to 25% from 40% over the last 4 weeks, per local research firm BCN. Sony's (SNE) share is believed to have more than doubled to 36%, thanks in part to the Xperia Z. IDC gave Apple a 40% share for Q1 as well. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, June 13, 3:39 PM The glass half full: George Lucas and Steven Spielberg weren't sounding the death knell for the movie industry when they warned of an implosion but a paradigm shift away from multiplex theaters (CKEC, CNK, IMAX, RGC). When the day comes when mega-budget films from top studios (CMCSA, DIS, TWX, LGF, SNE, DWA) bomb at the box office, look for new mediums at home to emerge as first-run options. "There has never been more exciting potential," notes Spielberg. (video) 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 12, 6:46 AM Sony (SNE) boosted its sales estimates for the PlayStation 4 with early signs that demand will be strong. Though not quantifying the forecast for PlayStation 4, execs say their biggest worry is making sure supply meets demand. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Monday, June 10, 11:27 PM The PlayStation 4 will cost $399, $100 less than the Xbox One, and go on sale "this holiday season," Sony (SNE) discloses at E3. Between the lower price and the PS4's lack of used game restrictions and online requirements, Sony is trying hard to woo gamers on edge over the One (MSFT). However, Sony is joining Microsoft in requiring a subscription to a premium service (PlayStation Plus) to access multiplayer gaming. 140+ PS4 games are said to be in development. The Gaikai cloud gaming service, which enables access to PS3 titles, will arrive on the PS3/PS4 in 2014. Anticipated first-person shooter Destiny, to be published by Activision (ATVI), has been previewed. (PS4 hardware/titles) (live blog) 13 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, June 10, 10:41 PM Sony (SNE) finally shows off the PlayStation 4's hardware - the form factor resembles the PS3's, but might be larger. Gizmodo: "...it looks like an evil Wii, or a more genteel 2001: A Space Odyssey monolith." Sony has also used its E3 conference event to: 1) Show off a slew of PS4 games, including action title The Order: 1886, several indie titles, and two games for the Final Fantasy franchise (I, II). 2) Officially join the Web programming craze, promising the PS4 launch will be accompanied by original, Sony-created content for the PlayStation Network. Microsoft is hatching similar plans. 3) Promise that, unlike the Xbox One, he PS4 has no used game restrictions or online verification requirements. (previous) (live blog) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, June 10, 4:47 AM Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE) are set to provide more details today about their new flagship gaming consoles at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, which is taking place in LA. While Sony is trying to attract hard-core and casual gamers to its PlayStation 4, Microsoft is positioning its Xbox One at the center of the living room. E3 comes in the midst of a slump in the gaming industry, with some of the new and cool kids on the block - the creators of hit smartphone games - giving the expo a miss. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Friday, June 7, 10:24 AM Apple (AAPL -0.5%) has struck an iRadio licensing deal with Sony Music (SNE +2%), AllThingsD reports. That gives Apple deals with all three top music labels. Though Apple still needs deals with Sony and Universal's music publishing arms, having all three labels signed should pave the way for a launch at WWDC next week. Shares are underperforming following Citi's downbeat note, and reports Samsung has cut Galaxy S4 orders (with a demand shift towards cheaper phones being a possible culprit).(previous) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 5, 9:08 PM Japanese stocks opened lower again today after U.S. equities took a big hit and the dollar struggled to stay above ¥99. The Nikkei Average lost 0.5%, on the back of Wednesday's 3.8% plunge, with exporters leading: Sony (SNE -3.8%), Hino Motors (HINOY.PK -3%). 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, June 5, 8:31 AM Sony (SNE) plans to open up its e-book service in Japan to other devices. The company will reportedly sell e-books for Apple devices during the second half of the fiscal year in the nation. SNE -2.9% premarket amid a tough market day in Japan. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Monday, June 3, 3:05 AM Apple (AAPL) roundup: 1) Apple is due to go to court today over allegations that it conspired with five publishers to raise e-book prices. Apple is facing the suit alone after the publishers involved settled with the Justice Department. 2) Apple reportedly signed a licensing deal with Warner Music over the weekend as it looks to launch a music-streaming service at its developer conference next week. Apple still needs to finalize agreements with Universal Music and Sony (SNE). 3) Google (GOOG) is set to seize Apple's crown for mobile apps in the next few months. While Apple downloads tops those of Android by 50B to 48B, the monthly rate is 2.5B vs 2B in Android's favor. 5 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories]

Philip Saglimbeni: I'm just saying that the approach will come at a cost to the core gaming audience, will affect sales and even make some users switch to PS4 -
domi1kenobi: what about the price of the games? If they cost way less than the ones from Sony they also have a winner.. And this model allows them to.
