- Monday, December 17, 2012, 2:31 PM Talisman Energy (TLM +0.6%) completes a previously announced $1.5B deal with Sinopec (SNP -1.3%) for a 49% interest in the Canadian producer’s North Sea business. There was no serious opposition to the partnership, but it's the latest example of the growing cooperation between Canada and China in oil and gas development. 1 Comment [Energy, M&A, Global & FX]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 12:29 PM A Cnooc (CEO) takeover of Nexen (NXY) would give it the largest stake in the Buzzard oil field in the North Sea that "has increasingly influenced" global oil prices, according to a memo sent to Canada PM Stephen Harper. China's government also would own a 16% share of Syncrude, Canada’s biggest oil sands project in production, with Sinopec (SNP) owning 9% and CEO acquiring NXY’s 7%. Comment! [Energy, M&A, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 4:46 PM China's Sinopec (SNP) has signed a preliminary deal to buy stakes in Nigerian onshore oil blocks from Total (TOT) worth ~$2.4B, Bloomberg reports. The French group said in September it planned to sell assets worth $15B-$20B in the period up to 2014 to raise cash for oil and gas projects. 1 Comment [Energy, M&A, Global & FX]
- Monday, October 15, 2012, 8:25 AM With regulatory hurdles too high, state-owned Sinopec (SNP) and ENN Energy (XNGSF.PK) drop their $2.2B hostile bid for home-country natgas operator China Gas (CGHOF.PK). All's not lost, though, as China Gas goes for a strategic co-op agreement letting Sinopec sell gas directly to Chinese homes, and allowing for future share buys. (previously) Comment! [Energy, M&A]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 3:57 AM ConocoPhillips (COP) and Origin Energy (OGFGF.PK) are looking to sell a $3B 15% stake in their $20B LNG project in Queensland in Australia. Origin said in July that it intends to reduce its holding to 30% from 37.5%, with Bloomberg reporting that ConocoPhillips is now set to do the same. Meanwhile, Sinopec (SNP) is paying $2.1B to raise its stake to 25% from 15%. 2 Comments [Energy, M&A]
- Monday, August 6, 2012, 12:42 PM Sinopec (SNP +3.2%) and ENN Energy (XNGSF.PK) extend their $2.2B bid for China Gas by another month, as they seek regulatory approvals to proceed with Hong Kong's first unsolicited takeover attempt. But it may turn out that the government is waiting for a higher offer, and those pesky regulations might just fade away. Comment! [Energy, M&A, On the Move]
- Monday, July 23, 2012, 10:53 AM Talisman's (TLM +6.4%) sale of 49% of its British North Sea business to Sinopec (SNP -1.9%) for $1.5B brings the proceeds from divestitures this year to $2.5B, and will enable Talisman to finance growth areas in its portfolio as well as to strengthen its balance sheet in the face of low natural gas prices in North America. Still, Talisman will also use $500M to repurchase stock. 1 Comment [Energy, M&A]
- Monday, July 23, 2012, 8:00 AM Sinopec (SNP) agrees to acquire 49% of Talisman Energy's (TLM) U.K. unit for $1.5B. TLM's shares +6.2%. (Bloomberg, via twitter.) Comment! [M&A, Breaking News, On the Move, Energy]
- Thursday, June 28, 2012, 8:26 AM The $2.15B bid for China Gas Holdings (CGHOF.PK) by Sinopec (SNP) and ENN Energy Holdings (XNGSF.PK) is dealt a blow when a major China Gas shareholder raised its stake at a higher share price. Sinopec and ENN are offering HK$3.50/share, a price China Gas has said fails to reflect the company's fundamental value. Comment! [Energy, M&A]
- Sunday, December 18, 2011, 6:33 PM Exxon (XOM) has reportedly approached Gulf Keystone Petroleum (GUKYF.PK) about a purchase that could value the company at about £7B, nearly 5X its current market cap, according the The Independent. Gulf is sitting on a huge crude discovery in Kurdistan, but the government is thought to want an oil giant involved to develop the field. Other majors - including Chevron (CVX) and Sinopec (SNP) - may have interest as well. 10 Comments [M&A, Global & FX, Energy, Commodities]
- Friday, December 16, 2011, 3:12 AM CNOOC (CEO) and Sinopec (SNP) are reportedly competing to buy a 30% stake in Texas-based shale-gas firm Frac Tech Holdings in a deal that could be worth ~$2B. State-owned Saudi Aramco is also said to be bidding. Comment! [M&A, Energy]
- Thursday, December 15, 2011, 3:00 AM Sinopec (SNP) says it's "not the time" to talk about raising its joint $2B bid with ENN Energy (XNGSF.PK) for China Gas (CGHOF.PK), even though China Gas rejected the offer yesterday for failing to reflect the company's fundamental value. Analysts believe the rejection could open the door to a rival bidder, and then Sinopec would be forced to reconsider its price. Comment! [M&A, Energy]
- Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 11:10 AM China Gas (CGHOF.PK) rejects a HK$16.7B ($2.15B) unsolicited joint bid from Sinopec (SNP) and ENN Energy (XNGSF.PK), saying it fails to reflect the fundamental value of the company. Comment! [Energy, M&A]
- Tuesday, December 13, 2011, 9:40 AM Sinopec (SNP) and piped-gas distributor ENN Energy (XNGSF.PK) plan to spend up to HK$16.7B ($2.15B) to buy the outstanding shares in China Gas Holdings (CGHOF.PK), with the deal part of Sinopec's efforts to turn into a global energy giant. China Gas hasn't decided whether it will recommend the bid. Comment! [M&A, Energy]
- Friday, November 11, 2011, 3:07 AM China's hunger to control the resources that fuel its growth shows no signs of abating as China Petrochemical (SNP) agrees to pay $3.54B to buy a 30% stake in the Brazilian unit of Portugal's Galp Energia (GLPEY.PK). Including projected capital spending, Sinopec’s total investment will be about $5.18B. 1 Comment [Energy, M&A]
- Monday, October 10, 2011, 11:31 AM Chinese oil giant Sinopec (SNP -1.9%) declines on an up day for energy stocks following its deal to acquire Canada's Daylight Energy (DAYYF.PK) at a 100%+ premium to Daylight's Friday close. The acquisition still needs to be vetted by Canadian regulators. 2 Comments [Energy, M&A, On the Move]
