- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 8:13 AM An appeals court ruling yesterday that dismissed the conviction of a sales rep who sold a drug for non-FDA approved uses could have major ramifications for pharmaceutical companies, which have paid billions in fines for doing just that. Two out of three judges agreed with Alfred Caronia that his rights to free speech were violated. The government is expected to appeal the case, which could find its way to the Supreme Court. 9 Comments
- Wednesday, November 21, 2012, 4:26 PM Sanofi (SNY) subsidiary Genzyme announces that the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration has approved Aubagio, a treatment for patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. The approval will enable health professionals to prescribe the drug down under, making Australia the second country to gain marketing authorization for the treatment following FDA approval in September. - Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 9:40 AM While multiple-sclerosis patients have waited years for pills to be developed to treat the debilitating disease, doctors are warning them to be wary. That's because drugs such as Novartis' (NVS) Gilenya and Sanofi's (SNY) Aubagio can have significant side-effects. All of which is positive for Teva (TEVA), whose Copaxone is injected rather than taken orally. 4 Comments [Healthcare]

- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 8:20 AM The recent selloff in dividend stocks represents a buying opportunity, says dividend fund manager Judith Saryan. She's expecting an eventual hike in the dividend tax rate, but to levels far below those for ordinary income. For now, she's steering clear of "frothy" utilities (XLU) and consumer staples (XLP), and looking more to dividend "growth" rather than "yield." Top picks: SNY, LYB, WFC, QCOM. Comment! [Quick Ideas]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 10:52 AM Sanofi (SNY -0.6%) and Regeneron (REGN +7.8%) report that the European Medicines Agency's CHMP has recommended granting marketing authorization for Zaltrap Injection for Intravenous Infusion in combination with FOLFIRI chemotherapy in adults with metastatic colorectal cancer. All that remains is for the European Commission to ratify the positive opinion from the CHMP to grant marketing authorization in all 27 E.U. member countries. A decision is expected in Q113. Comment! - Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 6:15 PM Diabetes is running at record levels worldwide, with half of the people estimated to have it not even diagnosed yet, according to the International Diabetes Federation. Poorer countries are where it's spreading most rapidly, with four out of five diabetics now living in low and middle-income countries. Inevitably, the market for diabetes drugs is exploding along with it - now expected to be around $48B - $53B by 2016. 3 Comments [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 3:45 AM A year after Lipitor lost its patent protection, a number companies are making headway on the next generation of medicines for reducing LDL, or "bad cholesterol." Much interest focuses on the cholesterol-regulating gene PCSK9 in the liver, with Amgen (AMGN) (see [[here]]) and Pfizer (PFE) yesterday presenting data showing that their drugs performed well in mid-stage trials. Sanofi (SNY) and partner Regeneron (REGN) announced a massive Phase III trial for their treatment. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, November 1, 2012, 10:10 AM Parents, children and teachers rejoice: Sanofi's (SNY) Sklice lotion appears to be a highly effective weapon in the battle against head lice. In a study, 95% of those who received Sklice just once were free of the parasites the next day vs 31% given a placebo. The Sklice result is much higher better than other treatments. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 7:20 PM Sanofi's (SNY) Genzyme announces the publication of results from its studies of Lemtrada in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, in the November 1 online issue of The Lancet. Results show the drug was significantly more effective at reducing annualized relapse rates than its active competitor Rebif, and more patients on Lemtrada were relapse-free at two years. In addition, accumulation of disability was significantly slowed, and patients experienced actual improvement in disability scores, suggesting a reversal of disability in some patients. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 11:51 AM Sanofi (SNY) presented an overview today of Phase II and Phase III clinical trials for its investigational quadrivalent influenza vaccine, QIV. Three clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate the safety and the immune response to the vaccine, which SNY says is the next evolutionary stage in protecting against influenza B, a significant cause of influenza illness and associated complications across all ages, and especially children. Comment! [Healthcare]

Isis +15% AH. 2 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 6:44 AM Coca-Cola (KO) and Sanofi (SNY) form a 50-50 partnership under which a variety of beauty drinks will be launched in France.
