Irbesartan is the generic equivalent to Sanofi's (SNY) Avapro. The company plans to begin shipping immediately. For the 12 months ending August 31, Avapro and its generic equivalents had total U.S. sales of approximately $390M. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 5:02 AM Bristol-Myers (BMY) is returning its share of global rights to blood thinner Plavix and blood pressure treatment Avalide to Sanofi (SNY) following the loss of patent protection for the drugs, although the American firm will retain U.S. and Puerto Rico rights to Plavix. BMY will receive royalties until 2018 and then a $200M terminal payment, although it's paying $80M to Sanofi over supply disruption to Avalide in the U.S. in 2011. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 3:11 PM Sanofi (SNY) acquires Columbian pharmaceuticals manufacturer Genfar S.A. for an undisclosed sum. Genfar is the second largest generic company in sales and leader in units in Colombia and has a commercial presence in Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador and ten other countries in Latin America. In 2011, its total sales were $133M, with 30% its receipts generated outside Colombia. The deal is expected to close in Q113. Comment! [Global & FX, Healthcare, M&A]
- Friday, September 28, 2012, 4:39 PM Sanofi (SNY) is initiating a voluntary recall of some lots of its Typhim Vi vaccine, saying they may be at risk for lower antigen content. The FDA notes, "There is no safety concern related to this action." Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, September 20, 2012, 6:05 AM Ten major pharmaceutical firms, including AstraZeneca (AZN), Eli Lilly (LLY), GSK, J&J (JNJ) and Pfizer (PFE), have formed a non-profit organization called TransCelerate BioPharma to cooperate on research as they look to speed up drug development. TransCelerate will start by making clinical trials more efficient, including standardizing the way data is recorded to make it easier for regulators. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, September 13, 2012, 11:23 AM The FDA issues a warning that some consumers have reported receiving serious skin injuries while using certain over-the-counter mild muscle and joint pain relievers containing the active ingredients menthol, methyl salicylate and capsaicin. 43 reported cases of burns have been reported, with the injuries ranging from mild to severe chemical burns. Some of the products named include Sanofi's (SNY -0.1%) Icy Hot and Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ +0.7%) Bengay, among others. 2 Comments [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 7:18 PM Sanofi (SNY) wins U.S. FDA approval for Aubagio, a pill designed to treat multiple sclerosis, making it the second oral therapy that will be available on the U.S. market. The drug will compete with Novartis' (NVS) Gilenya, an oral pill which was approved by the FDA in 2010. 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, September 4, 2012, 9:39 AM Impax Laboratories (IPXL) settles a lawsuit with Sanofi (SNY) unit Genzyme over two kidney disease drugs, with the latter agreeing to grant Impax a license to sell generic versions of Renvela and Renagel by mid-March 2014 and mid-September 2014 respectively. - Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 9:27 AM Sanofi (SNY) has voluntarily recalled nine lots of Thymoglobulin, its drug for treating kidney rejection in transplant patients, after one of the lots failed a periodic stability test. The FDA says Sanofi, which carried out the recall earlier this month, has not learned of any safety problems connected to the failure. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 9:03 AM The FDA sends Genzyme a "refuse to file" letter in which it asks the Sanofi (SNY) unit to change the presentation of the data in a filing for the firm's Lemtrada treatment for multiple sclerosis so that the application is easier to navigate. The FDA has not requested additional data for further studies for Lemtrada, which could be launched in 2013 if the FDA approves it. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, August 23, 2012, 3:21 PM Regeneron (REGN +3.4%) spikes higher once again today on takeover chatter involving Sanofi (SNY -1%). A spokesperson for the company declined to comment, on any takeover talks, noting that the two companies have a solid working relationship and have stated it would be advantageous to keep the relationship going as it is now, as separate companies. SNY is currently REGN's largest shareholder, with a standstill agreement in place that prevents SNY from acquiring more than 30% of REGN. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
