- Wednesday, May 15, 3:10 PM Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN -3.2%) and Sanofi (SNY -0.7%) have enrolled the first patients for trials of sarilumab, an injection to treat moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis patients who are inadequate responders to either methotrexate or tumor necrosis factor alpha inhibitor therapy. Comment! [Healthcare, Global & FX]
- Monday, May 6, 1:36 PM Merck (MRK -1.3%) gets no love today from the FDA's approval of Liptruxet late Friday, as the stock is likely dragged down with the rest of the big pharma names on the back of a CNBC report that criticizes their earnings so far. The article points to the fact that pharmaceutical companies have seen a 4.7% contraction in earnings, and a 3.2% drop in revenue this quarter. Why? Morningstar's Damien Cover says there are two primary reasons: FX impact, especially from the yen, and intensified generic competition from patent losses. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 2, 5:52 AM Sanofi (SNY) Q1 business net income falls to €1.61B (-12% Y/Y), or €1.22 per share, missing estimates . Revenue falls to €8.1B, missing by €200M . Results reflect the expiration of patents on Plavix and Eloxatin as well as U.S. generic competition for Avapro. All told, generic competition cost the firm more than half a billion euros in the quarter. The company also appoints two new executive committee members. Comment! [Earnings, Healthcare]
- Wednesday, May 1, 10:36 AM Goldman raises its price target on Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN +3%) to $240 from $230 after a survey of 41 U.S.-based cardiologists/lipidologists shows awareness of anti-PCSK9 drugs is widespread and "physicians project to use this class of drugs in 25-50% of their patients one year after approval." Putting it all together, Goldman hikes its peak sales estimates for REGN727 (developed with Sanofi SNY) to $3.5B from $3B and says it expects the company to report Phase III data in Q3. (Previoulsly: GS reiterates Buy on REGN) Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 25, 9:30 AM Genzyme's (SNY -0.9%) Aubagio once-daily oral drug delayed the onset of multiple sclerosis in a study of patients who have experienced an attack of "clinically isolated syndrome," which is often a prelude to MS. Aubagio is already approved in the U.S., Australia and Argentina for treating relapsing forms of MS. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, April 23, 9:58 AM Sanofi (SNY) +2.5%) and its partner KaloBios Pharmaceuticals (KBIO) +5%) say the FDA has granted fast-track designation for the investigation of KB001A, an antibody fragment intended for protection against bacterial pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in mechanically-ventilated patients. Under the partnership arrangement SNY is responsible for all clinical development, and is currently conducting a Phase I trial of the monoclonal antibody in the U.S. and has started Phase IIb planning. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 2, 3:48 AM Sanofi (SNY) plans to continue expanding in China as it looks to generate double-digit sales growth in the country over the next five years. The French company intends to add four factories to six existing plants in order to boost production of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and consumer health-care and animal-care products. Sanofi is also on the lookout for acquisitions. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, March 27, 1:02 PM The insulin war heats up, as Sanofi (SNY -0.9%) loses a key pitchman to archrival Novo Nordisk (NOVOB.PK). Former professional cyclist Phil Southerland, a diabetic whose team was funded by SNY for the past six years, has jumped ship along with his crew, now calling themselves Team Novo Nordisk. The stakes in this battle are big, as the global diabetes drug market right now runs at around $35B and continues to climb. At present, SNY dominates the market with Lantus, but its patent expires in 2015, and NOVOB - despite recent setbacks - continues to draft close behind. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move, Global & FX]
- Monday, March 25, 4:31 PM Sanofi (SNY -1.4%) says it's signed a collaboration agreement with Transgene SA to create a new industrial platform that will produce immunotherapy products including Transgene's therapeutic products. The platform will be established on Genzyme Polyclonals site, costing around €10M from both partners. The platform will remain Sanofi's exclusive property, and under the agreement, SNY's Genzyme will act as contract manufacturer. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Friday, March 22, 2:51 PM Sanofi's (SNY +1.4%) Genzyme says that the European Medicines Agency has issued a positive opinion for the approval of Aubagio, which is a treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. It did not howvever, recommend the drug receive a new active substance designation, which SNY believes could have a detrimental impact on future research on MS, as well as other diseases. The drug developer is now planning to request a re-examination of the decision. Comment! [Healthcare, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Friday, March 22, 9:39 AM Sanofi (SNY +0.8%) reported positive results for its MS drug Lemtrada late yesterday, saying it remained effective during the first year of an extension study. The data "really speaks to Lemtrada's unique approach to disease modification," says the company's Michael Panzara, speaking at a Neurology conference. An under-the-radar way to play Lemtrada's success is discussed in this SA Pro article. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Monday, March 11, 7:07 AM The DOJ is probing disclosures to the FDA about different responses that patients had to the blood-thinning drug Plavix, which is developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) and Sanofi (SNY). The investigation is looking at how Plavix is less effective in patients who metabolize the drug poorly. State AGs in Mississippi and West Virginia have sued the companies, saying they should have known about the problem since 2003 and that they didn't disclose it in a timely manner. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, February 19, 8:25 AM The FDA accepts Sanofi's (SNY +1.85%) once-daily lixisenatide diabetes drug for review; the company expects to launch the treatment in the EU at the end of Q1 after receiving approval earlier this month. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Sunday, February 17, 8:19 PM SA Pro author Stephen Simpson's bullish take on Sanofi (SNY) touches on the blockbuster potential of the company's MS drug, Lemtrada. A commenter points out Contingent Value Rights on Lemtrada allow investors a pure-play bet on the drug's success. The possible undervaluation of the CVR is covered in an interesting article by SA Pro author Chris DeMuth (along with great comment thread). 1 Comment [Quick Ideas]
- Monday, February 11, 10:15 AM Regeneron (REGN) shares zoom up 8.5% and counting after resuming trading following news that Sanofi (SNY) aims to own up to $500M of stock in the company. The French firm says it could increase its stake in Regeneron "within (the) terms" of their partnership but has no plans to buy a controlling stake. Investors don't seem to be buying that line at the moment. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move, Top Stories, Breaking News]
- Monday, February 11, 10:01 AM More on Sanofi (SNY +2.5%) buying Regeneron (REGN) shares: Sanofi's move follows speculation last year that it was interested in acquiring Regeneron. Sanofi is already Regeneron's largest shareholder, although the companies have a standstill agreement that prevents the French firm from acquiring more than 30% of Regeneron. The companies are also partners in Zaltrap for the treatment of colon cancer. REGN's shares are due to resume trading at 10:05 ET. (PR) 1 Comment [Breaking News, Healthcare, On the Move, Top Stories]
