- Friday, May 10, 6:47 AM Splunk (SPLK) "remains in the very early stages of a fertile growth story" including investing heavily in growth and hiring, which may mitigate its margin potential in the near term, FBR says in a bullish initiation note. "Nevertheless, we believe that from both a secular and product perspective, Splunk is in the right place at the right time and will begin to show positive operating margins on an annual basis with its red-hot growth rates over the coming years." Comment! [Quick Ideas, Tech]
- Tuesday, April 30, 2:20 PM Informatica (INFA -3%), Splunk (SPLK -1.9%), and Qlik (QLIK -3%), 3 names hyped as analytics/big data plays, slump in response to Microstrategy's (MSTR -11.1%) big Q1 miss, which includes a 24% Y/Y drop in produce license revenue. As is its custom, the business intelligence software vendor gives no reason for its miss, nor does it provide guidance or an earnings call. It is, however, happy to note its buyback program ($455M remaining) has been extended to April 2018. Microstrategy's numbers are overshadowing solid results from rival Actuate (BIRT +6.2%); the company posted 16% Y/Y Q1 license rev. growth, compared with nearly flat total rev. growth. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, April 4, 5:31 PM Splunk (SPLK) is set to grow its customer base by 40% this year from the 5,200 it had at the end of FY13 (ended in Jan.), says CEO Godfrey Sullivan. Headcount is expected to grow at a similar rate, as the machine data software later continues to ramp sales and R&D investments. Splunk mentioned on its FQ4 call it added over 400 customers during the quarter, and now has ~200 Fortune 500 companies as clients. Sullivan is banking on the growing use of Splunk's software to analyze Web/mobile data (today, its software is more frequently used to analyze enterprise data) to drive future growth. Comment! [Tech]

After-hours top losers: LNDC -8%. ACMP -4%. EOG -4%. PXD -3%. LOGM -3%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Friday, March 1, 2:12 PM Business intelligence software firms Microstrategy (MSTR +1%), Qlik (QLIK +2.8%), and Actuate (BIRT +5.3%) move higher in the wake of machine data analytics leader Splunk's (SPLK +6.2%) FQ4 beat and strong Q1 guidance. Splunk, now close to its post-IPO highs, boasted on its earnings call of adding 400+ customers in FQ4, up from 350+ in FQ3. $100K+ orders totaled 171, up from 125 in FQ3, and included a $20M deal. Management talked up the potential of the security compliance market (25%-30% of bookings), and said it now has 160 customers on its Storm cloud platform. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 28, 5:03 PM Tech guidance roundup: 1) OmniVision (OVTI - earnings) expects FQ4 revenue of $300M-$330M and EPS of $0.14-$0.29, below a consensus of $371.4M and $0.32. 2) Youku (YOKU - earnings) expects Q1 revenue of RMB480M-RMB520M ($77.2M-$83.6M), below a consensus of RMB551.3M ($88.6M). 3) Splunk (SPLK - earnings) expects FQ1 revenue of $52M-$54M, largely above a $52M consensus. FY14 (ends Jan. '14) guidance is for revenue of $260M-$270M vs. a $263.2M consensus. OVTI -9.2% AH. YOKU -16.1%. SPLK +4.8%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

- Thursday, February 14, 5:06 PM Middleware/analytics software provider Tibco (TIBX) +1.6% AH in response to business intelligence software firm Qlik's Q4 beat and strong 2013 guidance. Both companies have been hyped on occassion as big data plays. Other names that could move higher include Qlik rivals Microstrategy (MSTR) and Actuate (BIRT), data warehousing vendors Informatica (INFA) and Teradata (TDC), and machine data software king Splunk (SPLK). Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, January 25, 10:44 AM Informatica's (INFA +10.4%) big Q4 beat (I, II) is stoking a rally in enterprise software stocks. Microsoft's decent Server & Tools performance might also be helping . Business intelligence/analytics firms are among the standouts - SPLK +2.8%. QLIK +7.2%. TIBX +3.8%. TDC +3.9%. MSTR +3.5% - but there are also others. SAP +2.6%. RHT +3.3%. N +2.4%. CTXS +1.7%. On its earnings call, Informatica noted Facebook is a buyer of its new PowerCenter Big Data Edition software, which can handle data integration projects on Hadoop clusters and many other platforms. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 24, 6:14 PM Informatica (INFA) reportedly guides on its Q4 call for Q1 revenue of ~$201M and EPS of $0.29-$0.32. Shares +8.2% AH, paring some of the gains they saw on news of a huge Q4 beat, but still up strongly. Deferred revenue reached $250.8M in Q4, up from $226.9M in Q3 and $214.6M in Q4 '11. Some other big data/analytics plays, such as SPLK, TIBX, BIRT, QLIK, TDC, and MSTR, could rally tomorrow. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, January 11, 12:47 PM Splunk (SPLK +6.3%) is rallying, apparently on a rumor IBM could bid for the company. As the top vendor in a fast-growing analytics software segment, Splunk is definitely in IBM's wheelhouse. But it also trades at lofty multiples and would probably require a buyout price north of $4B. 18.8% of the float was shorted as of Dec. 14. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday, December 21, 2012, 4:32 PM Splunk (SPLK +0.8%) finished higher after Topeka's Brian White gave it a dose of the enthusiasm he normally reserves for Apple, arguing the machine data-analysis engine behind Splunk's software could make the company "a disruptive force in the IT world." He adds Splunk's ability to uncover insights from huge volumes of unstructured data allow it to encroach on the turf of database, BI, and security software, and that its pricing model allows sales growth to track the growth of analyzed data volumes. (Zack Buckley) 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 11:31 AM Some enterprise software names are rallying in the wake of Oracle's (ORCL +3.4%) FQ2 beat, which was fueled by strong software license sales. VMW +3.7%. WDAY +2.9%. SPLK +2.6%. INFA +2.2%. JIVE +3.5%. Also, Mellanox (MLNX +4.9%) is getting a lift from the strong performance of Oracle's engineered systems business. Oracle noted on its earnings call its app license growth was north of 30%. Goldman estimates total license growth received a 600 bps boost from acquisitions, but is still impressed. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, November 30, 2012, 3:30 PM Splunk (SPLK +1.5%) bounces back from early morning weakness after CEO Godfrey R. Sullivan says his company isn't in any discussions regarding takeovers. Its Q3 report beat targets yesterday, but the results exposed higher costs for the IT data cruncher. Needham still rates the shares a Buy. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
