    UBS is reiterating a Buy on Marvell Technology (MRVL), believing it will profit from growing sales of TD-SCDMA 3G phones for use on China Mobile's (CHL) network. UBS estimates Marvell has a 70% share of baseband chip design wins for TD-SCDMA smartphones. SPRD is another chipmaker with high hopes for the TD-SCDMA market. (previously)

    Spreadtrum (SPRD) is up 8.8% after reporting Q2 revenue of $160.2M (+124% Y/Y) and EPS of $0.65, beating consensus by $4.8M and $0.11. Q3 revenue guidance of $172M-$178M is above a $165.9M consensus. Spreadtrum claims 50% market share for chipsets supporting the TD-SCDMA standard used for China Mobile's (CHL) 3G network.

    Wireless Intelligence sees China reaching 1B wireless subscribers by Q2 2012, with a quarter using 3G phones. Still, China's wireless penetration rate will only be 74%, leaving room for carriers China Mobile (CHL), China Unicom (CHU), and China Telecom (CHA) to grow further. MMI, SPRD, AAPL, and QCOM are some tech names poised to benefit.

    Chinese wireless chipmaker Spreadtrum (SPRD) is acquiring Telegent, a maker of broadcast TV receiver chips for mobile phones. While mobile TV never took off in the U.S., it has gained a following in Japan and South Korea, and might also gain traction in China since it doesn't generate potentially expensive 3G data charges.

    iSuppli estimates China's domestic smartphone shipments will grow from 35.3M units in 2010 to 111.6M units in 2015, driven by declining prices for both phones and 3G services. This presents a major opportunity for Apple (AAPL) and Qualcomm (QCOM), and also for Chinese wireless chipmaker Spreadtrum (SPRD).

    Wedge Partners' Brian Blair thinks Spreadtrum (SPRD) recently won a big order from China Mobile (CHL) for chips supporting phones that can run on China Mobile's TD-SCDMA 3G network. Blair also believes an image cited yesterday by Ticonderoga Securities as evidence of a China Mobile iPhone is a fake.

    Muddy Waters' Carson Block hints he may be wrong on Spreadtrum (SPRD +14%), saying if “we misinterpreted these points as red flags, then the company’s transparency has improved and the stock is going to go up.” Investors may have already figured it out - the stock has jumped 26% over the past two sessions.

    In an open letter to Spreadtrum Communications (SPRD -27.1%), Muddy Waters says it's "identified a number of issues in SPRD's filings," and believes "there is a high risk of material misstatement in the reported financial since the time of Dr. Ping Wu's resignation."
