- Monday, April 15, 6:57 AM S&P 500 (SPY) futures -0.5%, Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) -0.4% as the liquidation in precious metals continues. Other sensitive commodities: WTI crude (USO) -2.5% to $88.76, and copper (JJC) -3.4% to $3.23. 6 Comments [On the Move]
- Friday, April 5, 6:58 AM S&P 500 (SPY) futures slide 0.5% and Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) -0.5% ahead of this mornings non-farm payroll report. Europe is tumbling for a 2nd day, the Stoxx 50 (FEZ) -1.3%, led by Germany (EWG) -1.8%. 1 Comment [On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 27, 6:09 AM Various markets dive after the BOE spells out the continued massive risks to British banks. Half of the £25B that banks must raise this year has been factored into their capital-raising plans. All in all, major banks and building societies face a £50B reduction in their regulatory capital, although HSBC (HBC) doesn't face a shortfall. FTSE 100 -0.1%, S&P futures -0.2%. (PR) 1 Comment [Financials, Top Stories, On the Move, Global & FX]
- Monday, March 25, 5:12 AM Like in Asia, European shares rise, as do U.S. futures, following news of Cyprus's €10B bailout deal, with the EU Stoxx 50 +1.3%, London +0.6%, Paris +1.4%, Frankfurt +1.1%, Milan +0.4% and Madrid +0.8%. S&P futures +0.35%, oil +0.4%, gold -0.1%. 23 Comments [Global & FX, Top Stories, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 21, 11:50 AM Down sharply not long ago, a bit of green creeps into European indexes with a reported plan to shut down Cyprus' Popular Bank and break it up into good and bad banks, as well as the split of Laiki Bank making the rounds. All deposits under €100K would reportedly be guaranteed. Italy (EWI) goes positive, as does the euro (FXE). The Stoxx 50 (FEZ) cuts its loss to 0.6%, the S&P (SPY) now down just 0.3%. Comment! [Global & FX, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 20, 8:13 AM A deal has reportedly been reached for a group of Russian investors to buy one of Cyprus' banks for €4B. If so, it would greatly reduce the country's financing needs. The euro (FXE) moves about 40 pops higher, and European shares (FEZ) add nearly 1% to their gains. SPY at session highs, +0.6% premarket. Update at 8:35: A Cyrpus government spokesman is denying any such deal. 25 Comments [Breaking News, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 19, 12:04 PM Stocks turn decidedly lower as Cyprus' ruling party will apparently abstain from the bailout vote, thus assuring its failure. The ball now moves back to Brussels, where the ECB has threatened to withhold funding from Cyprus' banks if the bailout (and depositor haircut) isn't passed. Stoxx 50 (FEZ) -1.5%, S&P 500 (SPY) -0.5%, the euro (FXE) -0.5%. 41 Comments [Global & FX, On the Move, Top Stories]
- Monday, March 18, 6:11 AM Stock futures slide, but are off the lows following news of Cyprus' proposal for a one-time tax on bank deposits as part of a Troika bailout. Dow -0.5%, S&P -0.8%, Nasdaq -0.95%. 6 Comments [Global & FX, Top Stories, On the Move, U.S. Economy]
- Sunday, March 17, 7:30 PM Crisis on. S&P 500 futures -1% and the euro -1.2% as Brussels "faced with a drowning member state, instead of throwing the Cypriot people a lifebuoy, (throws) a millstone around its neck." EU leaders risk triggering bank runs in Cyprus (and elsewhere?) by going after bank depositors to fund the country's bank bailout. 117 Comments [Global & FX, Top Stories, On the Move]
- Friday, March 8, 8:45 AM SPY adds to gains following the better-than-expected NFP print, now +0.5%. The dollar pops, now +1.6% vs. the yen, +0.7% vs. the euro. UUP +0.6%. The long bond tumbles, falling a full point since the report's release. TLT -1.3%, TBT +2.9%. Homebuilders ETF: XHB +0.7%. Comment! [On the Move]
- Monday, March 4, 6:51 AM Shanghai plunges 3.7% after the government further cranks up property tightening measures, with a gauge of property developers falling 9.3%. "When there are new rules like these, it extends far beyond property shares," says an analyst. Industrial Bank -9.1%. FXI -1.8% premarket. Losses extend to Hong Kong, EWH -0.7% premarket, and the States, SPY -0.5%. 11 Comments [Global & FX, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 3, 6:28 AM Like European shares, U.S. stock futures are suffering a bit after partying hard yesterday following the fiscal cliff deal. Dow -0.15%, S&P -0.3% and Nasdaq -0.1%. Meanwhile, crude is -0.6%, gold -0.4% and silver -0.3%, although copper is +0.2%. Comment! [Top Stories, On the Move, U.S. Economy]
- Thursday, July 5, 2012, 7:12 AM Showing little reaction to the BoE's widely expected additional QE, stock futures move higher on the PBOC's somewhat unexpected rate cut. S&P 500 +0.3%. The aussie gets its tail in the air, +0.3% to $1.0302. Comment! [Global & FX, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 25, 2012, 2:12 PM Stocks stumble just a little following changes to the FOMC's economic forecast which show an upgraded view of the economy and inflation's speed - not the sort of estimates put together by a group fixing to launch additional policy easing. DJIA +0.3%, S&P 500 +1%. 3 Comments [U.S. Economy, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 19, 2012, 10:39 AM Stocks quickly bounce back from a sizable hit following a trio of worse-than-expected economic reports (I, II, III). The DJIA +0.2% after being down 70 and the Nasdaq +0.8%. 4 Comments [On the Move, U.S. Economy]
- Friday, March 23, 2012, 10:14 AM Stocks add to losses following disappointing new home sales (January revised lower as well). Builders certainly can't blame the weather or mortgage rates. Scott Barber points out NAHB optimism isn't yet being confirmed by better data on sales. S&P 500 -0.4%, Nasdaq -0.6%. 4 Comments [On the Move, U.S. Economy]
