Report from Europe: Fear Returns

Considering the slew of lousy US data yesterday with the Chicago Purchasing Managers’ Index falling from 50.0 to 46.1 (denoting contraction), federal data showing foreclosures were up 16% in the second quarter to 2.9% of all mortgages and an ADP jobs number that was 50k worse than expected, the equity market held up remarkably well, even turning positive at one stage. The Dow Jones logged its best single quarter performance in 11 years with Caterpillar (CAT), American Express (AXP) and General Electric (GE) the top three performers.

A quiet start today ahead of the key US Non Farm Payrolls numbers tomorrow which is expected to show the economy losing another 175k jobs. But the ISM Manufacturing number at 15.00 was another ugly print (at 52.6 versus an expected 54.0). I can’t emphasise enough that the two ISM numbers (services and manufacturing) along with the Non Farm Payrolls number are the only three indicators worth getting out of bed for. They MOVE markets and this afternoons disappointment has again sent equities into a mid morning tailspin. We may fail to find the dip buyers as this pattern of economic reports undershooting expectations is becoming worrisome and warrants caution at these lofty levels. Note the VIX (the gauge of fear and risk aversion) is above it 100 day moving average for the 1st time since January. This is not a good sign for stocks.

US stocks closed down a touch last night, perhaps expressing a modest degree of disappointment with the internals of the US dataflow. Whilst initial jobless claims dropped to 545k, it is difficult to read much into this number given the potential impact of the Labour Day holiday. What I can say is that the initial claims numbers remain nowhere near the low 400k levels that would be needed to confidently signify a return to stability in the job market (although the first positive payrolls numbers could well be recorded a little sooner than might be suggested by the claims data). The continuing claims data has adopted a volatile saw-tooth pattern in recent weeks making interpretation equally difficult.

The housing starts and permits report was also open to mixed interpretation. For example, whilst permits rose 2.7% MoM in August, this increase was entirely driven by the volatile multi-unit category – single family starts nudged down 0.2% MoM. Still, residential construction seems likely to make a small positive contribution to GDP growth in Q3. As I’ve noted before, we’re in no hurry to see a rapid rebound in construction activity given the significant levels of inventory that remains on the market. Finally, the headline Philly Fed manufacturing index was certainly flattering. Whilst the business conditions index rose almost 10 points to 14.4, a level last exceeded (temporarily) in June 2007, much of the detail actually looked slightly weaker this month. For example the new orders index nudged down 0.9 points to 3.3 and the employment index was 1.4 points weaker at -14.3.

Studying the Performance of Solar PV Systems

A couple of weeks ago, I noted the importance of examining parameters other than module costs when gauging the economic competitiveness of solar PV energy. I noted how multiple factors influence the levelized cost of energy produced by solar PV systems, and thus its relative cost position on the grid. Nothing new here.

However, besides standard test conditions (STC) conversion efficiency, or nameplate conversion efficiency, public data on parameters other than cost per watt-peak is not always easy to come by. Consensus expectations for the full year were for 1,017 million euros revenue, and so for the company to keep its guidance of one billion euros, it should not be viewed as a surprise.
Much of the hopes for a fast global economic recovery rest on China’s shoulders. The country is certainly doing its part, with its low interest rates and stimulus package that trumps ours in size (relative to GDP). It’s a similar story in the alternative energy arena, where China’s centralized efforts are likely to have a faster and more direct impact than here in the West.

China’s alternative energy efforts are killing two birds with one stone. China’s poor air quality has become notorious in recent years. Alternative energy is much cleaner than coal, which still provides about 80 percent of the country’s electricity. The move toward alternative energy will create a greener tomorrow for this world’s biggest emitter of carbon dioxide. And, of course, much like with the U.S., alternative energy projects are a part of the new stimulus package.

Time to Sell First Solar Alongside the Insiders Who Are Dumping the Stock?

First Solar (FSLR) insiders are selling again. Insiders made a killing selling FSLR stock from $200-300 last year, but this activity came to a screeching halt after August, 2008. With FSLR once again pushing $200 within a much more forgiving stock market, selling season has begun anew with John Walton's estate starting the festivities with a $36M sale on April 30, 2009. In just one week of selling, insiders have cashed in an incredible $2.8 BILLION dollars worth of stock! John Walton's estate has sold 60% of that total. All told, this is an impressive sum for a company with a market cap of $16B.

As always, I sympathize with the sellers. It makes sense to sell into strength, when the demand is robust enough to absorb the large supply, when caution gives way to enthusiasm. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that "Follow-On Stock Deals Hit Two-Year High," so we know that the market is much more willing these days to provide for the various funding needs of publicly traded companies and their insiders. I am guessing that the traders and investors who have boosted FSLR since the 25% post-earnings pop on April 30, 2009 care very little about why these insiders are dumping so much stock, so rapidly.
