- Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 3:58 PM Corning (GLW) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) are forming a new LCD glass JV, this time in China. The companies will spend up to $600M to build a new Gen. 8 glass plant in the city of Wuxi, with production expected to start a the end of 2013. The Chinese LCD TV market has been a pocket of strength in the face of weak global demand, and now accounts for over 20% of industry sales. Demand for 3D TVs has been especially strong. - Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 12:10 PM A German court has issued an EU-wide ban on Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy Tab 7.7 for resembling the iPad, but refuses to do so for the 10.1N. Separately, Apple is demanding $2.5B in damages for Samsung's use of its IP, and future royalties of $31.14/unit to license its design IP and 3 software patents. Critics might point out the iPad's design resembles a photo frame, and that 2 of the software patents cover concepts that predate the iPhone, but that assumes the offer is meant to be taken seriously. - Monday, July 23, 2012, 6:37 PM Surprise, surprise: court-directed mediation talks between Apple (AAPL) and Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) CEOs failed to achieve a resolution to the companies' wide-reaching patent dispute. Among the reported points of contention are differing opinions on the value of Samsung's standards-essential patents. Perhaps a bigger issue is that Apple isn't interested in licensing many of its own patents, and instead wishes to use them as a hammer to wage "thermonuclear war" on Android. - Monday, July 23, 2012, 5:24 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) boasts it has already shipped 10M Galaxy S III phones - GigaOm estimates the figure translates into 190K shipments/day since the flagship device launched, or a run rate of 17.1M/quarter. Analysts estimate Samsung sold 50M smartphones overall in Q2, as it increasingly towers over its Android rivals. BRCM, SWKS, SIMG, and MXIM are among the chipmakers that benefit from Galaxy S III sales. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, July 23, 2012, 1:15 PM Privately-owned patent troll NTP has reached licensing deals with 13 tech and telecom companies: the list includes Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), Sprint (S), Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO), and Samsung (SSNLF.PK). Terms haven't been disclosed; NTP reached a $612.5M settlement with Research In Motion in '06. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, July 23, 2012, 12:26 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) tells an Australian court it cancelled an agreement with Qualcomm (QCOM) not to sue the chipmaker or its customers for using its 3G patents, after Apple (AAPL) filed suit over the Galaxy Tab. Qualcomm's chips are used in 3G and 4G iPad models, as well as the iPhone 4S. Samsung's cancellation may have played a role in Qualcomm's decision to restructure its operations, so as to protect its giant IP licensing business. (previous: I, II) Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, July 20, 2012, 6:06 AM Apple (AAPL) chalked up another legal victory against Samsung (SSNLF.PK) yesterday, when a federal appeals court refused the latter's request for a stay of a preliminary injunction that banned the manufacture and sales of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets in the U.S. while its appeal against the ban is pending. - Thursday, July 19, 2012, 9:05 AM British Judge Colin Birss has ordered Apple (AAPL) to put a notice on its Web site for six months and in U.K. newspapers saying that Samsung (SSNLF.PK) didn't copy the design for the iPad. Birss is the same judge who ruled last week that Samsung couldn't have committed such sins, as its tablet is "not as cool" as the iPad. 13 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, July 18, 2012, 1:06 PM The U.S. launch of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S III is going well, says Raymond James' Tavis McCourt: checks with carrier stores indicate the S III typically sold out 2-4 days after sales began, and that the phone is now the top-selling model at AT&T and Verizon. McCourt thinks RIMM and Samsung's Android rivals have more to lose than AAPL, whom he has a Strong Buy rating on. Analysts estimate Samsung sold 50M smartphones globally in Q2. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 9:21 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is acquiring the mobile phone connectivity and location chip ops of U.K's CSR (CSRE +34.1%) for £200M ($319M). The acquisition covers Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS chips, and is arguably a threat to Samsung supplier Broadcom (BRCM), which has long competed with CSR in these areas. It also provides Samsung with 21 patents that could be useful in its disputes with Apple. The deal comes 6 weeks after Samsung bought Wi-Fi chipmaker Nanoradio. BRCM -1.6%. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Monday, July 16, 2012, 2:41 PM Boosted by strong Galaxy S III sales, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is estimated to have sold 50M smartphones in Q2, according to analysts polled by Reuters. That's easily above the 30.5M iPhones Apple (AAPL) is believed to have sold (ed: many firms have dropped their Q2 estimates below 30M in recent days). Samsung's Android phones often sell at much lower price points than the iPhone, and that has helped them take share from Nokia (NOK) and others in Europe and emerging markets. 24 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, July 16, 2012, 9:42 AM AuthenTec (AUTH +12.2%) jumps after announcing Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is integrating the company's QuickSec VPN software in its Android phones and tablets. Samsung has an increasingly dominant share of the Android smartphone market (particularly on the high-end), and is stepping up its efforts to outfit its phones with the security and device-management features sought by enterprises. - Friday, July 13, 2012, 5:56 PM Many analysts have suggested going long on Apple's supply chain over the years. Barclays, however, thinks now is a good time to bet on Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) supply chain, given the Korean conglomerate's surging smartphone production, and an expected lull in iPhone builds ahead of a fall refresh. BRCM, SWKS, RFMD, and MXIM are mentioned as firms with healthy Samsung exposure, though the first two are also heavily exposed to Apple. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, July 10, 2012, 5:57 AM Intel (INTC) might not be alone in investing in ASML - the Dutch chip-equipment maker has also asked major customers TSMC, the world's top contract chip maker, and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) to co-invest. That could well negate any aim of Intel's to use its interest in ASML to maintain a manufacturing lead over Samsung. 2 Comments [Tech, Top Stories]
- Tuesday, July 10, 2012, 1:06 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) wins a court fight against Apple (AAPL) and gets officially insulted at the same time. U.K. Judge Colin Birss ruled the design of the Galaxy tablets doesn't infringe on the iPad's design, and that consumers are unlikely to confuse the two as the Galaxy tablets "do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design... They are not as cool." 10 Comments [Tech]
