- Wednesday, April 24, 12:33 PM "You can't see the other side of the trade," says Jim Chanos, holding court on CNBC for the hour. Be careful looking at 13Fs, he cautions, as managers cleverly put on positions designed to hedge or even mask their true intentions (he's currently long DE, but short other machinery stocks). "Servers are PCs on a rack," he says, not surprised Blackstone backed off DELL (he remains short, along with HPQ). Apple (AAPL)? He's long both it and Samsung (SSNLF.PK), but reminds it's more of a hedge against his PC shorts. China - along with any company (VALE) dependent on it - is still a short (presentation). 16 Comments
- Thursday, April 18, 6:52 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) will consider using chips from SK Hynix (HXSCF.PK) for future products, according to one of the company's top execs. The move to an outside chip supplier is a reversal of the company's previous policy, but could help prevent supply disruptions for models of its Galaxy X smartphone. Comment! [Tech, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, April 17, 2:23 PM Though Micron (MU -4.4%) and SanDisk (SNDK -4.2%) have joined a general rout in chip stocks and Apple suppliers, a report from Taiwan's Commercial Times indicates DRAM and NAND flash prices continue to trek higher (previous). Contract prices for mainstay 4GB DDR3 PC DRAM modules are said to have risen 8%-10% in early April, and contract prices for 32Gb (4GB) MLC NAND chips reportedly rose 5%-12%. Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is another beneficiary of this trend. SanDisk reports after the close. (Samsung's purchases) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, April 15, 10:52 AM AT&T (T) might be getting Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV a month before Verizon (VZ): a Staples training sheet leaked to Engadget indicates an April 26 launch date for Samsung's new flagship device for AT&T, a May 1 launch date for T-Mobile USA, and a May 30 launch date for Verizon. AT&T will start taking pre-orders for the S IV tomorrow; from all indications, international pre-order activity has been quite strong. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, April 12, 12:54 PM Though Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is the world's biggest memory maker and a top LCD maker, the growing needs of its phone/tablet ops are forcing it to turn to 3rd-party suppliers. Digitimes reports Samsung has stepped up its purchases of mobile DRAM chips from Elpida and NAND flash products from Toshiba, and that the electronics giant is also buying 5.8" LCD panels from Taiwanese suppliers for its phablets. The implications for memory/LCD demand and pricing are a positive for rivals MU, SNDK, AUO, and LPL, and perhaps also glassmaker GLW and NAND controller supplier SIMO. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, April 11, 12:46 PM In case the 5.5" Galaxy Note II isn't big enough for you, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is launching its Galaxy Mega line. As previously reported, 5.8" and 6.3" models are offered. However, the specs appear inferior to those of the flagship 5" Galaxy S IV. Whereas the S IV has a 1080p display, the 5.8" Mega has a 960x540 display, and the 6.3" version appears to have a 720p display (not yet confirmed). The processors and cameras also appear inferior to the S IV's quad and octa-core CPUs (depending on model) and 13MP camera. This could give challengers such as Huawei an opening. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 10, 6:32 PM The sell-side loves Qualcomm (QCOM) these days. The latest proof comes from Sterne Agee, which declares the chipmaker's Snapdragon 600 line to have gained share at multiple OEMs relative to last year's MSM8960 processor, which wasn't exactly a slouch. Sterne also notes reports Qualcomm's chips could go into 70% of Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV units, a major improvement from its S III share, and that Galaxy S IV pre-orders are around 10M. Canaccord touted Qualcomm's strong 4G baseband position yesterday, and Raymond James last week. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 10, 4:54 AM South Korean police have searched the offices of Samsung Display (SSNLF.PK) as part of a probe into the alleged theft of technology. The authorities are looking at whether partners of LG Display (LPL) leaked technology secrets and whether Samsung is involved. The companies have been the subject of investigations since last year. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, April 5, 6:22 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) sold 68M-70M smartphones in Q1, up from an estimated 63M in Q4, according to 5 analysts polled by Reuters. Though the Galaxy S III/IV and Note II receive far more ink, much of this growth is fueled by low-end/mid-range Android models such as the Galaxy Young and Galaxy Fame. These phones, along with Samsung's Rex feature phone line, are adding to the pressure placed on Nokia's (NOK) feature phone ops. Earlier this week, Bernstein reported the S IV's production rate is around 10M units/month. (Samsung Q1 results) 14 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 5, 2:46 PM The mobile patent wars rage on: an ITC administrative law judge rules Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) phones infringe on two more claims of an Apple (AAPL) text-selection patent, while clearing Samsung of infringing a patent related to detecting whether a device is plugged into a microphone jack. In October, the judge ruled Samsung infringed on several Apple patents. A final commission ruling is expected in August. Meanwhile, a German court has invalidated Apple's slide-to-unlock patent, which is being asserted against both Motorola and Samsung. 13 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 5, 2:50 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) projects that its Q1 operating profit jumped 53% to 8.7T won ($7.7B), beating estimates of 8.38T won, while sales rose 15% to 52T vs consensus of 53T. Samsung doesn't provide a break-down by unit, nor a net profit figure. Seoul-based analyst Lee Sei Cheol says, "In addition to the Galaxy S3, mini models sold well in emerging markets, including China, Brazil and India." (PR) Comment! [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories, Earnings]
- Thursday, April 4, 3:10 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) plans to copy Apple - not for the first time, some might say - and set up 1,400 mini stores in Best Buy (BBY) outlets across the U.S. by June. The "Samsung Experience Shops" will not only sell the company's products but also provide customer support. For Best Buy, the move is part of its strategy to fight the phenomenon of showrooming. 4 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 3, 4:02 PM In what's arguably a shot across Google's (GOOG) bow, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is partnering with Mozilla on a new browser engine called Servo. Google is the default search engine for Mozilla Firefox, but at the cost of sizable traffic acquisition payments (something unneeded for Chrome and the stock Android browser). Google is already reportedly concerned Samsung will demand higher search revenue-sharing payments for traffic coming from its Android hardware, but Samsung's dependence on Google apps and services limits its leverage for now. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 3, 12:08 PM The Nexus 7 might be about to get cheaper: in addition to predicting a summer launch for the next-gen 7, a source tells Reuters Google (GOOG) is thinking of either selling the device for $149, or selling it for $199 while discounting the current version (starts at $199). The next-gen 7 is also said to have a thinner bezel (like the iPad Mini) and a higher-res display. The reported pricing could put pressure on Amazon (AMZN), which sells the Kindle Fire HD for $199 and the current Fire for $159. Separately, SamMobile reports Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is working on a new high-end 10" Galaxy Tab, and 5.8" and 6.3" "Galaxy Mega" phablets. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 2, 7:46 AM Television shipments fell 6.3% Y/Y to 238.5M units in 2012, according to a report from IHS iSuppli. The firm isn't overly bullish on the industry with its forecast that TV shipments won't return to 2011 levels until 2015 with the global market saturated. The development means manufacturers may need to discount more to move product. TV blues: Sony (SNE), Panasonic (PC), Sharp (SHCAF.PK), LG, and Samsung (SSNLF.PK). Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Thursday, March 28, 8:40 PM Just 3 chip manufacturers - Intel (INTC), Samsung (SSNLF.PK), and TSMC (TSM) - will account for 57% of 2013 chip industry capex, estimates IC insights. That figure, up from 2012's 54%, drives home the extent chip equipment maker fortunes now hinge on the spending plans of a handful of firms, and also the big lead the industry giants have opened up in economies of scale relative to smaller rivals. IC Insights expects total industry capex to grow 2% this year to $59.8B, after falling 11% last year. 1 Comment [Tech]
