- Thursday, March 28, 12:53 PM AT&T (T) will sell Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV for $250 with a 2-year contract. Pre-orders start on April 16, but no release date has been announced yet. The S IV's price is $50 above that of the 16GB iPhone 5, and drives home Ma Bell's efforts to lower margin-depressing phone subsidies. Verizon (VZ), which has a habit of following AT&T's lead (and vice versa), could follow suit. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, March 22, 10:42 AM Will the next Kindle e-reader have a color display? Bloomberg reports Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is trying to sell its Liquavista e-reader display unit to Amazon (AMZN) for less than $100M. Liquavista, based out of Holland, relies on a technology called electrowetting to create low-power color displays. Yesterday, Digitimes reported Amazon has drastically cut Kindle e-ink panel orders for March/April - IHS sees the e-reader market declining 27% in 2013 to 10.9M units. The Digital Reader reported of Amazon's interest in Liquavista in January. (Qualcomm/Mirasol) Comment! [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
- Tuesday, March 19, 10:59 AM With iWatch rumors barely a month old, Reuters reports Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is working on a "wearable digital device similar to a wristwatch." A source claims the device will perform many smartphone tasks, but doesn't elaborate. Last week, in tandem with the Galaxy S IV launch, Samsung introduced the S Band, a wristband accessory that counts calories and tracks steps. The product bears a strong resemblance to Nike's (NKE) FuelBand. Update: Samsung confirms it's building a smart watch. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, March 18, 6:12 PM The Galaxy S IV shows the contrast between Apple's (AAPL) minimalist approach to smartphones and Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) "maximalist" approach, writes Forbes' Anthony Wing Kosner. Whereas Apple carefully weighs the impact of product changes and lets the iPhone speak for itself, Samsung is constantly making big upgrades while promising its phones will change your life. Kosner thinks Apple's low-key approach resonates better in the U.S., but TechCrunch's John Biggs argues Samsung's approach has its strengths. "[Samsung] figured out that people didn’t care about specs. Instead, they care about use cases." 19 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, March 15, 7:06 PM Following a string of compelling Android phone launches (I, II, III), much of the tech press is underwhelmed by Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV. Gizmodo, deeming the HTC One superior: "There's just no wow-factor here." BGR, not a fan of the plastic body: "Samsung’s latest smartphone feels as if it can be snapped in half." VentureBeat, viewing much of the S IV's software as useless and/or inferior to alternatives, predicts the phone "will mark the beginning of the end of Samsung’s smartphone dominance." Is that a fair assessment, or are Samsung's marketing and R&D skills being underestimated? (more) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, March 15, 10:12 AM Apple (AAPL +1.7%) rallies as the Street takes the launch of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV, which has an impressive spec sheet but has seen mixed early reviews, in stride. Apple's sell-side fans are circling the wagons, with Gene Munster comparing the S IV to an 'S' iPhone launch. Nomura is less sanguine: noting the popularity of bigger displays and stating its checks indicate a bigger iPhone won't arrive in 2013, it thinks Samsung could overtake Apple in high-end smartphone shipments this year on the back of 35M-40M S IV and Note sales per quarter. 34 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, March 15, 4:43 AM China further continues the internationalization of the yuan by setting up three pilot schemes that ease strict cross-border currency regulations for 13 multi-national corporations, including Caterpillar (CAT), Shell (RDS.A), Intel (INTC) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK), which estimates the scheme will save it $10M a year. 5 Comments [Global & FX, Top Stories]
- Friday, March 15, 4:22 AM Three of the first reviews for Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) new Galaxy S IV flagship smartphone range from the mixed to the effusive. The Daily Telegraph describes the device as "evolutionary genius" and the "first of a new generation of smartphones." The WSJ says the S IV has "impressive but less-than-perfect performance," with some of the features not seeming to be "ready for prime time." CNET calls the device an "appealing smartphone," but says it has few "killer" features. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Friday, March 15, 3:39 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has appointed the heads of its consumer electronics and mobile divisions as co-CEOs. Under J.K. Shin, Samsung became the number one provider of mobile phones in the world, while under Boo-Keun Yoon, Samsung's TV business "maintained and solidified its global leadership position." The men will continue to oversee their respective divisions. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, March 14, 8:08 PM More on the Galaxy S IV: Samsung continues doing everything it can to differentiate itself via software, even as the OS and many of its core apps for its hardware are provided by Google (GOOG). The S IV features a text/speech translator (9 languages), the ability to transfer data from any phone witha PC's help, a health-tracking app that can leverage the phone's pedometer and sync with blood pressure monitors, and the ability to control home electronics via infrared. There's also Samsung's eye-tracking and touch-free gesture tech (as rumored). No kitchen sink just yet. (live blog) 25 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 14, 7:36 PM Live from New York, it's the Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV. Mobile chief JK Shin has unveiled Samsung's new flagship device, which happens to look a lot like its predecessor. The S IV, said to support every 4G LTE band, will go on sale in late April (U.S. availability might take longer). The expected 5" 1080p display and 13MP camera are there, the next-gen 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard is supported (could be a positive for BRCM), and infrared, temperature, and humidity sensors are thrown in. A variety of camera tricks/gimmicks are provided, including the ability to simultaneously record video from both cameras. (live blog) (previous) 33 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 14, 11:07 AM A fresh set of leaked images and videos have taken most of the remaining mystery of out of tonight's 7PM ET Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV event. The leaks indicate the S IV will be just 7.7mm thick and weigh 138g (the iPhone 5 is at 7.6mm and 112g), and will support touch-free browser navigation. Samsung is counting on such software features (together with its brand and design skill) to stay ahead of Sony, HTC, and a slew of hungry Chinese rivals who are moving upmarket while continuing to price their hardware aggressively. - Thursday, March 14, 8:17 AM BlackBerry (BBRY +2.7%) plans to offer its Secure Work Space software for Android (GOOG) and Apple's (AAPL) iOS in June, thereby enabling users to split and secure their work and personal data on non-BlackBerry devices. The move comes as corporate and government clients increase their use of iPhones and Android devices, and as Samsung (SSNLF.PK) makes its own play for larger customers who are worried about security. - Thursday, March 14, 4:18 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is due to unveil the Galaxy S IV in New York today following a marketing blitz that analysts fear may have over-hyped the device and set it up to disappoint. Still, sales of 10M units are expected in the first month alone. The company is thought to have worked hard to avoid the supply problems that cost it 2M units of lost sales in just one month last year after it launched the S III in May. 12 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Wednesday, March 13, 11:45 AM Better late than never? Bernstein upgrades its stance on the global DRAM industry to Overweight, and in doing so helps Micron (MU +2.2%) make new 52-week highs. The first signs of improved pricing for PC DRAM arrived about two months ago, when Micron shares were much lower. Production cuts, along with the industry's consolidation around Micron, Samsung (SSNLF.PK), and SK Hynix, have stabilized DRAM prices in spite of still-weak PC demand and slowing growth in the amount of DRAM included in the average PC. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 13, 9:30 AM The U.S. version of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV will use a quad-core Qualcomm (QCOM) processor, while international versions will use Samsung's Exynos Octa, Bloomberg reports. The S IV also said to include eye-tracking tech , but it won't support automatic scrolling (as was previously reported) just yet. Other details about the phone, which will be unveiled tomorrow, are in-line with past reports. Separately, the WSJ observes Samsung spent $401M in 2012 on phone advertising in the U.S. (per Kantar Media), more than Apple's (AAPL) $333M. 4 Comments [Tech]
