- Friday, May 10, 10:58 AM Universal Display (PANL -12.1%) is now tumbling in the wake of its Q1 report and guidance reiteration. Investors may have wanted a guidance hike in light of strong early demand for Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4. Also: materials cost rose by $2M Q/Q, something partly attributed on the earnings call to a mix shift (to green emitters?) and higher materials cost, and (in response to a question about slumping red emitter sales) PANL admitted customers are using materials more efficiently. On the bright side, management noted reports indicate Samsung's Galaxy Note III and an LG phone will feature flexible OLEDs; both are expected in Q4. - Thursday, April 25, 8:28 PM Samsung Electronics (SSNLF.PK) says its Q1 profit rose 42% to a record high on strong smartphone sales. Net profit rose to a record KRW7.15T ($6.4B), up from KRW5.05T a year earlier. Operating profit rose 54% to KRW8.8T from KRW5.7T. Sales rose 16.8% to KRW52.9T from KRW45.3T, coming in in line with the company's guidance of KRW51T to KRW53T. The results stand in stark contrast those of Apple (AAPL), which earlier this week reported its first profit drop in a decade and forecast margins to decline in the current quarter ending in June. 95 Comments [Tech, Earnings, Global & FX]
- Friday, April 5, 2:50 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) projects that its Q1 operating profit jumped 53% to 8.7T won ($7.7B), beating estimates of 8.38T won, while sales rose 15% to 52T vs consensus of 53T. Samsung doesn't provide a break-down by unit, nor a net profit figure. Seoul-based analyst Lee Sei Cheol says, "In addition to the Galaxy S3, mini models sold well in emerging markets, including China, Brazil and India." (PR) Comment! - Friday, January 25, 3:03 AM More on Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Q4: Warns that rising won could cut operating profit by at least 3T won in 2013; capex will be "similar" to the 25T won budgeted for 2012. "The weakening global economic recovery and looming market uncertainties are anticipated to weigh on plans for investment and performance this year," Samsung says. Comment! [Consumer, Tech, Top Stories, Earnings]
- Friday, January 25, 2:58 AM More on Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Q4: Operating profit breakdown : chips +14.8% vs +11.7% in Q3 as sales of DRAM chips for servers and mobile devices outweigh a fall in prices for PC DRAM; LCD +14.3% vs loss last year; consumer electronics +5.3% vs +3.4% in Q3. Shares -2.5% in Seoul. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, Earnings, Top Stories]
- Friday, January 25, 2:46 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Q4 net profit +76% to 7.04T won ($6.6B) vs consensus of 6.8T won. Revenue +18.5% to 56.1T won. Figures largely in line with guidance earlier this month. Revenues mostly driven by "solid sales" of flagship Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 smartphones. Profit at its mobile devices division more than doubles to 5.44T won, accounting for 62% of overall earnings. Expects the global smartphone market to shrink in Q1 from Q4. (PR) 8 Comments [Earnings, Consumer, Top Stories, Tech]
- Thursday, January 24, 12:12 PM SanDisk (SNDK +4.1%) is an Apple supplier and issued light guidance on its earnings call ... yet shares have rallied to within $2 of their 52-week high. Why? Because the guidance - Q1 revenue of $1.225B-$1.3B ($1.37B consensus) and 2013 revenue of $5.3B-$5.6B ($6.01B consensus) - is accompanied by a forecast for just 30%-40% NAND flash industry bit growth, and lower bit growth from SanDisk. That's fueling hopes of a healthier pricing/margin environment - gross margin fell 300 bps Y/Y in Q4 to 39.9%. Needham has upgraded shares to Buy. MU +0.8%. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Monday, January 7, 8:09 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) provides earnings guidance for Q4, saying it likely turned a profit of $8.3B with overall smartphone shipments for the quarter totaling around 63M units - around 500 every minute. Shipments of it's flagship Galaxy S III, which overtook the iPhone 4S in the third quarter to become the world's best-selling smartphone, are likely to have slipped to around 15M from 18M in July-September, but estimated sales of around 8M Galaxy Note II 'phablets', should more than make up for that - pushing the overall smartphone shipments number to around 63M. 2 Comments [Tech, Global & FX, Earnings]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 5:24 PM More on Micron's FQ1: As expected, DRAM sales were weak, -9% Q/Q due to an 11% ASP drop caused by falling PC DRAM prices. NAND flash memory sales fell 4% Q/Q, as a 9% volume decline offset a 5% increase in ASPs. Gross margin was a mere 12%, up from FQ4's 11% but down from the year-ago period's 15%. Free cash flow was -$302M. Cash/investment balance at end of quarter was $2.8B, long-term debt balance was $3.4B. MU -2.8% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Friday, October 26, 2012, 3:51 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) didn't say in its Q3 report, but research firm Strategy Analytics estimates that the Korean firm shipped 56.9M smartphones in Q3, taking its market share to 35.2% and ensuring it kept hold of the sector lead. Apple (AAPL) retained second place with 26.9M handsets, or 16.6% share, while Nokia (NOK) slipped out of the top three for the first time. Total global shipments +35% Y/Y to 162M units. 4 Comments [Tech, Earnings, Consumer]
- Friday, October 26, 2012, 3:39 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK): Q3 net profit +91% to 6.56T won ($6B), third straight quarter of record profit. Sales +26% to 52.2T won. Telecom unit op profit more than doubles to 5.63T won, boosted by sales of Galaxy S III. Chip division -28% to 1.15T won. Company indicates that momentum may stall in Q4, saying it "expects market competition to intensify" and "muted" seasonal demand due to the global economy. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Friday, October 5, 2012, 3:59 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) expects that its Q3 earnings beat forecasts as operating profit jumped 91% to a record 8.1T won ($7.09B) and that sales rose to 51T-53T won from 41.27T won a year earlier. Earnings were boosted by Samsung's mobile phone division, whose profit is likely to have doubled to 5T won as smartphone shipments passed 58M. Sales of high-end TVs were also strong. (PR) Comment! [Top Stories, Earnings, Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, July 27, 2012, 2:35 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK): Q2 net income +48% to a record 5.19T won ($4.5B) vs. consensus of 5.54T won. Sales of 47.6T won vs. consensus of 49.8T won. Sets a 500 won/share interim dividend. Forecasts higher demand for handsets and panels, with growing demand from emerging markets. Shares +5.2% in Korean trading. (PR .pdf) 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Friday, July 6, 2012, 9:39 AM HTC shares fell 5.2% on the Taipei exchange after the hard-luck smartphone maker reported Q2 revenue of $3.04B, down 27% Y/Y. Net profit fell 58% to $248M. HTC, which has been steadily bleeding share to Samsung (SSNLF.PK) and Apple (AAPL), issued a Q2 warning a month ago. (Samsung earnings) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings]
- Friday, July 6, 2012, 2:53 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) estimates that operating profit hit a fresh record of between 6.5T won ($5.7B) and 6.9T won in Q2 vs. 3.75T won a year earlier, while revenue rose to 46T-48T won from 39.44T won. Earnings were boosted by soaring Galaxy sales, although, as one exec says, "that's distorting the overall trading outlook." Samsung's main concerns include Europe. 1 Comment [Earnings, Top Stories, Consumer, Tech]
- Friday, April 27, 2012, 4:01 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK): Q1 net income +81% Y/Y to 5.05T won vs. 4.24T won consensus. Surging sales of Galaxy smartphones helped mask slumping earnings at the chip business. Operating profit at the mobile business was 4.27T won vs. 4.01T won consensus. Comment! [Earnings, Tech]

mcclux: APPL made up the previous market consensus for iPhone sales in the first 3 days that the 4S was on sale, so I think the answer is no.
