- Monday, May 13, 1:43 PM Amazon (AMZN) has bought Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Liquavista e-reader display unit, The Digital Reader uncovers via Dutch regulatory filings; Amazon has subsequently confirmed the purchase. Past rumors indicated Samsung was trying to sell Liquavista, which was developing low-power color displays relying on a process called electrowetting, to Amazon for less than $100M. Look for Liquavista's tech to appear in future Kindle e-readers. 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
- Friday, March 22, 10:42 AM Will the next Kindle e-reader have a color display? Bloomberg reports Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is trying to sell its Liquavista e-reader display unit to Amazon (AMZN) for less than $100M. Liquavista, based out of Holland, relies on a technology called electrowetting to create low-power color displays. Yesterday, Digitimes reported Amazon has drastically cut Kindle e-ink panel orders for March/April - IHS sees the e-reader market declining 27% in 2013 to 10.9M units. The Digital Reader reported of Amazon's interest in Liquavista in January. (Qualcomm/Mirasol) Comment! [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
- Wednesday, March 6, 4:41 AM Sharp's (SHCAY.PK) future looks a little more secure after confirming that Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has agreed to invest ¥10.3B ($110M) in the struggling Japanese company in return for a 3% stake. Sharp will also provide large TV panels to the Korean firm and increase the shipments of smaller LCDs. Samsung's investment adds to a $120M injection from Qualcomm (QCOM) in December. Sharp's shares surged 14.05% in Tokyo on reports of the latest deal. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories, M&A]
- Friday, December 21, 2012, 12:50 PM Micron (MU -7.4%) is off sharply in response to its FQ3 miss, which had much to do with an 11% drop in DRAM ASPs. CLSA has "downgraded" shares to Outperform from Buy, but Wedbush and Jefferies argue a rebound is due: the latter sees gross margin rising 1500 bps over the next 12 months. SanDisk (SNDK -0.8%) is off just modestly (previous) - Micron noted on its call NAND flash pricing is stable. But DRAM/NAND giant Samsung (SSNLF.PK) fell 4.1% in Seoul. This morning, Micron announced Japanese regulators had signed off on the Elpida deal, as expected. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas, M&A]
- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 8:08 AM Apple (AAPL) roundup: 1) Apple is reportedly set to acquire Color, a once-hyped mobile photo-sharing startup that has bombed. The Next Web notes Color's patents may interest Apple. 2) Apple has lost an appeal on a U.K. ruling that denied an injunction on Samsung's Galaxy Tab on the grounds it isn't cool enough to be confused with an iPad. 3) A couple of analysts forecast the iPad Mini will cannibalize 1M regular iPad sales for every 5M-6M units sold. Apple can probably live with that. 15 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 8:30 AM ASML (ASML) agrees to acquire Cymer (CYMI) for €1.95B ($2.5B) in a cash and stock deal that will enable ASML to speed up the development of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) semiconductor lithography technology, which is critical for manufacturing the next generation of microchips. ASML issues new stock to Intel (INTC) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) representing just over 9% of its share capital to help fund the takeover. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Top Stories, M&A]
- Friday, October 12, 2012, 9:39 AM STMicroelectronics (STM +8.2%) is thinking of breaking itself up, sources tell Bloomberg. The company's analog chip business could be split up from its digital chip business, which is heavily exposed to the soft TV and set-top box markets, and mobile baseband chip JV ST-Ericsson, reported this week to be exploring "strategic options," might be sold. Samsung, which has been increasing its mobile chip exposure, is named as a potential buyer for struggling ST-Ericsson. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Thursday, August 9, 2012, 11:51 AM Not too surprisingly, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is once more saying it has no interest in acquiring Research In Motion (RIMM +2.5%). The comments are in response to a Jefferies report suggesting Samsung is thinking of either licensing BB10 or buying RIM. Samsung already offers Bada and Windows Phone devices to go with its market-leading Android lineup. (earlier: patent verdict overturned) 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 4:32 PM AMD (AMD +9.5%) rallied in afternoon trading, apparently on M&A speculation. Evercore's Patrick Wang says Qualcomm (QCOM) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) have been mentioned as potential buyers. But would these companies, both of whom develop ARM-based processors, be that interested in an x86 processor developer that's heavily exposed to a weak PC market, and is perpetually at a resource disadvantage relative to Intel (INTC)? 15.9% of AMD's float was shorted as of July 13. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 9:21 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is acquiring the mobile phone connectivity and location chip ops of U.K's CSR (CSRE +34.1%) for £200M ($319M). The acquisition covers Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS chips, and is arguably a threat to Samsung supplier Broadcom (BRCM), which has long competed with CSR in these areas. It also provides Samsung with 21 patents that could be useful in its disputes with Apple. The deal comes 6 weeks after Samsung bought Wi-Fi chipmaker Nanoradio. BRCM -1.6%. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Monday, June 11, 2012, 9:39 AM Nokia (NOK -2.8%) trades lower after Samsung (SSNLF.PK) shoots down rumors it's interested in buying the struggling mobile giant. While Nokia's IP, brand, and manufacturing expertise could be of value to Samsung, the integration challenges of any deal would be immense, and regulators might not be thrilled to see it happen. 7 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday, June 1, 2012, 9:11 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has acquired Nanoradio, a Swedish developer of Wi-Fi chips for mobile devices. The deal reflects Samsung's efforts to internally source its mobile components as much as possible, and is a likely negative for Broadcom (BRCM), which is currently a major supplier of Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chips for the world's biggest phone vendor. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 5:46 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has acquired mSpot, developer of a streaming music service that supports cloud storage, and says it will pre-install mSpot's apps on its smartphones and tablets. mSpot bears a strong resemblance to Google Music, which hasn't seen an enthusiastic reception regardless, and could be another sign Samsung is trying to become less dependent on Google (GOOG) as its Android sales surge. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 12:00 PM Should Micron (MU -3.9%) succeed in acquiring Elpida, as is rumored, the DRAM industry will have largely consolidated around 3 vendors: Samsung (SSNLF.PK - 44% share), Micron (23% share), and Hynix (HXSCF.PK - also 23%). Sterne Agee thinks the Street is worried about the deal's price and Micron's financing needs. However, the firm values Elpida's assets at $7B+, far above Micron's reported $2.5B+ offer. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, January 17, 2012, 11:32 AM Research In Motion (RIMM +6.2%) shares spike on heavy volume due to a report detailing Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) possible interest in the company. "One of the biggest assets RIM has is BlackBerry Messenger, and it would be a smart way for Samsung to differentiate itself inside the Android ecosystem," BGR.com speculates. "Jim [Balsillie] is going hard after Samsung." Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Monday, December 26, 2011, 2:06 AM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) board approves a plan to buy Sony's (SNE) entire stake in their LCD joint venture for 1.08T won ($939M). The two companies will sign the deal agreement today. 5 Comments [Global & FX, Tech, M&A]
