- Monday, May 20, 1:07 PM Nomura downgrades SanDisk (SNDK -2.3%) to hold on valuation grounds, leading shares to take a breather following a 38% YTD gain. Though granting SanDisk is benefiting from "disciplined" NAND flash supply growth and improving product mix, Nomura still sees potential risks, such as capacity additions from rivals, high capex due to technology transitions, and the potential for Samsung (SSNLF.PK) to gain an edge down the line from its lead in developing 3D NAND chips. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 15, 11:50 AM Google (GOOG +2.5%) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) will use Google I/O to show off a version of the Galaxy S4 that (like Google's Nexus hardware) runs a stock version of Android, Geek.com reports. Google, which has cracked $900 for the first time today, has been working hard to promote stock Android relative to versions with custom skins such as Samsung's TouchWiz and HTC's Sense, but with limited success. Upcoming Motorola phones will reportedly run stock Android. I/O festivities start at 12PM ET (live blog). (music service reports) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, May 10, 10:58 AM Universal Display (PANL -12.1%) is now tumbling in the wake of its Q1 report and guidance reiteration. Investors may have wanted a guidance hike in light of strong early demand for Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4. Also: materials cost rose by $2M Q/Q, something partly attributed on the earnings call to a mix shift (to green emitters?) and higher materials cost, and (in response to a question about slumping red emitter sales) PANL admitted customers are using materials more efficiently. On the bright side, management noted reports indicate Samsung's Galaxy Note III and an LG phone will feature flexible OLEDs; both are expected in Q4. (Lumia 928) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, April 26, 1:06 PM Universal Display (PANL -2.8%) slumps after Samsung (SSNLF.PK -0.5% in Seoul) posts Q1 results in-line with its projections. As usual, Samsung didn't provide details about phone sales, though it did note smartphone sales fell by a single-digit % Q/Q in the seasonally weak quarter (rivals often fared worse), and expected "weak seasonality to continue" in the smartphone market ahead of a 2H pickup. Still, Galaxy S III sales were steady in Q1 ahead of the S IV launch, and Note II sales rose. Also: Larry Page appears to be a fan of Samsung's OLED displays. (Samsung slides) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 17, 2:23 PM Though Micron (MU -4.4%) and SanDisk (SNDK -4.2%) have joined a general rout in chip stocks and Apple suppliers, a report from Taiwan's Commercial Times indicates DRAM and NAND flash prices continue to trek higher (previous). Contract prices for mainstay 4GB DDR3 PC DRAM modules are said to have risen 8%-10% in early April, and contract prices for 32Gb (4GB) MLC NAND chips reportedly rose 5%-12%. Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is another beneficiary of this trend. SanDisk reports after the close. (Samsung's purchases) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, March 15, 10:12 AM Apple (AAPL +1.7%) rallies as the Street takes the launch of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV, which has an impressive spec sheet but has seen mixed early reviews, in stride. Apple's sell-side fans are circling the wagons, with Gene Munster comparing the S IV to an 'S' iPhone launch. Nomura is less sanguine: noting the popularity of bigger displays and stating its checks indicate a bigger iPhone won't arrive in 2013, it thinks Samsung could overtake Apple in high-end smartphone shipments this year on the back of 35M-40M S IV and Note sales per quarter. 34 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 13, 11:45 AM Better late than never? Bernstein upgrades its stance on the global DRAM industry to Overweight, and in doing so helps Micron (MU +2.2%) make new 52-week highs. The first signs of improved pricing for PC DRAM arrived about two months ago, when Micron shares were much lower. Production cuts, along with the industry's consolidation around Micron, Samsung (SSNLF.PK), and SK Hynix, have stabilized DRAM prices in spite of still-weak PC demand and slowing growth in the amount of DRAM included in the average PC. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, March 8, 2:00 PM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV will indeed use green OLED host emitter materials, SamMobile reports, while adding their use will make the S IV's display 25% more power-efficient. Universal Display (PANL +2%) is higher, though it looks as if the news was partly priced in following Cowen's Feb. 6 report. The S IV, due to be unveiled on Thursday, is also said to feature "floating touch" technology that allows a user's finger to act as a cursor when hovering above a screen. (previous) 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 5, 12:03 PM PC DRAM prices continue to surge in the face of weak OEM demand: Digitimes reports spot prices recently rose another 5% thanks to ongoing production shifts to mobile/server DRAM. Industry consolidation - Samsung (SSNLF.PK), Micron (MU +3.5%), and SK Hynix are seen controlling 90% of the 2013 market - probably isn't hurting either. MKM's Daniel Berenbaum is out with a bullish note on Micron: he's pleased with improving DRAM and NAND pricing, and notes shares trade only 15% above book value. He's a little worried about NAND execution, and Micron's higher debt load post-Elpida. (previous) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, February 25, 10:14 AM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV will use green OLED host materials from both Universal Display (PANL -10%) and another supplier, according to Piper's checks. The report has sent PANL shares, previously bid up on Galaxy S IV optimism, crashing below $30. Separately, Samsung more or less discloses the Galaxy S IV will be announced at a March 14 NYC event, as was widely rumored. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 2:50 PM More on BlackBerry (BBRY -6.8%): Deutsche's Brian Modoff is questioning early reports (from Thorsten Heins and others) of strong Z10 demand in the U.K. and Canada. Deutsche's survey of 60 stores in the countries found no sellouts in the U.K., and that those in Canada were attributed by reps to limited supplies. Meanwhile, Detwiler Fenton notes in its report Samsung "has been poaching key engineers and managers" from BlackBerry as it ramps its enterprise efforts. (earlier) 70 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 10:44 AM After rallying yesterday in the face of Jim Balsillie's disclosure, BlackBerry (BBRY -4.3%) is lower again today. A possible culprit: Detwiler Fentor reports Samsung (SSNLF.PK) plans to unveil an "enterprise platform" at the Feb. 25-28 Mobile World Congress. However, Samsung's SAFE initiative, which provides enterprise security/management tools for its mobile hardware, is already well-known. As is the fact BlackBerry faces competition on the device management software front from Good Technology, SAP, Citrix, and others. 10 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 24, 12:12 PM SanDisk (SNDK +4.1%) is an Apple supplier and issued light guidance on its earnings call ... yet shares have rallied to within $2 of their 52-week high. Why? Because the guidance - Q1 revenue of $1.225B-$1.3B ($1.37B consensus) and 2013 revenue of $5.3B-$5.6B ($6.01B consensus) - is accompanied by a forecast for just 30%-40% NAND flash industry bit growth, and lower bit growth from SanDisk. That's fueling hopes of a healthier pricing/margin environment - gross margin fell 300 bps Y/Y in Q4 to 39.9%. Needham has upgraded shares to Buy. MU +0.8%. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Monday, January 14, 9:12 AM Unsurprisingly, iPhone chip suppliers are joining Apple in getting hit by the WSJ and Nikkei's order cut reports. CRUS -5%. QCOM -1.4%. BRCM -1.3%. SWKS -3.7%. TQNT -1.2%. AVGO -1.9%. Can Samsung (SSNLF.PK - +1.2% in Seoul), which just announced 100M cumulative Galaxy S phone sales, pick up the apparent slack for some of these companies? 17 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 8, 1:19 PM Universal Display (PANL -7.1%) slumps after top customer Samsung (SSNLF.PK) announces it sold ~63M smartphones in Q4. With Strategy Analytics having estimated 56.9M smartphone sales for Q3, investors may have been hoping for a bigger number for the year's strongest quarter. The decline comes as Samsung, LG, Sony, and Panasonic show off (costly) OLED TVs at CES - a 55" LG model will be available for a mere $12K in March. Skyworks (SWKS -2.2%), another Samsung supplier, is also lower. Samsung fell 1.3% in Seoul. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, January 7, 10:10 AM Micron (MU +4.3%) rallies after being added to Citi's Top Picks Live list; the firm sees a cyclical rebound in memory prices giving Micron a lift. Citi's comments arrive as Digitimes reports Samsung (SSNLF.PK) and others have raised their contract prices for 4GB PC DRAM modules following major 2012 declines. mcclux: APPL made up the previous market consensus for iPhone sales in the first 3 days that the 4S was on sale, so I think the answer is no.
