- Wednesday, May 22, 6:41 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) says it will take a 10% stake in Pantech to join Qualcomm and Korea Development Bank as part owners of the handset maker. Looking forward, analysts think Samsung will make more acquisitions with it sitting cash heavy and looking for growth outside of organic channels. Comment! [Tech, Global & FX]
- Monday, May 20, 1:07 PM Nomura downgrades SanDisk (SNDK -2.3%) to hold on valuation grounds, leading shares to take a breather following a 38% YTD gain. Though granting SanDisk is benefiting from "disciplined" NAND flash supply growth and improving product mix, Nomura still sees potential risks, such as capacity additions from rivals, high capex due to technology transitions, and the potential for Samsung (SSNLF.PK) to gain an edge down the line from its lead in developing 3D NAND chips. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, May 17, 11:27 AM Galaxy S4 sales will top 10M next week (less than a month after launching), says Samsung (SSNLF.PK) co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun. The Galaxy S III took 50 days to crack 10M. Samsung thinks S4 sales could eventually reach 100M, or twice the 50M the S III has seen over its lifetime. Suppliers with decent exposure: RFMD, ANAD, PANL, QCOM, BRCM, SYNA. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 15, 11:50 AM Google (GOOG +2.5%) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) will use Google I/O to show off a version of the Galaxy S4 that (like Google's Nexus hardware) runs a stock version of Android, Geek.com reports. Google, which has cracked $900 for the first time today, has been working hard to promote stock Android relative to versions with custom skins such as Samsung's TouchWiz and HTC's Sense, but with limited success. Upcoming Motorola phones will reportedly run stock Android. I/O festivities start at 12PM ET (live blog). (music service reports) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, May 13, 1:43 PM Amazon (AMZN) has bought Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Liquavista e-reader display unit, The Digital Reader uncovers via Dutch regulatory filings; Amazon has subsequently confirmed the purchase. Past rumors indicated Samsung was trying to sell Liquavista, which was developing low-power color displays relying on a process called electrowetting, to Amazon for less than $100M. Look for Liquavista's tech to appear in future Kindle e-readers. 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
- Friday, May 10, 10:58 AM Universal Display (PANL -12.1%) is now tumbling in the wake of its Q1 report and guidance reiteration. Investors may have wanted a guidance hike in light of strong early demand for Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4. Also: materials cost rose by $2M Q/Q, something partly attributed on the earnings call to a mix shift (to green emitters?) and higher materials cost, and (in response to a question about slumping red emitter sales) PANL admitted customers are using materials more efficiently. On the bright side, management noted reports indicate Samsung's Galaxy Note III and an LG phone will feature flexible OLEDs; both are expected in Q4. - Monday, May 6, 1:54 PM Apple (AAPL +2.6%) commanded 57% of smartphone profits in Q1, and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) 43%, estimates Canaccord's Mike Walkley. All other OEMs collectively broke even, after having lost money last year. Apple's profit share is down from 2012's 69%, and Samsung's up from 2012's 34% - chalk those changes up to Samsung's share gains and Apple's gross margin decline. Walkley also writes Samsung's Galaxy S4 is off to a strong start (in spite of some reports of overheating), that checks indicate U.S. BlackBerry Z10 (BBRY +0.7%) sales are soft, and that U.K. Q10 supplies have been limited. 35 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, May 6, 6:09 AM Apple's (AAPL) stringent policies with telecom carriers - including minimum sales requirements - and the iPhone's high price and its technical needs, are preventing the company from addressing a market of 2.8B customers, research firm Asymco.com estimates. Tellingly, Apple has signed fewer than a dozen new carriers since September 2011, helping to explain the device's slowing growth and Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) increasing dominance. 10 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 1, 7:09 PM IDC's Q1 tablet figures are even gaudier than Strategy Analytics'. the firm thinks shipments soared 142% Y/Y to 49.2M. Strategy estimates "only" 117% growth to 40.6M units. The main reason: IDC thinks Android (GOOG) shipments surged to 27.8M, giving them a 56.5% share; Strategy only estimates 17.6M. The iPad (AAPL) is estimated to have a 39.6% share, down from Q4's 43.6%. Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) share is believed to have risen to 17.9% from 15.1%, and Amazon's (AMZN) to have dropped to 3.7% from 11.5% (shipment timings are a likely factor). Whereas Strategy thinks 3M Windows 8/RT (MSFT) tablets were shipped, IDC estimates only 1.8M (1.6M Win. 8, 200K RT), with 900K involving Surface. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 29, 7:10 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is working on an 11" Nexus tablet sporting the Galaxy S4's Exynos 5410 CPU, and an 8" tablet featuring a 1080p OLED display, according to SamMobile, whose Samsung scoops have been pretty accurate. The Tab 8.0 would be a positive for PANL, especially since OLEDs haven't been used much in tablets, but SamMobile suggests Samsung is still contending with OLED screen burn-in. The report comes as Samsung announces the Galaxy Tab 3, a low-end 7" device meant to succeed the Tab 2. IDC estimates Samsung had 15.1% of the tablet market in Q4. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Saturday, April 27, 11:03 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) managed to get 6 chips in the U.S. version of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4, per iFixit's teardown: the high-end APQ8064 app processor, a 4G baseband chip, an audio codec chip, an RF transceiver (beating out SIMO), and 2 power management ICs; the U.K. version uses a Snapdragon 600 baseband/app processor. Also found: a MXIM microcontroller, an SIMG video transmitter, a SWKS 2G power amplifier module, a BRCM NFC chip (likely to go with a combo chip), ATML and SYNA touch controllers, and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) NAND flash (previous). - Friday, April 26, 1:06 PM Universal Display (PANL -2.8%) slumps after Samsung (SSNLF.PK -0.5% in Seoul) posts Q1 results in-line with its projections. As usual, Samsung didn't provide details about phone sales, though it did note smartphone sales fell by a single-digit % Q/Q in the seasonally weak quarter (rivals often fared worse), and expected "weak seasonality to continue" in the smartphone market ahead of a 2H pickup. Still, Galaxy S III sales were steady in Q1 ahead of the S IV launch, and Note II sales rose. Also: Larry Page appears to be a fan of Samsung's OLED displays. - Friday, April 26, 5:46 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) strengthened its lead as the world's top vendor of mobile phones and of smartphones in Q1, IDC estimates. The South Korean giant increased its market share in the latter category to 32.7% from 28.8 a year earlier and shipped more smartphones than the next four providers combined. Apple's (AAPL) share slipped to 17.3% from 23%. The global cellular phone market grew 4% on year to 418.6M devices, with smartphones outshipping feature phones for the first time. 24 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Thursday, April 25, 8:28 PM Samsung Electronics (SSNLF.PK) says its Q1 profit rose 42% to a record high on strong smartphone sales. Net profit rose to a record KRW7.15T ($6.4B), up from KRW5.05T a year earlier. Operating profit rose 54% to KRW8.8T from KRW5.7T. Sales rose 16.8% to KRW52.9T from KRW45.3T, coming in in line with the company's guidance of KRW51T to KRW53T. The results stand in stark contrast those of Apple (AAPL), which earlier this week reported its first profit drop in a decade and forecast margins to decline in the current quarter ending in June. 95 Comments [Tech, Earnings, Global & FX]
- Thursday, April 25, 5:03 AM Notwithstanding some fairly tepid reviews for Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4, "pre-order demand is much stronger than expected," the company said today, "so it's difficult to rapidly boost supply in the short term." The problem has prompted Sprint and T-Mobile to delay their launches of the device, which is due to be released tomorrow in South Korea and in other countries on Saturday. 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 24, 1:31 PM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV is a superb phone, if one can cope with a cheap plastic feel and too many gimmicks. That seems to be the consensus from the first full reviews. The Verge praises the S IV's display, camera, and performance, but still considers the HTC One a better bet. "The Galaxy S4 is fast and impressive, but it's also noisy and complex." TechCrunch and Gizmodo deliver similar takes. But others (I, II) make the case that more is ultimately better (this mindset has worked for Samsung thus far). The reviews arrive as Sprint and T-Mobile state their S IV launches will be delayed due to inventory issues. Key suppliers: QCOM, BRCM, SYNA, PANL, ATML, RFMD, TQNT. (previous) 23 Comments [Tech]
