Samsung (SSNLF.PK) commercials mocking the iPhone and its fans (video) could be having an impact: YouGov's BrandIndex metric, which tracks the positive and negative buzz surrounding brands, finds Apple's (AAPL) buzz score has dropped noticeably since the ads began playing. It's added adults ages 50+ are mostly responsible for the drop. Samsung's much-anticipated Galaxy Nexus went on sale yesterday.

Sharp (SHCAF.PK), Samsung (SSNLF.PK), and 6 other LCD panel makers have agreed to pay a combined $388M to settle customer allegations of price-fixing from 1999-2006, according to U.S. court filings. It would probably be harder to levy price-fixing allegations for this year, given the crash in panel prices.

Could Samsung (SSNLF.PK) join NVDA and QCOM in competing in the PC CPU market after Windows 8 (MSFT) arrives? The company's just-announced Exynos 5250 chip, which relies on ARM's (ARMH) Cortex-A15 cores, raises the possibility. Though initially aimed at high-end tablets, the 5250's powerful specs suggest INTC and AMD might have one more rival to contend with in a year's time. (also)

Reviewers are generally raving about Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone to run on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The Verge gives it a score of 8.6/10, while Engadget calls it "possibly ... the best phone available today, period." Apple (AAPL) won't be pleased to hear that, even if the Galaxy Nexus' large form factor is likely to keep some iPhone users from jumping ship. (also)

In what might be further proof of the devastating impact tablets have had on the netbook market, a leaked e-mail suggests Samsung (SSNLF.PK) will discontinue netbook production in Q1 2012, and instead focus on building "ultraportables" and ultrabooks. Weak netbook demand has taken a heavy toll on Acer (ASIYF.PK), and has led to plunging sales of Intel's (INTC) Atom processors.

Nokia (NOK) remained the market's top vendor from a shipment standpoint, with 23.9% share - that's down 430 bps Y/Y, but up 110 bps from Q2, thanks to strong sales of low-end phones. Samsung (SSNLF.PK) came second with 17.8% share (up 60 bps Y/Y). (PR)

Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has given up on its attempts to get the iPhone 4S banned on its home turf of South Korea, out of fear that a ban would trigger a backlash among consumers interested in buying the device. But judging by its hard-line stance towards Samsung up to this point (I, II), Apple (AAPL) might not be so diplomatic.
