Reviewers are generally raving about Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone to run on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The Verge gives it a score of 8.6/10, while Engadget calls it "possibly ... the best phone available today, period." Apple (AAPL) won't be pleased to hear that, even if the Galaxy Nexus' large form factor is likely to keep some iPhone users from jumping ship. (also)

In what might be further proof of the devastating impact tablets have had on the netbook market, a leaked e-mail suggests Samsung (SSNLF.PK) will discontinue netbook production in Q1 2012, and instead focus on building "ultraportables" and ultrabooks. Weak netbook demand has taken a heavy toll on Acer (ASIYF.PK), and has led to plunging sales of Intel's (INTC) Atom processors.

Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is in late-stage talks with Google (GOOG) to launch a TV next year using the latter's software. The TV will enable users to surf the Web - including social networks - and check e-mail, with Samsung hoping that the device will help it to fend off price erosion.

Samsung (SSNLF.PK) intends to launch a redesigned 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab in Germany this week as it looks to get around a ban on the tablet device because of its similarity to the iPad (AAPL). Samsung hopes that changing the design of the frame and the location of the speaker will do the trick.

More from Gartner: Total mobile phone shipments rose an estimated 5.6% Y/Y in Q3, to 440.5M units. Nokia (NOK) remained the market's top vendor from a shipment standpoint, with 23.9% share - that's down 430 bps Y/Y, but up 110 bps from Q2, thanks to strong sales of low-end phones. Samsung (SSNLF.PK) came second with 17.8% share (up 60 bps Y/Y). (PR)

Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has given up on its attempts to get the iPhone 4S banned on its home turf of South Korea, out of fear that a ban would trigger a backlash among consumers interested in buying the device. But judging by its hard-line stance towards Samsung up to this point (I, II), Apple (AAPL) might not be so diplomatic.

While "the pricey Android" guys are likely to feel the immediate brunt of the $199 Kindle Fire (AMZN), Brooke Crothers believes the iPad (AAPL) will be vulnerable in the longer term. The impact is "as inevitable as the $999 MacBook Air," which began life in the $1,800-$3,000 range.

Buoyed by strong demand for its NAND flash and mobile DRAM chips, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) plans to boost its capex and R&D spending by 27% next year. One area of focus will be OLED displays, a positive for PANL. Another will be application processors, which could lead Samsung to put more of its own processors into its smartphones relative to chips from QCOM, TXN, and NVDA. (previously)

A Samsung (SSNLF.PK) exec claims Android, which is responsible for most of the company's recent smartphone success, will land on 66% of its devices next year. However, Samsung also wants half of the remainder to run on Windows Phone (MSFT), and the other half to run on its Bada mid-range OS, as it tries to keep from becoming too dependent on Google (GOOG).

The EU seems to have had enough of Apple (AAPL) and Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) patent suit free-for-all (I, II, III): regulators are investigating whether the companies have broken antitrust laws by trying to have each others' products banned, rather than attempting to license their IP on reasonable terms.

Looking to cut costs at its loss-making TV division, Sony (SNE) wants to sell its nearly 50% stake in its LCD JV with Samsung (SSNLF.PK) to the Korean tech giant, Nikke reports. One probable factor for consideration for Samsung is the poor performance of its own panel ops.

Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) ~300% Y/Y growth in smartphone sales shows how much Google (GOOG) has its work cut out for it if it wants to keep Motorola's (MMI) phone business - Motorola's Q3 phone shipments rose only 20%. Meanwhile, Sandisk (SNDK) and Micron (MU) are up slightly on the results and commentary provided for Samsung's memory business.
