- Friday, January 25, 1:46 PM Solid-state drive makers STEC (STEC +6.3%) and OCZ (OCZ +6.7%) are posting big gains in the absence of major news. 21.1% of STEC's float, and 31.4% of OCZ's, was shorted, as of Dec. 31. The companies are facing growing competition from the likes of SanDisk, Micron, and Samsung, who can source NAND flash memory at cost. On the flip side, IHS is forecasting SSD shipments will more than double this year to 83M, fueled by growing ultrabook sales and enterprise adoption. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 2:23 PM STEC (STEC +1.4%) is up a bit after activist investor Balch Hill, which owns 9% of the struggling solid-state drive vendor, delivers a letter to STEC's board arguing the company should consider a sale. Balch Hill also calls on STEC, which is dealing with the fallout from insider trading charges against its founder and former CEO, to slash its R&D budget and focus on its core serial-attached SCSI (SAS) product line. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, December 3, 2012, 12:45 PM STEC (STEC) opened higher after announcing CEO Mark Moshayedi and his brother Manouch, the company's founder, had bought 275K shares in late November, but has since given up its gains. Manouch resigned as chairman and CEO in September after being charged with insider trading by the SEC. Comment! [Tech]

- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 9:58 AM Flash memory hardware firms continue to have a rough fall. STEC (STEC -21.9%) is nosediving due to the Q4 guidance provided with its Q3 beat - a forecast for revenue of $36M-$40M and EPS of -$0.31 to -$0.35 is short of a consensus of $44.1M and -$0.22. Lazard and Craig-Hallum have downgraded shares in response - the latter cites low visibility on OEM ramps (an ongoing problem), cash burn, and risks related to STEC's new strategy to sell directly to companies building their own hardware - Fusion-io (FIO -1.9%) does the same. (transcript) (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 4:14 PM STEC (STEC): Q3 EPS of -$0.24 beats by $0.04. Revenue of $42.1M (-41.9% Y/Y) beats by $1.3M. Shares +3.7% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]

- Friday, October 26, 2012, 4:42 PM In a sign the Street is on edge over enterprise storage demand, Quantum (QTM -9%) and Fusion-io (FIO -4.5%) sold off again today following disappointing earnings reports (I, II). In Quantum's case, the company's decision to issue $60M in convertible notes (they sport a 4.5% yield and $1.65/share conversion price) also isn't going over well. Many peers posted modest declines, though depressed QLogic and Emulex bounced following their earnings reports. (EMC guidance) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 10, 2012, 9:17 AM STEC (STEC) -5.2% in response to OCZ's (OCZ) warning, which includes a forecast the solid-state drive maker will report a "negative gross margins and a significant net loss" for FQ2 (August quarter) - the consensus was for a $0.15/share loss. OCZ, which originally planned to report earnings today, is hosting a CC at 10AM ET to discuss its CEO change and problems (webcast). Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, September 17, 2012, 4:45 PM OCZ has resumed trading. Shares are down 8.5% to $4.08 in response to news of CEO Ryan Peterson's resignation, and within striking distance of their 52-week low of $3.90. STEC and other rivals could benefit from OCZ's management turmoil. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, September 5, 2012, 5:29 PM OCZ Technology (OCZ) has resumed trading following its FQ2 warning. Shares are down 17.7% AH to $4.41, putting them within striking distance of their 52-week low of $4.14. Rival STEC could also move in trading tomorrow. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 10:04 AM Marvel (MRVL) and SanDisk (SNDK), rivals in the solid-state drive (SSD) controller space, are partnering to offer a low-power server solution that features an ARM-based Marvell processor and a SanDisk SSD. Marvell is aggressively targeting the young ARM server market, and has already reached deals with Dell and Taiwan's MiTAC. Also: Marvell is announcing the general availability of its praised DragonFly flash caching solution, which competes with offerings from FIO, STEC, and others. (NTAP/FIO) Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, August 16, 2012, 9:32 AM IBM is acquiring Texas Memory Systems (TMS), a maker of high-end flash memory hardware, for an undisclosed sum. TMS offers standalone systems that compete with Violin Memory and EMC-acquired XtremIO, and PCI-Express modules for servers that compete with solutions from Fusion-io (FIO), STEC, and OCZ Technology (OCZ +2.9%). The deal is an attempt by IBM to invigorate a storage business that has been seeing declining sales. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 4:35 PM More on STEC's Q2: Gross margin was 37.2%, down 770 bps Y/Y and up 80 bps Q/Q. The company expects Q3 revenue of $40M-$42M and EPS of -$0.27 to -$0.31, worse than a consensus of $49.5M and -$0.19. STEC suggests weak OEM demand is to blame (a similar excuse was provided 3 months ago). It also forecasts the settlement of a class action suit related to an '09 stock offering that has led to SEC charges will cost $34M-$36M. STEC -8.9% AH. FIO -1.9%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 4:20 PM STEC (STEC): Q2 EPS of -$0.27 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $40.7M (-50.7% Y/Y) in-line. Shares -8.9% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]

$STEC is no better than $OCZ - only held up by cash position that will dwindle due to massive losses... - View all 1 replies

If $EMC buying XtremIO is true, where does that leave $STEC - historically a major EMC supplier...could be BIG problems. - View all 0 replies
