- Thursday, June 21, 2012, 7:23 PM Global TV shipments fell nearly 8% Y/Y in Q1, estimates DisplaySearch, as firmer pricing hurt volumes, and consumers directed a greater chunk of their electronics spending at mobile devices. LCD shipments fell 3%, while plasma shipments tumbled 18%. Samsung (SSNLF.PK) claimed a 26% share of the market, and was followed by LG (14.6%) and Sony (SNE - 9.4%). Some key TV industry suppliers: GLW, AUO, LPL, STM, NXPI. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 1:33 PM STMicroelectronics (STM +3%), hammered along with many other Euro tech names this spring, bounces with the help of an upgrade to Hold from Williams Financial. It thinks STM is witnessing trends similar to those seen by other diversified chipmakers: its booking and backlog are stable, but chip buyers have become more cautious in recent weeks. (earlier) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 11:47 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) and Broadcom (BRCM) have begun producing 4G baseband and Wi-Fi chips, respectively, for the next-gen iPhone (AAPL) via TSMC's (TSM) 28nm process, Digitimes reports. OmniVision (OVTI), STMicroelectronics (STM), Texas Instruments (TXN), and NXP (NXPI) are also said to be ramping production of next-gen iPhone chips. It's added TSMC's 28nm supply constraints, exacerbated by Nvidia's (NVDA) significant needs, continue to be a problem. 1 Comment [Tech]

Premarket gainers: BNHN +22%. STM +6%.
Losers: EXPR -22%. Comment! [On the Move] - Monday, May 21, 2012, 12:43 PM Taiwan's MediaTek, long a top baseband chip supplier to Chinese and white-label OEMs, has landed 2G baseband chip orders from Nokia (NOK), Digitimes reports. This could be a negative from Broadcom (BRCM +2.5%) and STMicroelectronics (STM +3.5%), who have grown their baseband chip sales to Nokia as former top supplier Texas Instruments gradually exits the market. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 10:11 AM In spite of reportedly being given priority by TSMC (TSM) for output, Qualcomm's (QCOM) 28nm chip supply issues are continuing, says Digitimes, with the company failing to secure adequate quantities of its cutting-edge Snapdragon S4 processors. As a result, Samsung, HTC, and other customers are said to be weighing other chip suppliers, such as Nvidia (NVDA), ST-Ericsson (STM, ERIC), and Intel (INTC). (yesterday) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 4:55 AM STMicroelectronics (STM) +1.7% premarket (and +4.6% in Europe) after Goldman raises its rating to Buy from Neutral, and Citi raises it to Neutral from Sell. (source, in French) Comment! [On the Move, Tech]

Losers: ICON -14%. BIDU -6%. GSK -3%. Comment! [On the Move] - Monday, April 23, 2012, 6:40 PM More on STMicroelectronics' Q1: The chipmaker expects Q2 sales to grow 4.5%-10.5% Q/Q (consensus is for 8.4%). STM, which has lost share in multiple markets, also sees growth continuing in 2H, fueled by analog and MEMS chip demand. ST-Ericsson's Q1 results are also out, and they help explain today's massive restructuring plan: sales fell 35% Y/Y, and net loss rose to $312M from $234M in Q4 and $178M in Q1 '11. STM +1.7% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, April 23, 2012, 5:26 PM STMicroelectronics (STM): Q1 EPS of -$0.14 misses by $0.09. Revenue of $2.02B (-20% Y/Y) in-line. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech]
- Monday, April 23, 2012, 11:54 AM More on ST-Ericsson: HTC says it will co-develop an app processor with ST-Ericsson for low-end smartphones, with devices featuring the chip arriving in 2013. The deal is further evidence HTC, which recently rolled out high-end phones featuring Nvidia's (NVDA) Tegra 3 chip, is trying to lessen its heavy dependence on Qualcomm (QCOM). Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, April 23, 2012, 11:48 AM Mobile baseband chipmaker ST-Ericsson (STM, ERIC), trying to end its heavy losses as it struggles to compete with Qualcomm and others, is announcing a major restructuring program. The JV plans to slash 1,700 jobs and will outsource app processor R&D to 50% owner STMicroelectronics, while offering "complete system solutions" through partnerships. Restructuring costs are pegged at $130M-$150M, and annual cost savings at $320M. Comment! [Tech]

MT -3%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Friday, March 30, 2012, 10:21 AM InvenSense (INVN -6.3%) tumbles after Oppenheimer downgrades shares to Perform. The firm is worried about InvenSense's May 15 lockup expiration, which will result in 45% of its float being available, and thinks the motion sensor chip market is more open to competition than previously believed. Both Microsoft's Kinect and rival chipmakers such as STM and MXIM are seen as threats. (previously) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
