- Thursday, February 7, 8:19 AM More on Statoil's (STO) Q4 results: Plans 2013 capex of $19B, up from $18B in 2012. Reiterates its forecast of lower Y/Y production in 2013, and says a recent asset swap with Wintershall would shave ~40K boe/day off its production. Still aims to raise production to more than 2.5B boe/day by 2020, a 25% increase over current levels. Shares +1.3% premarket. Comment! [Energy, Earnings]
- Thursday, February 7, 4:35 AM Statoil (STO): Q4 net profit -49% to 12.98B Norwegian kroner ($2.36B), or 4.07 kroner per share, and vs consensus of 11.94B kroner. Adjusted EBIT +5.2% to 48.3B kroner vs 46.46B kroner. Revenues -12% to 160.6B kroner vs 164.22B. Proposes dividend of 6.75/share. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Energy, Dividends]
- Monday, February 4, 9:13 AM Statoil (STO) is slapped with an improvement order by Norway’s safety watchdog after a serious gas leak at its Heimdal platform last year. The action follows a probe by the Petroleum Safety Authority that uncovered “serious regulatory breaches” by STO, which led to the incident in which 3,500 kg of gas escaped, creating a potentially combustible cloud around the facility. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, January 31, 10:39 AM Statoil (STO) reportedly is in talks with Azerbaijan’s state oil company Socar to take a major role in developing a cluster of fields centered on the Umid gas discovery, based on a similar model to the BP-operated Azer-Chirag-Gunashli project in which STO is a partner. Umid may be similar in size to ACG, one of the world’s largest oil and gas fields with remaining recoverable reserves of up to 6B barrels. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, January 31, 8:57 AM BP begins production from one of the world's largest subsea developments, the PSVM development off Angola. Production is set to hit 70K bbl/day of oil before more than doubling over the coming year as two other fields come on line. PSVM is being exploited with a FPSO vessel with 1.6M barrels of storage capacity; it's the first FPSO to work Angola's ultra-deepwater plays. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, January 25, 2:51 PM Four members of BP's staff apparently died in last week's terrorist attack on the In Amenas gas plant in Algeria, and Statoil (STO) confirms three deaths. BP says it will apply lessons learned to prevent future tragedies; some ought to involve security, as just 32 militants overran 100 guards to capture the plant. Otherwise, the oil majors are hardly shaken by the events in North Africa. 7 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, January 23, 2:33 PM The partners in Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz 2 gas field - including BP, STO and TOT - will make a final investment decision on the project in 2013 and choose between two pipelines vying to carry gas to Europe. The gas will be transported via Turkey, where it will link up with either the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline or Nabucco West. Deliveries are expected to start in 2018, a year later than previously planned. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, January 22, 12:32 PM Energy companies operating in North Africa face a long-lasting security threat likely to change the way they operate after the bloody conclusion to the hostage crisis at the Algerian gas plant, which also threatens to undermine the country’s growth prospects. The attack "will only add to investor skepticism about the country" FT calls "a fading star" of the oil and gas industry. BP -1.1%, STO -0.2%. 1 Comment [Energy, Global & FX]
- Sunday, January 20, 5:40 AM Algerian troops have stormed the gas plant in the Sahara desert that had been taken over by Islamist terrorists, killing all the militants. However, while 792 hostages survived, 23 were killed during the four-day siege. The terrorists' capturing of the facility, which is operated by Statoil (STO), BP and Algeria's state oil company, highlights the vulnerability of the operations of multinational energy firms in the Sahara. 16 Comments [Energy, Top Stories]
- Friday, January 18, 10:58 AM "Around 60" foreigners reportedly continue to be held hostage at the Algerian gas plant, with ~650 people free from the standoff, but information remains sketchy. BP says there “a small number” of employees whose current location and situation remain uncertain. Meanwhile, the crisis is a serious threat to Algeria, the no. 3 gas supplier to the EU and the main source of revenue to the country. 4 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, January 18, 9:48 AM Some analysts say the coming leadership change at EOG Resources (EOG +0.3%) makes a takeover more possible, with Chevron (CVX) and Statoil (STO) seen as potential suitors. EOG is “an attractive target from the perspective of a super-high-quality asset base in all the right plays in the U.S.,” an RBC analyst says. With CEO Mark Papa leaving in June, “it does increase the possibility” of a deal. Comment! [Energy, M&A]
- Thursday, January 17, 3:53 PM The Algerian press agency reports the assault by the Algerian army to free the hostages at the Amenas gas plant has ended. Some hostages were killed during the raid but a full account of casualties is not yet available. 10 Comments [Breaking News, Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, January 17, 1:38 PM BP (BP +0.3%) and Statoil (STO +0.2%) shares show little reaction to developments at their jointly operated Amenas gas facility in Algeria. "Relative to total production, the volumes [there] aren’t that high," Argus' Phil Weiss says. “Energy stocks overall are up today, and this incident isn’t material enough to overcome general market trends in the sector.” Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, January 17, 8:49 AM Algerian troops reportedly have stormed the gas plant held by Islamic militants, possibly killing 14 kidnappers and 34 hostages. Some 41 foreigners reportedly had been seized, and at least 20 were said to have escaped the besieged compound; the inconsistencies in the numbers may be attributable to the "fog of war." Comment! [Breaking News, Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, January 17, 7:57 AM As many as 20 hostages, including several Americans, reportedly have escaped their captors at an Algerian gas pumping station taken over by Islamic militants. Algeria's government was in talks throughout the night with the U.S. and France over whether they could help against the militants. Crude oil pushes moderately higher: Brent +0.5% to $110.28, WTI +0.5% to $94.75. 3 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, January 16, 2:03 PM Reports of the number of casualties and hostages taken by Islamic militants at a Western-operated gas field in Algeria vary widely. Reports have said 41 foreigners were kidnapped, but a later report said 150 employees of a French catering firm also were being held. U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says Americans were among the hostages, but the number of Americans held wasn't known. 4 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
