Shares of Sun Healthcare Group (SUNH -16.9%) get slammed after its Q1 met EPS estimates but missed on revenue. Overall revenue fell slightly Y/Y/, due in large part to the CMS Final Rule for Medicare reimbursement that became effective late last year. CEO William Mathies also adds that the reimbursement changes are continuing to have "a significant year-over-year impact" on the company's operations.

Shares of hospital firms extended their decline over concerns that government spending may dry up. A Citigroup note yesterday pinpointed eight firms heavily reliant on Medicare funding that could be especially vulnerable, and each has dropped sharply over two days: HCA -5.6%, HMA -3.4%, LPNT -4.1%, SUNH -3.9%, UHS -4.8%, THC -8.8%, LNCR -4.4%, AHS -8.4%.

Sun Healthcare (SUNH) falls 6.8% after updating investors with lower guidance for FY11 after reviewing the impact of new rules for skilled nursing facilities. The company now sees revenue between $1.925B-$1.945B - down from previous guidance of $1.95B-$1.995B - and EPS falling in a range of $0.83-$0.94.

Shares of health-care providers tumble after Medicare announced late Friday that it will cut payment rates to skilled nursing facilities by 11.1% next fiscal year. Jefferies downgrades Kindred Healthcare (KND -0.4%), Skilled Healthcare (SKH -0.3%) and Sun Healthcare (SUNH -1.8%) to Hold from Buy based on an increasing likelihood that skilled nursing facilities and long-term care hospitals will face multiple years of Medicare pricing pressure, with the overhang keeping shares rangebound for the foreseeable future.
