- Wednesday, January 23, 1:25 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has passed Apple to become the world's top chip buyer, per Gartner: the firm estimates Samsung accounted for 8% of global chip purchases last year thanks to a 28.9% increase in consumption to $23.9B. Apple bought $21.4B worth of chips (7.2% share), and H-P $14B (4.7%). Samsung is trying to source more of those chips internally, as evidenced by last year's acquisitions (I, II). Some major Samsung mobile chip suppliers: SWKS, RFMD, MXIM, BRCM, QCOM. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 16, 11:40 AM Is the bad news fully baked in? Apple (AAPL +3.6%), which closed yesterday trading around 7.4x FY13E EPS (exc. cash), has rallied back above $500 in spite of Pac Crest's downgrade. The company has received favorable notes today as well: Cowen says its checks lead it to believe Apple's smartphone share rose to ~23.5% in calendar Q4 from 16.4% in Q3. Some suppliers are also up: CRUS +4.5%. OVTI +1.4%. Sterne Agee is defending Skyworks (SWKS +3.5%) after meeting with its CFO. 42 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 15, 12:18 PM Another day, another Apple supplier selloff due to iPhone sales worries. CRUS -2.8%. NTE -3.2%. BRCM -1.6%. SWKS -2.5%. AVGO -1.5%. LPL -3.5% MU -1.9%. Cirrus Logic now trades at just 7.3x FY14 (ends March '14) EPS, putting it squarely in value territory provided estimates don't get cut too much - Sterne Agee thinks iPhone order cuts are already baked into March quarter Cirrus estimates. Skyworks is at 8.4x FY14E (ends Sep. '14) EPS. (yesterday) (Multi-Fineline warning) 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, January 14, 11:19 AM On cue, Apple's (AAPL -2.8%) sell-side fans are defending it following reports of iPhone component order cuts due to weaker-than-expected demand. UBS, one of the first to report of production cuts, says it detects no change to iPhone orders since December, though it worries shares could be pressured near-term. Wells Fargo notes Apple's 65M-unit iPhone 5 display order (per The Nikkei) was "an unrealistic number to begin with." JPMorgan says it only forecast 25M calendar Q1 iPhone 5 builds regardless. Notable Calls: "This sure feels like capitulation, doesn't it?" 41 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, January 14, 9:12 AM Unsurprisingly, iPhone chip suppliers are joining Apple in getting hit by the WSJ and Nikkei's order cut reports. CRUS -5%. QCOM -1.4%. BRCM -1.3%. SWKS -3.7%. TQNT -1.2%. AVGO -1.9%. Can Samsung (SSNLF.PK - +1.2% in Seoul), which just announced 100M cumulative Galaxy S phone sales, pick up the apparent slack for some of these companies? 17 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Sunday, January 13, 9:38 PM Apple (AAPL) has cut iPhone 5 component orders for calendar Q1 due to weaker-than-expected demand, sources tell the WSJ; display orders are said to be cut by ~50%. The Nikkei also claims display orders have been halved, albeit from an elevated level of 65M. The articles back up analyst reports of iPhone production and component order cuts, and raise the question of whether Apple needs a cheaper iPhone and/or one with a larger display to bolster its international share. Suppliers on watch: LPL, CRUS, OVTI, QCOM, BRCM, SWKS, TQNT, AVGO. 94 Comments [Tech, Top Stories]
- Thursday, January 10, 10:27 AM Cirrus Logic (CRUS +3.2%) is trading higher this morning, and so are RF component makers Skyworks (SWKS +3.2%), TriQuint (TQNT +2.4%), and RF Micro (RFMD +2.9%). Guidance hikes from Nokia and Apple-dependent Dialog Semi seem to be contributing to the gains. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 9, 2:03 PM Qualcomm (QCOM +1.1%), Skyworks (SWKS +2.9%), and Avago (AVGO +1.8%) are ticking higher following bullish coverage launches (I, II, III) from Topeka. The firm sees Qualcomm continuing to gain baseband chip share and consider fears of vertical integration overstated; thinks Skyworks will keep expanding its lineup beyond power amplifiers; and believes the sale of phones supporting numerous 4G bands will benefit Avago's BAW filter business. Meanwhile, Qualcomm's surreal CES keynote, replete with Big Bird and Maroon 5, continues to make waves. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, January 8, 1:19 PM Universal Display (PANL -7.1%) slumps after top customer Samsung (SSNLF.PK) announces it sold ~63M smartphones in Q4. With Strategy Analytics having estimated 56.9M smartphone sales for Q3, investors may have been hoping for a bigger number for the year's strongest quarter. The decline comes as Samsung, LG, Sony, and Panasonic show off (costly) OLED TVs at CES - a 55" LG model will be available for a mere $12K in March. Skyworks (SWKS -2.2%), another Samsung supplier, is also lower. Samsung fell 1.3% in Seoul. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, January 4, 6:18 PM A stat-filled Nomura infographic offers plenty of market share data on tablet chip suppliers. Some details: Broadcom is estimated to supply 70%-75% of the tablet market's Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chips, 35% of its GPS chips, and 60% of its touchscreen controllers; Qualcomm is estimated to provide 30%-35% of its power management ICs, 70% of its baseband chips, and 55% of its GPS chips; and Skyworks is believed to provide 30%-35% of its RF/front-end chips. Also, OmniVision (50%-55% image sensor share) is estimated to derive 19% of its sales from the tablet market. (smartphones) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, January 4, 1:23 PM Global smartphone shipments will rise 27% in 2013 to 875M units after growing 41% in 2012, predicts Strategy Analytics. But accompanying that growth is a big mix shift towards emerging markets, where cheap Android phones often dominate. Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is seen growing its share to 33% from 2012's 31%, and Apple to 21% from 20%. With the broader mobile phone market showing minimal growth, the feature phone market, where Nokia (NOK) has an outsized share, is bound to continue declining. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, January 4, 12:22 PM Deutsche's U.S. team follows up on an overnight note from the firm's Japanese unit about iPhone production cuts by declaring Apple's (AAPL -2%) stock "has digested this supply chain issue and likely has lower unit production already priced in." Notable Calls is encouraged by this due to the track record of the analyst in question (presumably Chris Whitmore). Apple has bounced a little off its session lows. Cirrus Logic (CRUS -3.8%) and Skyworks (SWKS -2.9%) are faring worse. 27 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, January 4, 9:50 AM Silicon Image (SIMG -8.7%) opens down sharply after warning it expects Q4 revenue of $59M-$60M, below prior guidance of $64M-$67M and a consensus of $65.7M. The chipmaker blames "the rescheduling of certain orders by a large customer," and says it expects Q1 product sales to be up Q/Q. Is that "large customer" Samsung? SIMG supplies MHL video transmitter chips for the Galaxy S III and other Samsung smartphones. Other key Samsung chip suppliers include MXIM, SWKS, BRCM, and ADNC. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 3, 10:50 AM RF component makers TriQuint (TQNT +4.1%), RF Micro (RFMD +3.7%), and (to a lesser extent) Skyworks (SWKS +1.6%) trade higher after Longbow gives each of them a Buy rating. Skyworks and TriQuint have slumped since mid-September, which happens to be around when the iPhone 5 launched - both chipmakers have iPhone 5 power amplifier design wins. RF Micro, whose shares were more depressed at the time, has fared better. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 26, 2012, 11:10 AM IDC sees global chip sales rising 4.9% in 2013 to $319B, a forecast that's nearly even with Gartner's 4.5%. However, the computing segment is expected to grow a mere 1.7%, as the PC industry's woes continue pressuring sales. The consumer segment is expected to grow a healthier 9.8%, as the tablet boom offsets slumping demand for consoles, DVD players, and other hardware. The communications segment is seen growing 6.5%, buoyed by surging 4G chip sales. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 24, 2012, 10:02 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is currently aiming to sell 510M mobile phones next year, up from a 2012 tally of ~420M. A whopping 390M of the 2013 sales are expected to involve smartphones, with the company predicting demand for 4G connections will boost sales. Gartner is forecasting global smartphone sales will rise another 33% next year; they rose 47% Y/Y in Q3, a quarter in which Samsung was estimated by Strategy Analytics to have sold 56.9M smartphones. 2 Comments [Tech]
