- Wednesday, June 12, 4:52 PM Spreadtrum (SPRD) +24.3% AH after resuming trading in the wake of its big Q2 guidance hike. Mobile chipmakers with decent Chinese exposure are rallying in sympathy; in addition to the numbers, Spreadtrum's remarks about strong demand for low-end smartphones in China and other emerging markets are likely going over well. RFMD +2% AH. SWKS +3%. QCOM +0.5%. 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 12, 11:47 AM Maxim joins JPMorgan and Susquehanna in reporting of Galaxy S4 weakness: analyst Ashok Kumar says Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is cutting shipments due to weak sales and rising channel inventory, and that checks indicate consumers are opting for the cheaper Galaxy S III. He thinks touch controller supplier Synaptics (SYNA -2.7%) could be affected; others possibly at risk include ATML, RFMD, BRCM, PANL, TQNT, ANAD, and SWKS. As far as suppliers go, much still depends on how much demand is simply shifting to mid-range phones, or to rival high-end devices such as HTC's One, Sony's Xperia Z, LG's Optimus G, and Lenovo's K900. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, June 10, 9:09 AM RF Micro (RFMD) +3.9% thanks to an upgrade to Strong Buy from Charter Equity. Shares fell on Friday following reports of Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4 build order cuts. Davidson defended RF Micro and rivals Skyworks (SWKS) and Avago (AVGO), claiming checks indicate S4 demand "has been as expected with the exception of possible slowing orders in Europe," and that any demand shortfall could be shifted to other phones. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, June 7, 10:04 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) suppliers are lower following reports the company has cut Galaxy S4 orders due to soft European/Korean demand, and is trying to lower sales expectations. In addition to Qualcomm, Audience (ADNC -6.5%), Skyworks (SWKS -2.2%), TriQuint (TQNT -1.4%), Universal Display (PANL -1%), and Synaptics (SYNA -5.1%) are off. Assuming the reports are accurate, one unanswered question is how much of the shortfall is due to weak industry demand (Cowen just claimed European smartphone sales are improving), and how much is due to a mix shift to cheaper phones and/or an intensely competitive Android phone market. If it's mostly the latter, some suppliers could still fare well. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, May 31, 2:34 PM OmniVision's (OVTI +21.2%) post-earnings rally/short-squeeze continues, as investors on edge over Apple welcome an FQ4 beat and strong FQ1 guidance. On the earnings call, OmniVision mentioned orders from Chinese OEMs, whose sales are growing rapidly at home and overseas, is offsetting weakness elsewhere, and that product mix changes are lifting margins (Apple is known for driving a hard bargain). However, management also cautioned it doesn't expect as big of a late-year demand increase as it saw last year. The automotive market is touted as a growth driver, as is OmniVision's CameraCubeChip sensor/lens module for low-end phones. Skyworks (SWKS +2.3%), which shares many customers with OmniVision, could be up in sympathy. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, May 30, 7:02 PM Galaxy S4 sales will top 20M in Q2 and 80M by year's end, estimates RBC, citing checks indicating strong U.S. demand. If Samsung (SSNLF.PK) pulls that off, it would be on its way to hitting its target of 100M lifetime sales. RBC also expects industry smartphone sales to rise 27% this year to 870M, and 20% in 2014 to 1B+. Meanwhile, a Russian site reports Samsung's June 20 London event will reveal the Galaxy S4 Zoom, a 4.3" phone sporting a 16MP camera with a 10x optical zoom, and the Galaxy S4 Active, a water/dust-proof S4 variant sporting a Qualcomm (QCOM) Snapdragon 600 CPU. Samsung's just-launched S4 Mini uses a Snapdragon 400. Other S4 suppliers: PANL, SYNA, ATML, RFMD, BRCM, ANAD, SWKS, TQNT. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 30, 12:52 PM RF Micro (RFMD +3.9%) jumps following an upgrade to Buy from DA Davidson. Shares were already higher thanks to rival Avago's (AVGO +10.6%) FQ2 beat and upbeat commentary. On its earnings call, Avago mentioned orders for the Galaxy S4 and other 4G devices partly offset Apple-related weakness, and that it expects a "very strong ramp" in iPhone-related orders in FQ3. Avago claims the technical demands of 4G phones are lifting sales of chips using its FBAR filters, which offer performance advantages over traditional SAW filters. RBC recently estimated Avago had a ~70% share of the FBAR market. Rivals Skyworks (SWKS +3.7%) and Anadigics (ANAD +4.5%) are also up, as is Apple-dependent Cirrus Logic (CRUS +3.1%). Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Monday, April 29, 12:59 PM As goes Apple, so goes Cirrus Logic (CRUS +7.1%). The audio codec chipmaker is taking off in sympathy with the customer than made up 85% of its March quarter revenue, one trading day after getting clocked due to downbeat remarks about FY14 sales. Likewise, iPhone/Galaxy S4 supplier Skyworks (SWKS +3.4%) is rallying following a post-earnings Friday decline caused by mixed guidance, and so is rival RF Micro (RFMD +3.2%). Broadcom (BRCM +2.5%), meanwhile, is adding to last week's strong post-earnings gains, fueled by a Q1 beat and solid guidance. The gains come even as another Apple supplier, Nam Tai, gets crushed due to weak guidance. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Saturday, April 27, 11:03 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) managed to get 6 chips in the U.S. version of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4, per iFixit's teardown: the high-end APQ8064 app processor, a 4G baseband chip, an audio codec chip, an RF transceiver (beating out SIMO), and 2 power management ICs; the U.K. version uses a Snapdragon 600 baseband/app processor. Also found: a MXIM microcontroller, an SIMG video transmitter, a SWKS 2G power amplifier module, a BRCM NFC chip (likely to go with a combo chip), ATML and SYNA touch controllers, and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) NAND flash (previous). (Chinese S4 teardown) (Galaxy S III teardown) (also) 4 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 26, 12:43 PM In spite of an FQ2 beat, Skyworks (SWKS -3.6%) is selling off, as the Street looks unfavorably on guidance for FQ3 revenue of $435M and EPS of $0.53 (consensus is $443.2M and $0.52). Though EPS is expected to get a boost from a 130-180 bps Q/Q increase in gross margin, the revenue guidance might be a sign Samsung strength isn't enough to offset Apple weakness. On its earnings call, Skyworks claimed a "strategic transition from some lower margin components ... towards more margin-rich custom solutions" is responsible. Apple image sensor supplier OmniVision (OVTI -2.8%) is also off, possibly thanks to both Skyworks and Cirrus Logic. (TriQuint) (RF Micro) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 25, 5:49 PM Skyworks (SWKS): FQ2 EPS of $0.48 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $425.2M (+17% Y/Y) beats by $4.83M. Shares +1.6% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 25, 12:18 PM Low expectations are aiding iPhone supplier TriQuint (TQNT +10.7%), which is surging after missing Q1 estimates and guiding for Q2 revenue of $185M-$190M and EPS of -$0.10 to -$0.12, below a consensus of $194.8M and -$0.08. On its earnings call, TriQuint noted mobile sales (57% of total) fell 30% Q/Q thanks to "seasonally low demand from our largest customer" (almost certainly Apple), but added sales to all other top-5 mobile clients grew, and claimed strong demand for advanced 4G power amplifiers and filters. Possibly up in sympathy: SWKS +2.7%. RFMD +1.6%. CRUS +3%.10.1% of TriQuint's float was shorted as of March 28. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

- Wednesday, April 24, 5:35 PM Notable earnings after Thursday’s close: AEM, ALTR, AMCC, AMKR, AMZN, BIDU, BJRI, BLDR, BMRN, CALX, CAMP, CB, CBG, CENX, CERN, CINF, CLWR, CRUS, CSTR, CTCT, DECK, DLB, ELY, EMN, EXPE, FII, FR, FSL, GERN, IGT, IM, INAP, INFA, KBR, KEG, KLAC, LEG, MCRS, MXIM, N, NR, NTGR, OLN, PFG, PKI, PMCS, QLIK, RMD, RRC, RSG, SBUX, SIMO, SPN, SWKS, SYNA, TCO, THRX, TLAB, UHS, VPRT, VRSN, WRE, WYNN Comment! - Wednesday, April 24, 12:28 PM Are wireless chip stocks decoupling from Apple? Even with Apple off slightly as bleak June quarter guidance outweighs fresh capital returns, iPhone/iPad combo chip supplier Broadcom (BRCM +6.6%) is surging thanks to a Q1 beat and strong Q2 guidance, and is helping out some peers - QCOM +1.4%, SWKS +2.6%, INVN +1.8%, SNDK +1%. During its earnings call, Broadcom, which also provides combo chips for many Samsung phones, stated mobile chip sales only fell 1.6% Q/Q in seasonally weak Q1, and forecast sequential growth for the business (Apple-dependent Cirrus Logic sure isn't doing the same). Qualcomm reports after the close. 4 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 17, 9:11 AM Apple (AAPL) -1.2% after Cirrus Logic (CRUS), which gets over half of its revenue from the company, issues a revenue warning for the March and June quarters (FQ4 and FQ1). Though Cirrus' FQ4 revenue forecast of $206.9M is only a little below a $210.2M consensus, its FQ1 forecast of $150M-$170M is well below a $195.2M consensus. The audio codec chipmaker also says it will take a $23.3M write-down, $20.7M of which is due to "a decreased forecast for a high volume product" as a customer (quite possibly Apple) migrates to a new component (could be a sign of a new iPhone). SWKS -2.2%. QCOM -0.9%. 8 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
