- Thursday, June 13, 11:07 AM Shares of Safeway (SWY +9.3%) retreat from the lofty trading levels they saw following news of the sale of the company's Canadian operations. Analyst reaction: Citi downgraded SWY to Neutral today after sizing up the deal and seeing a lack of catalysts in the near term for the grocery store operator, while Credit Suisse calls the share price move to $30 too aggressive. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 13, 9:11 AM Premarket gainers: BLC +27%. GCI +27%. SWY +21%. SPRD +17%. MY +11%. PVH +9%. TVL +8%. Comment! [On the Move]
- Thursday, June 13, 8:43 AM More on May Retail Sales: As expected the late start to the spring season helped boost the building material & garden equipment category (HD, LOW, SHLD, WMT) as sales improved 0.9% M/M and 10.1% Y/Y. Grocery store sales (KR, SVU, SWY, WFM) were solid during the month, while department store sales (KSS, DDS, JCP, M, JWN) came in a touch light. Comment! [Consumer, U.S. Economy]

Wednesday, June 12, 5:30 PM
After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: SWY +30%. SPRD +25%. PVH +7%. PSMI +6%. SVU +6%.
After-hours top losers: SIGM -8%. QCOR -7%. SQNM -5%. ECYT -3%. VLCCF -3%. 3 Comments [On the Move] - Wednesday, June 12, 4:42 PM More on Safeway: The sale will net Safeway C$4B ($3.9B) in cash after taxes and expenses. $2B of the proceeds will be used to pay down debt, and most of the rest on buybacks. Canada Safeway had revenue of C$6.7B, operating profit of C$428M, and EBITDA of C$544M over the 12 months ending March 23. Safeway suggests "the higher multiples attributed to Canadian supermarket companies" contributed to its decision. The deal is expected to close in Q4, assuming regulatory approval. CC underway (webcast). SWY +32.2% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Consumer, M&A]
- Wednesday, June 12, 4:20 PM Safeway (SWY) +23.6% AH on news Empire Company's (EMP.A) Sobeys unit is buying Safeway's Canadian ops (Canada Safeway) for C$5.8B ($5.7B). 3 Comments [Consumer, On the Move, M&A, Top Stories, Breaking News]
- Thursday, June 6, 10:13 AM The headaches continue for the grocery store sector (SVU, KR, SWY, RNDY, HTSI) as Amazon and Wal-Mart (WMT +0.4%) circle around like hungry vultures. Though both companies are only in the early stages (AmazonFresh, Neighborhoods Market) of their grocery initiatives, analysts think their considerable distribution prowess makes them a long-term threat. Reuters' Jessica Wohl has the factoid of the day: "A Walmart grocery distribution center can house up to 4 million bananas at one time." 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 4, 2:38 PM Amazon (AMZN -1%) roundup: 1) Amazon is set to expand its AmazonFresh grocery delivery business, in trial mode in Seattle for 5 years, to Los Angeles "as early as this week" and San Francisco later this year, Reuters reports. An industry consultant claims Amazon, long expected to expand its grocery ops to areas where sales tax is no longer a concern, is targeting up to 40 markets. Grocery chains (SWY, KR, SVU, WFM, TFM) can't be thrilled, particularly given Amazon's pricing history. 2) eMarketer estimates Amazon generated $610M in ad sales last year, and will produce $835M this year. A targeted ad network could fuel additional growth for the business, increasingly seen as a threat to Google (GOOG). 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, May 30, 8:00 AM A new report from Rabobank concludes consumers are trading down when buying groceries or moving up to the premium sector as they slowly abandon the mid-market. It's a trend which could benefit both Wal-Mart (WMT) and Whole Foods Market (WFM) as they continue to chip away at sales at traditional grocery chains (KR, SWY, SVU, RNDY, HTSI) from different directions. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 21, 8:40 AM A trend to watch: The grocery market in the U.K. is becoming increasingly polarized as both high-end specialty grocers and discounters pick up market share while national grocery store chains suffer. Is the same pattern unfolding in the U.S.? The Q1 read is that Wal-Mart (WMT) continues to gobble up grocery market share at the expense of Kroger (KR), Supervalu (SVU) and Safeway (SWY) while natural/organic chains (WFM, TFM, NGVC) remain a growth story. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 16, 10:08 AM Grocery sales in focus: Retail analysts note something doesn't add up with Wal-Mart's (WMT -2.6%) claim per Nielsen data that it's "winning" market share for its grocery business despite the retailer's overall sales slip. On a rough comparison, the company's grocery store sales are growing level with Safeway (SWY +0.2%) - but still trail the pace of Whole Foods Market (WFM -0.1%) and Kroger (KR) by quite a lot. Is Wal-Mart's grocery share gain at the expense of the dollar store group (DG, DLTR, FDO)? 6 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 14, 5:09 PM Safeway (SWY) hikes its quarterly dividend by 14% to $0.20/share. That gives the grocery store chain a yield of 3.1%. Shares +1.2% AH. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Dividends]
- Monday, May 13, 9:11 AM More on retail sales: Building material and garden equipment sales (HD, LOW) were again, up 1.5% M/M and 4.1% Y/Y, while department store sales (SHLD, KSS, M, JWN, JCP) trailed expectations. Grocery store sales (KR, SVU, SWY) slipped during April compared to March but were 2% than a year ago on pricing gains. 1 Comment [U.S. Economy, Consumer]
- Thursday, May 2, 9:15 AM Blackhawk Networks (HAWK, SWY) is up 3.6% in premarket trading. The gift card company's relationship with Visa could be giving it a boost after Visa sailed past Q1 estimates. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, April 29, 5:36 PM Safeway (SWY) President Robert Edwards will become the company's CEO after chairman/CEO Steven Burd retires from both positions on May 14. Lead independent director T. Gary Rogers will become non-executive chairman, and Edwards will join the board. Burd, who has been CEO for 20 years, announced plans to retire in January. (PR) 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, April 26, 8:59 AM Online grocery sales increased 8% last year as the industry gains acceptance in metropolitan areas and is pegged to see sales grow to as much as $9.4B by 2017. The trend is far from favorable for brick-and-mortar grocery stores (KR, SVU, SWY) still reeling from increased competition from dollar stores and Wal-Mart. What to watch: As delivery services such as Peapod and Fresh Direct expand, will Whole Foods Market (WFM) stand pat? Comment! [Consumer]

Jim Van Meerten: no, as long as the momentum holds then so should you. If you lose 10% from your entry point, the stock drops below the 50 day moving average

Buffet_or_Broke: The entire industry seems to be very cyclical in nature, falling in and out of favor. As if eating is a fad. -
neobliviscar: Yes. Perfect for high-low mean reversion trading. While one may zig when it should zag, long & short portfolio of'em can be profitable.

I guess this is a reason why to sell Safeway (SWY) stock. National outrage surely will affect sales. http://yhoo.it/skdZng - View all 1 replies
