    Stryker (SYK) agrees to acquire privately-held Israeli firm Surpass Medical for $100M and up to an additional $35M in milestone payments. Surpass develops stent technology that uses a mesh design and delivery system to redirect blood flow away a brain aneurysm and allows a stable clot to form. (PR)

    Shares of Stryker (SYK) dip on reports that the FDA has received a report of a death stemming from its Neptune 2. The devices are used to collect fluid waste during surgery, and have already been linked to earlier fatalities.

    Stryker (SYK) taps Kevin Lobo as president and CEO and names him to the board. Coming out of Stryker's Orthopaedics group, Lobo joined Stryker last year after several years at Johnson & Johnson. Interim CEO Curt Hartman will leave the company after assisting in a search for a permanent CFO.

    The Supreme Court opinion on the Healthcare Act means that medical device makers still face a 2.3% tax on domestic sales starting next year unless they can persuade Congress to repeal it. Shares are sliding: MDT -1.2%, BSX -2.7%, STJ -1%, EW 1.1%, SYK -1.9%, ATRC -4.7%, CYBX -1.6%.

    Shares of orthopedics stocks rose today after privately held Biomet said FQ4 sales rose 3.4%. Industry sales have been weak as people delay hip and knee replacement surgeries in the weak economy. Biomet, which reports earlier than peers, is viewed as an indicator for the rest of the industry. The news boosted ZMH +4.2%, SYK +3.5%, WMGI +1.8%, JNJ +0.9%.

    More on Stryker (SYK): Q1 earnings came in largely in line with Street estimates on a slight Y/Y increase in revenue. Net earnings rose 14% as the medical-device maker saw sales of its hip and knee replacements increase, an encouraging sign that the orthopedic market may be picking up. Shares +1.4% AH.
