- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 5:50 PM RBC and MKM are upgrading Symantec (SYMC +13.6%) to Buy on account of the company's CEO switch, which accompanied its FQ1 report (I, II). "Symantec was in deep need of a change in leadership and strategy," writes MKM, which wasn't happy with poor organic growth in the midst of aggressive M&A activity (I, II). The firm thinks the future could hold fewer acquisitions, more stock buybacks, a dividend, asset sales, better cost controls, and perhaps even a sale of the company. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 9:43 AM More on Symantec's FQ1: The company expects FQ2 revenue of $1.635B-$1.665B and EPS of $0.35-$0.39, below a consensus of $1.69B and $0.40. FQ1 deferred revenue -4% Q/Q and +2% Y/Y to $3.745B. Consumer security software -1% (hurt by PC weakness), enterprise security +7%, server/storage management -2% (faces tough competition). $301M worth of shares repurchased. SYMC +14.3%, as shares benefit from a single-digit P/E and perhaps the company's CEO change. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

[On the Move] - Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 8:00 AM More on Symantec (SYMC +6.6%) FQ1: CEO Enrique Salem resigns effective immediately and is replaced by Chairman Steve Bennett. "While progress has been made over the last three years in many areas, it was the board's judgment that it was in the best interests of Symantec to make a change in the CEO," Bennett says. Comment! [Earnings, Top Stories]

- Sunday, July 15, 2012, 2:00 AM Symantec (SYMC), whose shares have lost around 25% since a profit warning three months ago, has suffered further problems after updates for its anti-virus software caused computers operating Windows XP to crash. The number of known affected clients is relatively small, although making matters worse are tales of terrible customer support. 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, May 14, 2012, 10:20 AM Symantec (SYMC -2.2%) heads lower on a downgrade to Sell from Goldman's Greg Dunham, who thinks declining margins and cash flow will drive shares lower. Dunham thinks "secular headwinds" in Symantec's core security and storage software businesses are limiting growth, and sees the company focusing more on lower-margin areas such as cloud software. He also sees competitive risks for Symantec's high-margin consumer security ops. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 5:09 PM More on Symantec's FQ4: Deferred revenue reached $3.97B +8% Q/Q. Consumer sales only rose 2% Y/Y, while the storage/server management software unit, which is facing touch competition from CVLT, EMC, and others, reported a 6% drop. Enterprise security software was relatively healthy, +8%. Symantec expects FQ1 revenue of $1.645B-$1.66B and EPS of $0.37-$0.38, largely below a consensus of $1.66B and $0.39. SYMC +1.6% AH. [On the Move] - Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 8:48 AM Symantec (SYMC) -7.3% premarket after issuing lower guidance for its FQ4, hurt by weaker than expected sales of new licenses. The storage and security software maker now expects EPS of ~$0.38 vs. its previous forecast of $0.41-$0.42; revenues are seen at ~$1.68B vs. its previous $1.72B-$1.73B. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 5:24 AM In the next two weeks, Symantec (SYMC) is expected to complete the dissolution of its JV with Huawei Technologies. Sources say Symantec was concerned its JV with the Chinese company would prevent it from gaining access to classified U.S. government information on cyberthreats. Comment! [Tech]
