- Friday, May 17, 11:27 AM Galaxy S4 sales will top 10M next week (less than a month after launching), says Samsung (SSNLF.PK) co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun. The Galaxy S III took 50 days to crack 10M. Samsung thinks S4 sales could eventually reach 100M, or twice the 50M the S III has seen over its lifetime. Suppliers with decent exposure: RFMD, ANAD, PANL, QCOM, BRCM, SYNA. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Saturday, April 27, 11:03 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) managed to get 6 chips in the U.S. version of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4, per iFixit's teardown: the high-end APQ8064 app processor, a 4G baseband chip, an audio codec chip, an RF transceiver (beating out SIMO), and 2 power management ICs; the U.K. version uses a Snapdragon 600 baseband/app processor. Also found: a MXIM microcontroller, an SIMG video transmitter, a SWKS 2G power amplifier module, a BRCM NFC chip (likely to go with a combo chip), ATML and SYNA touch controllers, and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) NAND flash (previous). (Chinese S4 teardown) (Galaxy S III teardown) (also) 4 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 26, 3:52 PM Atmel (ATML +5.1%) rallies strongly after touch controller rival Synaptics (SYNA +9%) delivers blowout FQ2 (March quarter) results thanks to a 57% Y/Y increase in mobile-related sales, and offers very strong FQ3 guidance. During its earnings call, Synaptics noted its controllers have been designed into the Samsung Galaxy S4, the HTC One, Sony's Xperia Z, and the BlackBerry Z10 - Atmel is also an S4 supplier. UniPixel (UNXL +2.9%) might also be up in sympathy - Synaptics named UniPixel as one of the metal mesh touch sensor firms it's working with. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]

[On the Move] - Thursday, April 25, 4:51 PM Tech guidance roundup: 1) Synaptics (SYNA - earnings) expects FQ3 revenue of $190M-$205M, way above a $158.2M consensus. Strong mobile sales +57% Y/Y in FQ2) responsible. 2) Qlik (QLIK - earnings) expects Q2 revenue of $104M-$108M and EPS of -$0.02 to $0.00 vs. a consensus of $104.8M and $0.02. But it also expects 2013 revenue of $471M-$481M and EPs of $0.41-$0.44, mostly above a consensus of $471.9M and $0.40. 3) Altera (ALTR - earnings) expects Q2 revenue to be flat to up 4% Q/Q, below a consensus for 9% growth. SYNA +19.4% AH. QLIK +11.1%. ALTR -1.9%.(Synaptics PR) (Qlik PR) (Altera PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

- Wednesday, April 24, 1:31 PM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV is a superb phone, if one can cope with a cheap plastic feel and too many gimmicks. That seems to be the consensus from the first full reviews. The Verge praises the S IV's display, camera, and performance, but still considers the HTC One a better bet. "The Galaxy S4 is fast and impressive, but it's also noisy and complex." TechCrunch and Gizmodo deliver similar takes. But others (I, II) make the case that more is ultimately better (this mindset has worked for Samsung thus far). The reviews arrive as Sprint and T-Mobile state their S IV launches will be delayed due to inventory issues. Key suppliers: QCOM, BRCM, SYNA, PANL, ATML, RFMD, TQNT. (previous) 23 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 24, 9:51 AM Maxim starts coverage on Synaptics (SYNA +2.4%) with a Buy an $45 PT a day before its FQ3 report arrives, and is helping shares rally above $40. Though one might expect Synaptics to be affected by Apple's FQ3 guidance, given it's believed to be an iPhone 5 touch controller supplier, the company is also a supplier to Samsung (replete with a Galaxy S IV design win) and many other smartphone OEMs. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 12:42 PM Cypress Semi (CY -9.3%) dives after guiding on its Q1 call for Q2 revenue of $176M-$178M and EPS of $0.06-$0.08, below a consensus of $182.9M and $0.09. Rival Synaptics (SYNA -1.9%) is off moderately. (Q1 beat) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, April 5, 3:58 PM A bullish Pac Crest note is helping Synaptics (SYNA +2.8%) finish higher in spite of a tech selloff. The firm sees rising demand for tablets and more expensive touchpads (such as the ones enabling Win. 8 multi-touch gestures?) offsetting weak notebook demand. Needham upgraded Synaptics last month, citing strong smartphone touch sensor momentum. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, April 3, 1:03 PM An upgrade to Buy from FBR fails to stop Atmel (ATML -3.6%) from selling off after the chipmaker announced the resignation of its CFO and favorably narrowed its Q1 guidance. Analyst Christopher Rollans thinks "the Street underestimates all or a portion" of several catalysts, including touch sensor hub opportunities, Galaxy S IV sales, a "cyclical recovery" in the microcontroller market, higher Windows 8 touchscreen attach rates, and growing XSense sensor demand (previous) in 2H. Rivals Synaptics (SYNA -4.7%) and Cypress (CY -1.8%) are also underperforming. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, March 18, 4:39 PM Synaptics' (SYNA +2.1%) Samsung Galaxy S IV design win could boost its 2012 revenue and EPS by $100M-$120M and $0.50-$1, thinks Needham, which has upgraded shares to Buy. The firm thinks Synaptics' Hover tech, which enables the S IV's touch-free gestures, allowed the company's touch controller to beat out that of sensor hub supplier Atmel (ATML). Needham adds Synaptics has "gained significant share" with Nokia, BlackBerry, HTC, LG, and Sony, while maintaining a dominant position with Huawei and ZTE. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, March 15, 1:38 PM A Chinese site has already torn down a local version of Samsung's Galaxy S IV. Discovered parts include a Qualcomm (QCOM) 3G baseband chip, an Intel (INTC) baseband chip and RF transceiver, TriQuint (TQNT) and Skyworks (SWKS) power amplifiers, Synaptics (SYNA) and Atmel (ATML) controllers, and a Broadcom (BRCM) GPS receiver. A Qualcomm baseband/app processor is expected in the U.S. version. RBC thinks thinks 70M S IV units could be sold this year, and sees Broadcom (NFC chip and a combo chip with high-speed Wi-Fi to go with the GPS chip) and Maxim (MXIM - power management and infrared chips) benefiting. 4 Comments [Tech]
