Company Description
Syngenta AG, a Swiss Aktiengesellschaft, was formed on November 12, 1999 under the laws of Switzerland. In November 2000, Syngenta’s business operations were created by Novartis AG (“Novartis”) and AstraZeneca PLC (“AstraZeneca”) through an agreement to spin off and merge the Novartis... More

- Monday, April 22, 12:02 PM Jefferies raises its price target on Syngenta (SYT -0.8%) to $86 from $79 citing a "rolling forward" of the investment bank's models. "We are maintaing our FY13 and FY14 estimates," says analyst Laurence Alexander. Meanwhile, the company remains embroiled in controversy surrounding neonicotinoid pesticides' effects on bee health (I, II). Earlier this month, Corporate Europe Observatory published letters the company sent to members of the European Commission lobbying against a proposed ban of the products. Comment!
- Thursday, April 18, 10:08 AM Syngenta (SYT +2.9%) moves up nicely after its Q1 sales/trading call. Highlights from the transcript : sales up 8% at constant exchange rates, prices rose on crop protection and seeds, double-digit growth in Latin America/Eastern European/SE Asia, word search turns up only one mention of CRUISER, the hot-button neonicotinoid pesticide (I, II). Comment! [On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 3:10 AM Syngenta (SYT): Q1 sales +6% to $4.6B vs consensus of $4.56B. Growth was strong in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, as well as in South East Europe and in France, supported by new fungicide launches. However, business in Italy and some northern European countries was weaker, due to to cold wet weather. Aims to boost sales from eight key crops to $25B by 2020. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Commodities]
- Wednesday, April 17, 8:32 AM Syngenta (SYT) feels the heat as the U.K.'s third largest grocery chain says it is "monitoring the situation very closely" to determine whether bee deaths are cause for banning neonicotinoid pesticides from its supply chain. Two competitors have already eliminated their usage of the chemicals and grocery giant Tesco says it will follow the government's advice on the issue, not exactly a comforting stance for SYT considering the regulatory scrutiny the issue has received (I, II). On the bright (and sell) side, Nomura upgrades the shares to Buy from Hold. Shares -1.2% premarket. Comment!
- Monday, March 25, 3:02 PM A problem may be buzzing for Syngenta (SYT +0.2%) as angry beekeepers join forces with environmental groups to file a lawsuit against the EPA for approving pesticides which are purportedly harmful to honey bees. Syngenta produces clothianidin and thiamethoxam, two neonicotinoid pesticides allegedly responsible for the "devastating ongoing mortality of bees known as colony collapse disorder," according to the coalition of concerned parties. Earlier this month, the UK and Germany spoiled a European commission proposal to ban the pesticides. Syngenta's COO called the plan "a shameful political proposal [that] will do nothing to improve bee health." Comment! [Commodities]
- Wednesday, February 6, 3:06 AM Syngenta (SYT): FY net income +17% to $1.87B vs consensus of $1.87B; adjusted EPS +15% to $22.30; EBITDA +8% to $3.15B; revenues +7% to $14.2B vs forecasts of $14.3B. Q4 sales +12% to $3.24B. Declares dividend of 9.50 Swiss francs per share. Chairman Martin Taylor and three directors to retire at upcoming AGM, board to propose two new directors. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Commodities, Dividends]
- Tuesday, January 29, 4:56 PM Syngenta (SYT) says there are no grounds for restricting use of its Cruiser insecticide - whose sales exceeded $1B in 2011, or 7.5% of SYT's revenue - after the European Commissioner for Health called for laws controlling the product and sprays from Bayer (BAYRY.PK). SYT says constraints on Cruiser would cause significant loss to farmers and the economy. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 3:45 AM Syngenta (SYT): Q3 sales +1% to $2.7B vs consensus of $2.8B, +6% on a constant currency basis. Breakdown: crop protection +3% to $2.13B, seeds +2% to $442M. Latin America +18%, boosted by a strong start to the season as high soybean prices lead to expansion of acreage. N America -5%, Asia Pacific +3%, EMEA -10%. Reiterates FY forecast of increase in EBITDA margin and strong EPS growth. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 5:01 AM Agrochemicals company Syngenta (SYT) names ABB (ABB) CFO Michel Demare as chairman to replace the retiring Martin Taylor. Demare, who joined Syngenta's board earlier this year, will take up his new position in April but will leave ABB to concentrate on his board mandates, which also include UBS. (PR) Comment!
- Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 8:59 AM Syngenta (SYT) agrees to pay DuPont (DD) $125M to buy the latter's professional products insecticide business, which includes the Advion and Acelepryn brands, and other intellectual property. Syngenta says the deal will help it increase its profitability in the lawn and garden markets. (PR) Comment! [M&A]
- Thursday, July 26, 2012, 11:26 AM Syngenta (SYT +4.8%) reports H1 net income of $1.5B on revenues of $8.27B (+7% Y/Y), beating analyst estimates of $1.46B earnings on revenues of $8.19B, and sees a positive outlook for Latin America as soybean prices rise to a record. “Brazilian farmers have a great deal of incentive to have a very big crop, so we are looking forward to a big second half," CEO Mike Mack says. Comment! [Commodities, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, July 3, 2012, 11:47 AM The EPA grants registration approval for Syngenta's (SYT +2.6%) two refuge-in-a-bag corn seed products, making them available for the 2013 planting season. "The launch of a refuge-in-a-bag offer further enhances our leading corn insect control portfolio, which includes seed treatments and insecticides as well as traits," SYT says. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Friday, June 22, 2012, 12:46 PM As demand for commodities sinks, the global farm sector presents an investment opportunity, Jefferies says. Initial USDA yield estimates probably are overstated given warmer weather and deteriorating crop conditions, the firm says, and crop prices likely will remain above long-term averages and well above cash breakeven. Favorite stocks: AGCO, SYT, GPRE. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, May 25, 2012, 3:22 AM Syngenta (SYT) and several community water systems agree to settle U.S. litigation related to the herbicide atrazine in order to end the business uncertainty and expense of a long legal battle. The settlement will cost Syngenta $105M. The charge is partly covered by provisions and the impact on earnings will be ~$0.5/share. Comment!

Michael Bryant: All except $BEAV seems good to own and hold, but $JBHT is the only one with a history of uptrend of more than five years.

Please continue to liquidate. Id like to start a few new positions; DIS, SYT, HAIN, etc. No chance at HAIN today though. - View all 0 replies
